    That Nylander contract looks better and better every year.

  • @jimmyzeke13
    @jimmyzeke13 6 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    The Nylander deal is fine. People think he's overpaid because he makes more than players like Gaudreau and Pastrnak, but the reality is that those players are severely underpaid compared to their market value. The real mistake would have been letting him sit in Sweden for the season on the last year of Matthews and Marner's entry-level deals. If anything is going to hamper the Leafs' cap situation, it's contracts like Zaitsev's and Marleau's (but at least his is moveable).

    • @hillsidebliss
      @hillsidebliss 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Completely agreed but Zaitsev’s contract isnt that bad. Hes being turned into a reliable stay at home defensemen.

    • @kilocide9477
      @kilocide9477 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It inflates marners contract next year. He is getting 7.45 on a deal that gets one Ufa year. If he had arbitration rights he would have got 6.5 like his comparables. They overpaid by a million a year. If you think it's worth it..... fine, but it's too much for a 20 goal scorer with no edge who sucked balls in the playoffs last year.

    • @jimmyzeke13
      @jimmyzeke13 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not sure where you're getting those numbers but according to Capfriendly Nylander has a cap hit of just under $7 million (starting next season). And I doubt an arbitrator would lower his salary considering what players like Ryan Johansen and Evander Kane have gotten recently with similar production, especially when you consider the rising cap. And I wouldn't put too much stock into a single playoff performance, particularly when Matthews himself only posted two points in their seven game series.

    • @kilocide9477
      @kilocide9477 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jimmyzeke13 agents don't use the cap numbers. They use rate of pay. Nylander has a rate of pay of 7.45 million a year on a 6 year deal. That he technically gets less based on the cap rules and the fact he missed games so far this season doesn't impact his rate of pay which is...... 7.45 million a year on a 6 year deal.
      I did basic division to come up with these numbers.

    • @jimmyzeke13
      @jimmyzeke13 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then it should be 7.5 since his total salary is $45 million. Either way, his actual salary is irrelevant when talking about the cap hit, which is what Burke's complaint stems from.

    Burkies best points here were:
    1) You can't put that much blame on Nylander for last years playoff.. He was 21 years old. He is too young to ridicule him that much
    2) Its a good thing I got out when I did.
    New school hockey people. Data driven, logical not emotional. Speed and skill wins. The Leafs are going to keep Nylander and we are going to have a very talented group grow and mature with each other.

    All this hate for Burke bc of his time with the Leafs but he’s absolutely right. You can win games in the regular season with a weakness, but come playoff time it’s different. It’s a 7 game series with the opposing coaching staff strategizing against you. Just like Boston did last year against Toronto.

    The 2011 canucks? U kidding me. That team had Alberts, Rome, Bieksa, Torres, Lappierre. Edler is huge & was at this peak as far as playing physical. Kesler/Burr. Higgins could play the physical game and the Twins entire game is played downlow. They outhit Boston in some of those tight home games. They were injured at the end more so than soft. Not a comparable for this leafs group.

      Don't forget Colin Campbell was harassing referees in that series. The emails came out because of the concussions lawsuit. He was emailing officials about calling penalties against his son (Gregory). It's true, it's documented and you can find it if you google it. I recall that series and Boston and Chara seemed to get away with everything. Why? I vividly recall a game in Boston where Chara threw one of the Sedins to the ice and they both got 2 minutes. If you go back and watch that series there is distinct favoritism towards Boston. Don't get me wrong, Tim Thomas was unbelievable but if you stop calling penalties that gave the Bruins an advantage. Also Burke is past his best before date, he's a lost dinosaur. And debating on his comments is like pissing in the wind (should be avoided by intelligent people).

    Pittsburgh was amazing because of their relentless forecheck.
    Vegas was amazing because of their unreal puck retrieval (and fleury).
    However I do agree with Burke, playoff hockey is different - still a bit old school. The whistle goes away. We’ll see if they can overcome that. The Leafs remind me a bit of Chicago minus obviously the defence the Hawks had.
    Question is can they pour on the pressure relentlessly the way past winners of the Stanley Cup have. Just look at all the cup winners since the last lockout - just non-stop overwhelming pressure. That’s what wins I feel.

    the obvious answer is that Nylander now becomes a trade chip. There might be some limits on when he can trade him, but it's important to keep the asset and keep him playing. If Nylander is the real deal this season, a team with a major D to trade might still accept Nylander's overpay. It's more important to get the players you need than nickel and dime every deal out of principle.

  • @buggy1667
    @buggy1667 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree on the need for both a solid and mobile #3 Dman, as well as a grinding power forward on the 3rd and/or 4th lines. Toronto is a mix of players who generally play a skilled/soft game. Whos the meanest guy on the team in terms of play style? Kadri? Thats a problem. Playoff hockey is dirty hockey, rarely a penalty awarded.

    Plenty of people don't take well to Brian's professional persona. Fine. I get it. He's highly opinionated, cantankerous at times. When our kids played soccer together when they were little ones, he learned that my son lived and died with the Canucks. He also learned that as a single dad I could only afford to take him to a handful of games per year. Out of the blue one day there was an envelope in the mail, containing a pair of red-section tickets to six Canuck home games. I have a hard time criticizing Brian.

  • @conorthompson89
    @conorthompson89 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah the Leafs D may not be great at the moment, but look at who we have in the pipeline. Dermott is progressing well, he could become a decent 2nd pairing guy, Liljegren is a great prospect that could also turn into a top 4 D with potential at top 2, and Sandin is a little too early to judge but Toronto's treating him like he could become a top 4 D too. So why overpay on a top 4 D right now when we're not going to need one in a couple of years? I'd rather have Nylander since you know trading him for a top 4 D would be useless in a couple of years.
    And who needs big physical players on your team when the opposing team can't even hit you since you're too fast. Someone track how many hits Kapanen takes in a season and compare it to someone like Crosby or Kucherov.

  • @lenkennedy9214

    Pretty sure the Leafs are something like 3rd in the NHL in goals against. So I don't really understand how defense is their weakness this season. I'm not even saying they're a contender but their defense has been just fine this season thus far. How are we gonna beat Washington? Pretty sure they gave The Capitals a run for their money a couple years ago when they faced in the playoffs and 5 out of 6 games went to overtime. Most of the Leafs core were rookies at that point and they've added Tavares now. I'm not afraid of meeting washington in the playoffs at all. Bring it on!

  • @Kman31ca

    Ah, i don't know if I agree with him. TO is a damn good team, and at least should have a good run in the playoffs. But I do agree having depth on D is important in the playoffs. D-men seem to start dropping like flies the deeper you get into the playoffs. Not always, but Trading Nylander in the off season for at least a good 2-3 defensively minded D-man could be just what TO needs. Guess you see how they do this year, and then reevaluate.

    Burke should go tell Jim Rutherford how important defense is to winning cups. Plus, if he'd bother to look at a stat sheet he'd see that T.O is top-6 in GA at the moment, I guess that's not good enough? Also, the Leafs really aren't that small, not sure what he's going on about there. Pittsburgh was probably smaller when they won back to back cups, Chicago wasn't exactly huge.. Sure, LA, Washington and Boston were big teams, but 6 cups to 4 in the past decade says there's more than one way to win a cup.
    The only thing I agree with him on is that Toronto might not be the top contender, but to say they flat-out aren't a contender is just Burke showing his bitterness. If it wasn't for Nashville and Tampa being totally stacked, Toronto would easily be the favorite in just about any objective viewer's book. I guess he just can't wrap his head around another GMs vision of a good team. This is why Toronto fired him, and eventually hired a young guy to build a real contender.
    - A habs fan (It's not just Leafs fans, Burke's an old, dumb, dinosaur by most people's standards).

    With the cap going up over the term, Nylander's deal looks decent. When two parties take negotiations to the deadline, you end up with fair market value-- and that is not a tautological argument, even if it looks like it on the surface. Deadline bargaining is the best way to determine value. Sorry if some don't have the stomach for it. Now, it is contingent on Nylander becoming the player he projects to be. At 9:45 Willy got one goal in 7 games in the Boston series...... Well Jake G. Gave Boston what 5 ...... And Mr.B love Jake!! If Toronto plays Boston in the playoffs ..... Give Jake 3 extra large and let him eat them in the press box...... But don't worry Jake Boston won't make the playoffs.....

      I can understand why people get tired of coverage of my team. I grew up a leafs fan in the 1990s before center ice and streaming. With today's tech instead of just complaining you have to vote with your feet. I now live in philly and have since 2003. I barely hear a word on the flyers in my house. I watch my stream and catch my hockey news on the Canadian sites and TH-cam channels.

    • @anonymousanonymous4238

      What I mean with my 1990s comment was I got left with the blues, stars, wings, and avalanche games and never got to watch many leaf games. My dad and I got pissed off and it got old. At least it was hockey though and back then, Tulsa Oklahoma actually had a decent number of hockey fans.

    What does Burkie know about Nylander he was working out west in Calgary.
    Nylander and Matthews have unbelievable chemistry.
    Nylander 2 goals tomorrow.
    Standing ovation.
    And a Leafs win.
    Nylander will get a power play goal.
    As Burkie says Toronto needs to start measuring the curbs in Toronto for the Stanley Cup parade.
    Tell Habs fans this time it will be in colour.
    Burkie just a miserable old fart......still bitter Leafs fired him.
    Burkie bitter his picks were not better than Dubas picks.

  • @emeraldtaco

    Burkie thinks Nylanders deal is bad.
    Nylander was signed to a 6.9 M dollar deal, and next year the cap is gonna be ~83M. Which means Dubas spent about 8.3% of the cap on Nylander.
    Let's rewind. It's 2012 and the Leafs are terrible. If you don't remember (and I don't blame you Leafs fans) this was the "18-wheeler off a cliff" season. Mikhail Grabvoski, he of the ferocious BITE, has put up back to back 20G/50P seasons (heights he would never reach again.) So mastermind GM Brian Burke decides to sign him to a 5 year 27.5 M dollar extension. That's a 5.5 M dollar AAV in 2012, when the cap was 64.3 M dollars. So that's 8.5% of the cap. 8.5% of the cap ON MIKHAIL GRABOVSKI.
    So yeah Burkie tell me again about how you can't spend that kind of money on Nylander.

    Brian Burke is right. I don't think a true leaf fan thinks they will win the cup in 2018/2019. It is fun to watch them play again and it looks promising for the future. Maybe in 3yrs. It's very hard to win the Stanley Cup.

      Wintrz - Most fans don’t hate him except for his drafting, which was awful for the most part. Rielly and Kadri were exceptions. He made some good trades to try and make the team better. Schenn for JVR was awesome. The trade for Phaneuf was amazing at the time and got us a Captain. The Kessel trade kind of worked in our favour with him being one of the all-time Leaf scorers. With that however, Burke overestimated how good our team was and as a result, we lost out on Seguin and Hamilton. So it was a good trade at the time, and a terrible one in the long run. Leafs are so good now that he’s really irrelevant.

    Whatever Burke did in the past doesn't make him wrong on this. Nylander held out and got overpaid by a million a year. 7.45 on a deal that gets one ufa year. Overpaying with marners contract coming up next year is risky. Don't lie to yourselves. If Nylander had arbitration rights he would have got 6.5 max.

    • @jacobward7507
      @jacobward7507 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The cap hit is 6.9... for a 60 point winger that is what you pay. If he improves at all (which he projects to because he is not in his prime yet) that deal is a steal in a couple years.

    Leafs fans still salty about Burkies time with them. Yes the leafs are winning games with their style and roster now, but the playoffs are a totally different season. A 7 game series where the opposing team has time to pinpoint and exploit your weaknesses. The fast and flashy style only got as far as 7 games against the team, who lost to the team, who lost to the team that won the cup...
