Reaction of Magnesium with Oxygen ... Mg + O2 =

Magnesium will react with oxygen to become magnesium oxide
Mg + O2 = MgO(s)
balanced, this is 2 Mg + O2 = 2 MgO
If there is water around, the MgO will react with that to become Mg(OH)2.
