- With Bruce Willis’ recent, tragic frontotemporal dementia diagnosis revealed, we here at JoBlo thought the time was right to celebrate the show that made him a star, Moonlighting, in which he co-starred with Cybill Shepherd. At the time, Willis was a complete unknown, with only a one-episode guest starring role as a bad guy on Miami Vice to show for his early years in Hollywood. All that changed when the creators of Moonlighting were looking for a fresh face to play a wisecracking private eye named David Addison. On the show, he would be paired with Cybill Shepherd, who was then already a pretty big star thanks to a run of movies in the seventies that included The Last Picture Show and Taxi Driver. In this, she would play a former model who, after having her fortune embezzled, discovers she owns a low-rent detective agency run by Willis’ Addison.
There are a lot of reasons Moonlighting took off in the eighties, but the primary one was the “will they or won’t they” sexual tension between the two leads. While they notoriously feuded off-camera, on the small screen, they were electric. Willis’ affable, wise-guy personality also made him a sex symbol, the guy all women wanted to be with and all guys wanted to be. It would lead to him being cast in the film that made him a superstar, Die Hard, and looking back at Moonlighting, and it’s amazing to see how fully formed he was when the show began.
In this episode of Gone But Not Forgotten, which is written by Jessica Dwyer, edited by Cesar Gabriel, narrated by Travis Hopson and produced by Dave Arroyo, we dig into Moonlighting’s best moments (such as the famous “Atomic Shakespeare” episode) and reveal why it’s so hard to find on streaming services.

They nailed this show, it was such a nice break form the typical detective/cop show. I was hooked on the first episode. It had everything you wanted in a show you could watch every week and be surprised by it. Bruce Willis & Cybill Shepard had a chemistry that could not be duplicated much like David Duchovny & Gillian Anderson. They just clicked in all the right ways even when it was wrong. Loved the show and wish all the best to Bruce Willis & his family, such a iconic actor of my time.
Watched Moonlighting fanatically as a kid, had such a massive crush on Cybill Shepard and loved the way the stories and randomness came through on every episode.

I was in my 20's with a wife but, I too had a big crush on Cybill Shepard (smile...smile).
I didn’t care for her, or him, and never watched the show.
It was too good to last. Too good, too expensive, too creative, too much. One of the best series ever on TV. It's a miracle it lasted 4 1/2 years.
I feel the reason the series didn't last is because it was kind of all over the place especially for the main 2 characters during the last 2 seasons 🤔
Allyse Beasley's role on Cheers as Coach's daughter was one of the most heartfelt ep's of that whole series. She settles for a guy that abuses her, and Coach, being blinded by his daughter's inner-beauty, just can't understand why she would stay with him when she could have anyone she wanted. His admission to her at the end that she looks just like her (deceased) mother/his wife, and how she changes what she was going to say about how neither of them were very "pretty" in the physical sense as a result, was a real tear-jerker. It's a shame that ep didn't earn the show a Grammy for the writing staff.

the 80's were an amazing time...I'm so fortunate to have grown up during that time.
I lost my mum in 93 when I was 13. I have lovely memories of watching Moonlighting with her. Our other favorites were The Golden Girls and reruns of Different Strokes.
Hope Bruce is getting the best help he can. So sad to hear he has dementia...he's just a year older than my dad...and both are relatively young
Right?! Ditto, dude/dudette. Unfortunately, there's been reports of elder abuse regarding how his family chose to "help" Bruce after his diagnosis. Obviously, we don't know shit but, considering how completely oblivious he appears in his most recent films and the fact that they sold his virtual likeness too,....it just seems to be, "put him in as many movies as is possible before his illness stops the production of income"

Don't know if he's young enough that it's considered early onset dementia (which both my mother and grandmother had). But any kind of dementia honestly simply sucks. No matter if you are the "right" kind of age for it or not.

Cybill was seemingly perfect and this was Bruce's best role IMO. I used to have a Moonlighting soundtrack cassette
The Shakespeare Episode was shown in my college English lit class. Shakespeare scholars loved it and felt that episode was something the author would have loved.
Finally. One of the best shows of all time. Broke so much ground.
Moonlighting is streaming on Hulu in stunning HD with its original aspect ratio. It's a breath of fresh air to rewatch these episodes on a big screen TV! Seasons one and two are where the real magic are! The show has charisma! The chemistry between Maddie and David is electric! I was a fan of the show when it first aired back in 1985. I was 13 years old then. I'm still a fan now and getting to watch it in its glorious high definition streaming format is like seeing it for the first time all over again. ❤
Oh maaan!! One of my all time favorite TV shows. I still blast that theme song in my home every so often. I feel blessed to have been an 80's kid. If this series ever comes out as a BluRay release I will buy it. Cheers to all of you Moonlightning fans out there! ❤

I was 13 when Moonlighting first hit and I wanted to be David Addison so bad!.He was the coolest guy on tv. Undisputed!
I watched Moonlighting every week with my mom, I had such a crush on Bruce Willis and thought Cybill Shepherd was so stunningly beautiful 😍 They were perfectly cast and had SUCH FIRE HOT chemistry !!! It was SO AWESOME growing up in the 80's ....
One of my favorite shows of all time. I snagged the first three seasons (the good ones) on DVD when they were available, and I treasure them. Not all the elements of the show have aged well, but the David/Maddie banter is timeless.
Yes, a distinct difference after the 3rd. After the characters slept together, then Maddie started sleeping around a lot, and I just didn't think that true to the character. And, if I remember right, the episodes focused on Maddie OR David or Miss Depesto. Just not the Maddie AND David of earlier episodes. In a side note, do the math and look at how many women in 30's or 40's now are named Maddie!

Such a fantastic tv show! Because it was so ahead of its time the show still holds up today! The Taming of the Shrew is my all time favorite episode. I was literally that kid wanting to watch the show but Mom made me do my homework!

Season 1 to 3 will always be the best! Bruce deserved his Emmy. It saddens me Bruce may never play that type of energetic loveable character or any character ever again. 😥😢

This is going to make me go rewatch the series again. I LOVED this when I was a kid. Such a weird, funny and daring show. I can't think of another show that pushed the boundaries this far and succeeded this much.

The episode where Cybil Shepherd sang “Blue Moon” is etched in my memory. She was flawless.

This is the best acting job of Bruce Willis, he portayed every emotion. Top 5 series when i was a kid, i didn't miss an episode.

Moonlighting was my first introduction to Bruce Willis and I loved the show. As I followed his career, I kinda hoped he'd play characters similar to David: happy go lucky, fun-loving, affable, a little wild...but he never quite did. But I remained a fan of his over the years.
@@zukini8763Bruce was also great in the movies "Blind Date" with Kim Basinger and John Larroquette, and "Death Becomes Her" with Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep. Check them out if you've never seen them.

Ah, Moonlighting. One of my buddies back in high school turned me on to this show back in 1985 and I never missed an episode. I think I need to find this show online and start re-watching.
Some of their quick fire exchanges are some of greatest scenes of all time. So much intensity and word heavy. It had passion and comedic elements. It was thrilling to see them and of course the chemistry.
I absolutely loved Moonlighting when I was a little kid! It was one of my favourite programmes along with the A-Team!!
I was a junior in HS when the Taming of the Shrew episode aired. We were studying Shakespeare and the final line of "We hate iambic pentameter." was woven throughout the lessons. Such a fantastic show.
We loved Moonlighting as a family when I was a kid. There was SO much lost protentional wasted though. Such a bummer.

This is one of my all-time favorites, thank you so much for doing this more people need to see this show, in its day it was huge, and the style of banter was out of old school Hollywood.
I loved the series. Watched it in the 80s on Dutch television. Last week I watched the pilot DVD from Moonlightning and now see this JoBlo special. Great.
What can, I say...back in the day this TV show truly had it all. Cybill Shepard was a "dream come true to life on the TV screen" she had a lovey face, great shape, excellent brains, and glamour office dresses, skirt suits, evening glowns, plus she always wore nylons and heels. Bruce Willis and her were, just the perfect opposite couple in both comedy and romance (smile...smile).

I loved this show as a kid and it constantly surprises me that nobody seems to talk about it these days. Thanks for making this video to put that right.
One of the groundbreaking shows of the 1980's breaking ground with 4th wall breaks. It was the show that led Willis getting Die Hard.
But he was launched in 1985 not 1988 of his breakthrough
That episode "A Womb with a View" Is the only one I've ever seen, over and over again. Its the only one my Mom had recorded, so "Baby Love" and "What a Wonderful World" are tattooed into my Memory. Those songs and that episode are a core memory for me.
I remember watching this with my dad growing up, we both loved it.
Moonlighting is so underrated .They had perfect mix between crime and comedy and there is where few shows who like Moonlighting , i still wish that Moonlighting had more episodes.
I watched it over my parents shoulders...and remembered the name from my childhood.. it was on a re run bout 5 years ago and holy shit was it good!!! Loved wvery minute!
I think that both Lois and Clark: The new Adventures of Superman and Castle had some of the same producers as Moonlighting, and you can tell. I loved both shows because they reminded me so much of Moonlighting. If was an awesome show to grow up watching.
We really need to get a beautiful, full, unaltered release on streaming and bluray. The show deserves it, Bruce deserves it and we deserve it. (note the music altered in 'the man in the iron mask' was a mistake, they accidently pulled an earlier print of the episode that used a different musical piece)
Loved this show when it was on the air. I heard the scripts were 2-3 times longer than most other shows, due to all of the dialogue (including the standard "talking over each other" scenes). The series finale aired at the same time NBC was airing the Family Ties finale, so I had to record one and watch the other.
That's the one thing I don't miss about the VCR era I grew up in: having to pick which show to watch and which one to tape for later.
But the series finale didn't live up and it could have aired for 2 more seasons
Willis was gorgeous and funny, Shepherd was gorgeous and her suits were all the rage among young working women, and their talents and chemistry were undeniable and perfect. It was a fun show.
Loved this show...And that theme song. Their take on Taming of the Shrew was always my favourite and got me interested in Shakespeare. So sorry to hear about Bruce.
I remember Moonlighting, but can’t really remember much about it except for who was in it, until I this video and it just all started to come back, I was only a child in the 80’s and this show really had my attention.
I also watched Moonlight when I was a kid on public TV here in Spain. I don't really remember any episodes, but what I do remember is the fun of watching the week's episode every Sunday.

This was one of my favorite shows growing up. The combo of David and Maddie were a perfect mismatch. The theme song is still magical.
Ah, yes, the original "Will They/Won't They" saga. I loved the show, though it was likely more infamous for Bruce and Cybil's offscreen mutual dislike for each other, despite playing onscreen love interests.

A brilliant series! The show had so much character, creativity and originality. It's a show that draws you in, makes you forget about your worries and transports you to another world. I always felt better after watching this show :)

It was a great show. I looked forward to the entertainment every week. I was in high-school then. I am 52 now.
It occurred to me that someone may be reading my comment 37 years from now. How nice to know that my comment may still be on TH-cam when I probably will not be. I wonder if I'll make it to 89.
But I have lived a good life thus far . When doing things, "with all your heart" I once learned . The producers of the show made moonlighting with all their heart.

Here in the UK BBC Two used to show Red Dwarf followed by Moonlighting every Monday night during the 80s. Just honest, simple good times!

I think on this show now and then. My parents loved the shit out of it and being a kid of the 80s you watched what they did. Especially when you only had one TV. Scored a small black and white later and we moved up to multiple sets past the late 80s. Man weird looking back.
Hoping for the best for Bruce. There will never be another series like Moonlighting a diamond in the rough that will always live in reruns on you tube. Love this series.

I liked watching this show when I was a kid, but until watching this video, I couldn't remember why. The reason I couldn't remember is because I couldn't remember the show too well. Most of my remaining memories really just remembered a romantic comedy, I had forgotten how weird it got. This video did throw those memories back into place.
-Oh, however I did also remember all of the door slamming's as Donatello references in his observation of the fight between April O'Neil and Casey Jones.
I was never a fan of this show but am definitely going to miss Bruce Willis's presence.

We were already in a golden age of TV, and we were importing gems like Moonlighting from USA.
It was amazing! We only had four TV channels, but that’s all we needed when the content was so good.
I was unfortunately just too young to remember this show, (I was 4 yrs old when it ended) but I'm glad you brought it to my attention! They just don't make 'em like this anymore... Thanks! =) (but I'm afraid the syntax is actually "had STOLEN".) Keep 'em coming! =)

Still watch _Moonlighting_ occasionally. A unique, special series - it holds up. Watched "Atomic Shakespeare" on endless repeat as a kid.

Sadly, Bruce Willis has more than aphasia and it was recently released that he is now suffering from dementia. Truly a sad end to a wonderful career.
Aphasia is often just an early symptom of dementia.
Those first three seasons were incredible. Amazing television.

Man i loved that show. I was the only one among my friends but who cares. A remake? Please NO! A re-release? Hell yeah! Compared to todays mostly bland and generic stuff, this show was so innovative and fun. And yeah, i cried after the last episode aired😢

I loved this show. I was 14. It was magic.
I did purchase the series on dvd. I have to go back and see if the music is different. I watched the show in its initial run (I was in my late teens at the time). Loved it so much. I had been a Cybill fan and grew to love Bruce Willis. Then I saw Blind Date and Diehard and that sealed it!
You're a lucky person. The DVD's didn't sell for very long, and currently there's no place to stream this show. I bought them as well back when they came out and am glad I did. If they do end up getting a home, there is the possibility the music will be changed because the company won't want to pay the fee for whatever music was being used.

Wonderful review. However, you didn't mention perhaps the greatest part of the show, never seen before. *Banter* The endless bantering (AKA, dialog), absolutely brilliant, and unfortunately never done again.
