Please check my interpretation. I'm not a Theravada Buddhist I am a lay person with the Mahayana branch and try to practice Jodo Shinshu Pureland Buddhism but, my interpretation of the Talaputa Sutta is the following. The Buddha is not talking about all passions. Buddha is talking about the passions in people that not devoid of aversion and are inspiring dellusion by intoxicating the audience in whatever means... a drug, a bribe of any kind, charismatic lying with a gang of people in the audence starting a frenzy, comedic satiric lying etc... Certainly the passion to learn Buddism is not wrong. Another passion that is not wrong is to love others. These are good passions. He does not mean that freedom of speech, by the actor, is wrong, if it stops suffering. He means the person or group that slanders or causes suffering to another is wrong. Buddha to me is clearly talking about people that cheat, decieve and fool others and cause suffering. To lie is to play the role of a evil type of actor which is what a liar is. This causes suffering and is wrong in Buddhism. He does not necessarily mean literally an actor on the stage were it is understood that the actor is lying to convey a message. There are actors that teach Buddhism to children that must teach that lying leads to suffering. They are not the type actors we are talking about. I think what the Buddha is saying is that in every profession there are some people that play this evil type of actor. A role in everyday life that cause suffering. These evil type of actors in some sence cause suffering that could lead them to have a future bad Karma that could compound and lead them in a path to Buddhist hell. For instance, to use your example, if a travel agent books a person on a vacation to an area that he knows is having a terrible storm, for profit or whatever reason, and the people going on this vacation do not know there is a storm there, this is wrong. If in going there on a plane and the plane crashes or when they arrive the hotel collapse on them and they are killed. In this case, the travel agent would be causing great suffering. Another extreme example of many evil type of actors that were the people in power in NAZI germany. When the ministry of health and others told people they had to go to the hospital to get help for their illness. Their illness was orginaly caused by these Nazi gangs in power before they were encouraged to go to the hospital. When they got to those hospitals they did not recieve help but, were tortured or put to death. They were decieved, cheated and fooled that caused great suffering. Now, I continue to say: I go to the Buddha for refuge, I go to the Dharma for refuge and I go to Sanga for refuge. Gassho, TL
