He wrote this when he was 14! Truly gifted.
Actually he wrote this work when he was 25 for piano and winds and made this arrangement of it when he was thirty. But he did indeed write a piece in the same key for the same combination of instruments when he was 14, and it’s also very impressive, passionate and beautiful, though, as one might expect, it’s considerably more derivative (particularly of Mozart’s style) and doesn’t yet have the distinct compositional voice you hear in this work. Charming performance.
What a different feel this arrangement (it's really more than a mere transcription) has compared to Beethoven's quintet for piano and winds. The piano quartet is more gemütlichkeit, more romantic. I love them both. This seems to me to be a superlative performance.
Gregory Weis I also prefer the quartet version, but the wind quintet is also nice, but in some ways is more "classicising" and Mozartean than this version which seems more lyrical and relaxed.
This is top shelf Beethoven even if it's not among his more widely performed works.
Thankyou to spring duo for this bit of 'joy of life'. The quartet play as if they were 14-year-old geniuses, as Beethoven was when he composed this. What a treat.

The only REAL expression came from viola player!
