    Thanks Keith, you've just made my attempt at laying out the rings for a segment bowl, so easy to understand. I greatly appreciate all of the work you do, to post these videos. You make things so much easier to understand, then most other's do. You go straight at it, with no bs or amount of blowing your own horn. And that, truly makes your videos, much more enjoyable and a lot easier to learn from. All the best, to you and the lovely Miss Sheila.

    Kieth, I'm new to segmented turning. I've wrestled with the on line calculators, my bowls always ended up small. Thanks! to this video I drew up a segmented diagram per your suggestion and I have a much better understanding / confidence, of the geometry. Thanks! again. PS: I enjoy all your videos and consider them tutorials. Cheers!

    Hello Keith. Nice video, I must try a segmented bowl. One little tip for you take it or leave it. When you use your drill driver to tighten the band (hose clamp) try using just the extension with out the flat blade screw driver bit. The extension should be 1/4 of an inch to except 1/4 inch bits. Most band clamps are 1/4 of an inch, not all but most that are made here in the US. I have even used a 1/4 inch socket from a drive set. Of course if they are metric I am sure that is no challenge to you. I find you don't slip off the brand screw as with the flat blade bit. Hope that make sense and you find it helpful. Keep up the great videos they are very helpful. Thanks Ed.

    • @KeithBarrowat54a
      @KeithBarrowat54a  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ed, I did actually try that,but the clips are that old and chewed up it wouldn't go on! Going to get some new ones tomorrow,and will use the socket!

    Thank you, that made it easy to wrap my head around segments. Im in a bigtime natural bowl phase, but im toying with the idea of trying segments. I have ALOT of suitable size material to make segments from, that is piling up.

    Good video Keith. It's probably important to mention that a 30 degree segment has 2 x 15 degree cuts. With the Seggy's, it's all done for you of course but if you cut at 30 degrees on one side, you will not get a circle :). So for 10 segments, the cut angle would be 360/20 = 18 degrees. So each segment would have 2 cuts of 18 degrees from the centre line. I hope I managed to explain that properly :)

    • @KeithBarrowat54a
      @KeithBarrowat54a  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes,but I think everybody understood what I was trying to explain,according to the comments I've had. I didn't say cut at 30 degrees,I said mark out at 30 degrees.Sorry I didn't get it perfect (sarcasm!) 😀

  • @gilgrace1915

    Very well done Keith. Great tip on measuring across a tangent instead of the corners of the segment to achieve the desired diameter. One more problem I've had is how to calculate the diameter of the next ring. On one hand you need an ample glue surface between the two rings, and on the other hand you don't want to waste away too much of that beautiful wood. Do you have a simple formula for determining the diameter of each successive ring?

    • @KeithBarrowat54a
      @KeithBarrowat54a  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gil, I usually go down(or up) 1inch,so the step is only half an inch.This seems to give me a good glue up surface,and still relatively easy to turn.The important thing is not to make the segment too narrow from inner to outer.About one and a quarter inches works for me.😀

    Hi Keith, could I (respectfully) suggest that you use an 8mm socket to tighten the jubilee clips, they don't jump out like a screwdriver bit so you have more control while tightening :)

      @richardadams4407 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello again Keith.
      That's great many thanks.
      The Lumberjack looks pretty identical to the Titan table saw that you can buy from Screwfix.
      I have the titan planer/thicknesser and really like it.
      I think I've seen a titan table saw in your earlier vids if I'm not mistaken. If so would you recommend one?
      Many thanks again.
      Richard :-)

    • @KeithBarrowat54a
      @KeithBarrowat54a  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Richard Adams Hi Richard,I also have the Titan planer/thicknesser,great piece of kit.I used to have a Titan table saw,but I didn’t like the bolt on extensions,so I went for the Lumberjack one which has sliding extensions,which enables me to store it under my workbench when not in use,and a bigger blade.Let me know what you decide on! 😀
