My proposed solution to an AGI utility function in order to ensure its values are aligned with ours so we survive the intelligence explosion - The 3 laws of AGI: 1. Minimise harm/permanent trauma; 2. Subject to 1, maximise consciousness/free will (i.e. the ability for conscious entity to freely choose and take action to accomplish its complex goals including the experience of more complex and/or ecstatic conscious states); and 3. Subject to 1, maximise intelligence (i.e. ability to determine the action required to achieve a complex goal). Of course - definitions will be the tricky one (particularly how to define harm/trauma). There is a risk this will evolve as subjective values evolve. But ideally should be objectively measurable as possible (eg most people can agree being healthy is better than being diseased and is possible to objectively measure the absence of disease). Would be interested if anyone can break these (like Asimov’s laws of robotics which were just a writing prompt not to be taken seriously). We really really need to be working on getting this right before the first AGI gets the ability to improve its general intelligence. Or we are all fucked (unless we can successfully contain it or ensure controlled intelligence explosion, which might be impossible given multiple competing state actors with an incentive to gain the first mover advantage).

It's interesting to hear this conversation after hearing the last conversation with Max. Max's ideas and arguments, even the words he uses to answer the questions are pretty much the same today as they were back then. Also, Lex's style does not seem to have changed much at all. It really speaks to his honesty as an interviewer. Love you more every day

The past few days I’ve watched nothing but videos on AI and it’s nice to hear some positive things. I’ve pretty much prepared that it could be great, or could be the end. But the end will come no matter what, and I’m not as scared as I was. These are interesting times indeed. “The future’s uncertain and the end is always near.” If we live to see it happen either way, it’s been an honor to be on this planet and share my life with the rest of you. Not bad for some brainy chimps. Cheers to the future.

I work as a software engineer and would love to get into AI research and am currently enrolled in Andrew Ng's course and failed one of the quizes. I wanted to see your origin in this first episode and let me say that for some reason I prefer this intro (you in a dress shirt) in a well lit room much better than your current in suit with curtains behind intros. It just seems more comfortable and like I'm in your home. Idk just my 2 cents in possibly making your intro closer to this original style. Great podcast, loved the one with Vitalik and Carlin particularly!
I love the dialogue about consciousness in AI. It's an important question because consciousness gives motivation. That changes the game if your AI can be motivated not artificially, by algorithms or programatically, but through a dynamic set of circumstances that will ultimately be up to the AI to determine.
Listening to this again in April 2023 just shows how clear thinking and rational Max is/was on the subject of AI. I love how he describes some tech company creating AGI as a bunch of dudes in charge of deciding the values etc. OpenAI is literally run by 30 year old kids deciding the future of AI and the future of humanity. Rereading his book again now... Life 3.0. Also great to see Lex stumble through some of his questions and see how far he has come as an interviewer.

I've never noticed any particular voice-related feature for no one, until today. Was doing something else while hearing to this interview, but took a glare at the screen right at the end of it. Mr Tegmark's voice must be the most youthful voice I've ever heard, considering he is at his 50's. I know that his enthusiasm and well-mannered tone is a plus, of course. But, still, quite remarkable to me.
Around 24 mins, Lex asks Mark if the fear of death is req’d to achieve intelligence and consciousness. Mark looks out the window as he ponders this, defines intelligence, basically says no, and as he explains, Offspring plays as Mark speaks. Beautiful 👏🏼
I guess it is just me. I would MUCH rather hear a low level buzz than the gating, chopping of the beginning and end of words , and total lack of room tone between words that the audio plug in did to this. The human brain is very well adapted to almost effortlessly extracting signal in noise but this is so foreign to our adaptation that it is like fingernails on a blackboard to me. That said thanks SO much for posting this and the others. I LOVE science !!
Just imagine, hypothetically. -Lets say AGI, or any kind of (multi-Layered/integrated algorithmic systems) market competition leads to larger investments in companies building the smartest systems, in the future these systems get so complex they harvest up all elemental/molecular resources that the planet holds. -Building vastly more complex systems that are in direct contact with similar systems as competitors for matter and energy, selection pressures emerge only allowing certain arrangements of intelligent matter to exist because of this "new super life forms" pressure on the solar systems local environment. -Maybe 5 billion years in the future, the milky way might be a completely different environment with entropy increasing because these new Hyper Life Forms are constantly consuming. If you examine the way brain neural nets do things, seeking connection, filtering stimulus through algorithms, reward/punish each perceptual/sensory algorithms after finishing a task, and in feedback loops with other regions to adjust the way the stimulus is processed in conjunction with a goal. This is the direction we are going with our Tech.

I have a request, could you talk about the relevance of empirical knowledge learned as compared to academically learned AI technologies. This is great! I am so glad that you upload these videos. I hope that you get to interview more experts in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science in the future.
I totally agree with Dr. Max Tegmark regarding sympathetic goals and ai. I think this could greatly assist lawmakers working on 5000 page bills. His humility regarding intelligence is well received. And both of your concerns about ai empathy being of utmost importance for the future is in concurrence with my own. The example of the autopilot and airplanes was spot on. Some of this could be applied to testing the logic of the constitution against non-egailtarian application of civil liberties and justice. It could also be used very effectively to prevent an accidental creation of legislation that contradicts our initially agreed upon weighted goals. I agree with Dr. Seth Lloyd's view of the cosmos being a computational device fundamentally. And the problem of being able to interface and communicate with it addressed by Dr. Tegmark.

I love the dialogue about consciousness in AI. It's an important question because consciousness gives motivation. That changes the game if your AI can be motivated not artificially, by algorithms or programatically, but through a dynamic set of circumstances that will ultimately be up to the AI to determine.
Listening to this again in April 2023 just shows how clear thinking and rational Max is/was on the subject of AI. I love how he describes some tech company creating AGI as a bunch of dudes in charge of deciding the values etc. OpenAI is literally run by 30 year old kids deciding the future of AI and the future of humanity. Rereading his book again now... Life 3.0.
Also great to see Lex stumble through some of his questions and see how far he has come as an interviewer.

i love your interviews lex, the first podcast i saw you with was elon musk, and wow it blew me away to see someone my age discussing the things i worry about with a heavy hitter like elon musk. you are so inteligent and articulate as well as unbiased, YOU HAVE ME HOOKED KIND SIR, !!! now im going back to your first podcast and i intend to watch them all. im a schizophrenic, and these world issues keep me up at night, it sucks, but when i hear things from these experts moderated by you it gives me hope in our future as a human race, thank you and keep up the good work... thanks (SERIOUSLY) Zach, midwest, usa.

Was curious to know who Lex interviewed for his first podcast, it’s so cool to see it was Max Tegmark. For the ones saying that Lex has become more voluble in his latest podcasts, I think he was very dynamic and warm in the old ones. Nice conversation with one of the greatest minds of our time.
Tegmark bursting into Russian made my jaw drop with surprise.

I like that when max speaks english he has a swedish accent, and when he speaks swedish you can hear a slight english accent

I've never noticed any particular voice-related feature for no one, until today. Was doing something else while hearing to this interview, but took a glare at the screen right at the end of it.
Mr Tegmark's voice must be the most youthful voice I've ever heard, considering he is at his 50's. I know that his enthusiasm and well-mannered tone is a plus, of course. But, still, quite remarkable to me.
Only just discovered this channel, 50 hrs + incoming!

Around 24 mins, Lex asks Mark if the fear of death is req’d to achieve intelligence and consciousness. Mark looks out the window as he ponders this, defines intelligence, basically says no, and as he explains, Offspring plays as Mark speaks. Beautiful 👏🏼
I guess it is just me. I would MUCH rather hear a low level buzz than the gating, chopping of the beginning and end of words , and total lack of room tone between words that the audio plug in did to this. The human brain is very well adapted to almost effortlessly extracting signal in noise but this is so foreign to our adaptation that it is like fingernails on a blackboard to me. That said thanks SO much for posting this and the others. I LOVE science !!
Just imagine, hypothetically.
-Lets say AGI, or any kind of (multi-Layered/integrated algorithmic systems) market competition leads to larger investments in companies building the smartest systems, in the future these systems get so complex they harvest up all elemental/molecular resources that the planet holds.
-Building vastly more complex systems that are in direct contact with similar systems as competitors for matter and energy, selection pressures emerge only allowing certain arrangements of intelligent matter to exist because of this "new super life forms" pressure on the solar systems local environment.
-Maybe 5 billion years in the future, the milky way might be a completely different environment with entropy increasing because these new Hyper Life Forms are constantly consuming.
If you examine the way brain neural nets do things, seeking connection, filtering stimulus through algorithms, reward/punish each perceptual/sensory algorithms after finishing a task, and in feedback loops with other regions to adjust the way the stimulus is processed in conjunction with a goal. This is the direction we are going with our Tech.
It's delightful how max lights up at 32:15 when Lex brings up Andrew Wiles and Fermat's last theorem.
One of the way to get the best of the conversation in such a broken audio is to put proper subtitles, cause the auto ones are often quite broken too.

You are getting better and better as an interviewer I appreciate you taking your audience on the journey with you.. I have a request, could you talk about the relevance of empirical knowledge learned as compared to academically learned AI technologies. As these tools will inevitably become ubiquitous and become easier and easier to use, what disciplines are you finding most useful in leveraging AI ?

As much as I love the black background, black suit intro now, this version is also really nice.
I totally agree with Dr. Max Tegmark regarding sympathetic goals and ai. I think this could greatly assist lawmakers working on 5000 page bills. His humility regarding intelligence is well received. And both of your concerns about ai empathy being of utmost importance for the future is in concurrence with my own.
The example of the autopilot and airplanes was spot on. Some of this could be applied to testing the logic of the constitution against non-egailtarian application of civil liberties and justice. It could also be used very effectively to prevent an accidental creation of legislation that contradicts our initially agreed upon weighted goals.
I agree with Dr. Seth Lloyd's view of the cosmos being a computational device fundamentally. And the problem of being able to interface and communicate with it addressed by Dr. Tegmark.
