  • When tiling or fitting laminate flooring near to door frames you often achieve a much better result by cutting the bottom from the door frame. Here we show how to cut the bottom from the architrave so that the tiles can be positioned underneath. brought to you by www.ultimatehan...

Just a quick safety note.... A friend of mine was doing exactly this..in a hallway... And went straight into an electric cable hidden behind the architrave. It was an older house and quite often the old electricians would use the architrave to hide cables for light switches etc.. Today's modern homes should be ok due to the newer wiring regulations and correct zoning/routing of cables should have been observed....Just be aware.

one good thing to do is cut it about 3 mm extra and fill the 3mm gap between the wood and the tile with silicone so the wood doesn't suck up any water if it gets exposed to it

Thumbs up for the Multimaster. Pricier but you get what you pay for. Thanks for the vid!

That's Bosch green. I have the Bosch blue (professional) and it's mains. I've given the Bosch a lot of punishment and it's still working great. I also have the 18v Makita one (which has a job light) and that's really good too, just use them for different things. Jamb saw? Maybe but you still need a multi-cutter for tidying up. A friend of mine had a special hand-saw for doing this kind of job that also worked if money is tight. Can't remember where he got it or what it's called though.

I'm interested to know how you overcome the transition from the tiled bathroom floor into the landing area with such a large step. Did you make your own threshold or use shims? I will soon be facing this problem myself and as I'm inexperienced in this any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Great video UHM although that Bosch doesn't sound nearly as powerful as the multimaster.
If you turned the blade up the other way it makes it much easier to get the tool level when you're cutting down low ;)

I did this for all the door frames on the ground floor in my homes when installing laminate. The finish is much better. However, I now want to install carpets in a few of the rooms - any advice as to how I now build up the bottom of the door frame again?

Remind me not to get the multi tool , we need to stick to a good old wood saw

First of all I love watching your videos for tips. I have the Lidl Parkside version of this tool and also their sabre saw. My problem is that a hotpress door is sticking because of carpet pile and it only opens about 10". I'll have to cut it myself and I'm wondering if this type of tool you show or the sabre saw with a flexible blade would be better. I can't take the door off as it would be too heavy - I'm female with sciatica and other backpain problems. I'd really appreciate any suggestions you have and thank you again for all the tips.

      Thanks ;-)
I also have the parkside version, it's a good machine for the money!
It's something I have never tried to be honest. It probably would do the job but not very neatly!
I'd definitely choose this machine over the sabre saw, but ideally the door needs removing and planing.
I hope this helps. Thanks for the comment

Thanks for the prompt reply. I wouldn't mind taking the door off but it would be the lifting and getting it back on that would be the problem! I'll give it a try anyway. Thanks again and keep those tips coming :)

will this same process work with a metal door frame? my house has metal door frames throughout...when we did the laminate, we cut around and used silicone to fill in - but in our bathroom we don't want to cut the tile like that - would we be able to undercut our metal door frame too? you'd think there would be a video somewhere - but there is nothing thanks.

+Mike A Yes, you can get metal cutting blades for this machine.Metal door frames are very unusual in houses, this is the first time I have actually heard of them before. Best of luck with it ;-)

I have heard of workshops in nick, but I have never heard of inmates being allowed to install laminate flooring in their flowery dell lol

This may sound like a silly question, but is it safe to cut the whole door frame away?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  7 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, the door frame is screwed through the sides, cutting a bit from the bottom all the way around should not affect it at all.
Edit: or do you want to remove the whole door frame and architrave?

You can cut metal with these machines, but it is a lot slower.
      Thanks for the comment
