Pretty sure that was within a day of me camping on Ben Lomond. Had the exact same issue with winds kicking in too. Had my ice axe in my bag which saved the day. Without that I’d had been in the same boat. Great edit nonetheless. Fantastic video
I’ll definitely have to remember my axe next time. I’d left it on the side at home when I was rushing out the day before and might have helped but not even sure I would’ve been good with that as it was hard and crumbling too.
Definitely not a fail, you did the most sensible thing in heading down. Stunning views - shame I missed being out in the snow this year 😭what a brilliant idea staying at the yha - hope you had a good night
I’m sure you’ll still have some more opportunities as we’re supposed to be getting a lot of snow at the start of February so guess we’ll see if that still happens. Fingers crossed. Love staying at the YHAs and always really handy. Glad I did it that night rather than driving back
The daylight shots and views are the best part for me, and they looked incredible. You were hammering those pegs with the stone incredibly quickly, what a skill!
Cheers Phil and me too. Really didn’t want to head up there that day as I’ve been up there lots but met some really nice people on the way, had some good conversations and some awesome views so no regrets.
Thanks David and appreciate that. Awesome route and views although it’s definitely more of a slog up Helvellyn from Whiteside. I normally go the opposite way around.
Always enjoy your stuff Kris 😁 Keep em coming this year! If you get the free time.......bang a few multi dayers in. You cover those brilliantly 🙂 All the best for 2025 mate, Adge.
Cheers Adge I appreciate that bud. I can’t wait to get on the multi day hikes again. Just tricky this time of year with the weather and the shorter days but 100% I’ll get them started as soon as feasible as literally thrive doing them I love it. All the best to you too bud
Beautiful conditions there bud. I think that was the same week I was out with Andy. I had to use my ice axe to dig out the ground so I could get my pegs in. Bummer that you had to bail but looks like you still had a great trip. ATB pal 🙏🏻
Aah good to know Dave. I forgot my ice axe on this one..normally have it too as that could’ve been a shout. I’m going to get some nails to try for next time and take a hammer 😂. Let me know when you’re good to get out we should get on a camp.
Enjoy a beer on me … the snow and ice always makes it more difficult… you’re the 3rd vlogger to bail in that week and all good decisions makes my CW completion in 3 days feel all the greater 😂💪
Cheers Andrew you’re a gent thank you, really appreciate that. Well done on the CW too. One of my favourite hikes that, I did it over 3 days last year so know what you mean. 55km on the last day from Keswick to Carlisle it’s a slog isn’t it. When did you do the CW?
Enjoyed the video, absolute nightmare when the ground is frozen. I had the opposite last year, snapped a couple of pegs trying to remove them from the rock hard frozen ground. Beautiful scenery so was still worth getting out 👍
Thank you. Yeah it’s certainly a challenge isn’t it. Never even thought about the troubles to get pegs out at times. I’d always rely on the tie outs on the pegs to remove them however in frozen ground I can just imaging the difficulty.
Thank you. And yeah someone suggested that later however really too much messing for that bearing in mind there are 6 guys for main tent and 6 for guylines. Plus the sun was setting. But I see your point. Never had that issue before.
You made the right decision to bale out Kris, if the wind picked up at night you would have had a problem. Some brilliant video footage and some epic scenes you gave us so thanks for that. Thanks for sharing this video and looking forward to your next one.
Yeah I literally give the rent a shake and all the pegs just popped out. They were only in an inch and the ground had zero purchase. I still had an awesome day with cracking views and as I ended up heading to a YHA eventually after a long trek back to the car it meant I could head out again the next day for a day hike.
Alway great to find a new Vlog from you Kris. What fantastic weather, been out a lot on the hills in Snowdonia for day hikes only during the cold spell but no overnighters.
Thank you 🙏🏼. I bet it’s been ace over there though. When the next lot of snow hits I need to get myself back over to Snowdonia as love it there too. Lakes just closer for me now.
Great Hike Kris, I love camping in those conditions but it can be a challenge getting the pegs in for sure, I've occasionally wished I had a hammer drill with me 😁 Enjoy yourself and stay safe.
Haha now I definitely needed that. Next time I’ll take my hammer as that’ll be a big help. I literally put a hole right through the thick rock. Wish I’d taken a picture.
Nice video Kris, it’s really good to see you back out. You made the right decision and as you said had a great day out. I camped on Stybarrow Dodd last weekend and really struggled getting the pegs in but just about managed would have probably done the same and called it if I hadn’t succeeded. Atb Karl 👍
Thank you. And yeah it can be tough up there too with some rocky ground and hard to see in the snow. I loved my camp up there the views are awesome aren’t they. Glad you got them in. But yeah if you can’t you have to make a decision in time with the light too so happy with my decision.
Cheers Andrew appreciate that pal. Yeah it’s never nice to have to leave but the right decision as it was pitch black at the bottom and even when I got to the road I had to walk for another 50 mins to get to the car.
No apology needed, you tried and did the right thing to bail. About to pitch my Soulo for the first time, instructions suggest the red pole goes over the top.
Thanks for the info. I literally never read the instructions 😂. I often put it over the top but find putting underneath the two poles is tighter and the hood fits a bit more flush. Although probably should stick to how it’s advised. You’ll love the SOULO. Just peace of mind when the weather undoubtedly comes in.
@krisgleave It's that peace of mind that I wanted. I have had issues with my Abisko 1 and everyone just said "get a Soulo". A lot of money but they retain value and will probably last for years. Great design too. Unboxing video this evening 😀
Thank you. Really interesting thinking there…maybe so. However it’s also challenging to avoid rocks when you can’t see the ground and the ground was literally solid. I guess that’d be a good one to try one day. Would’ve definitely been dark on this one.
Which night was this Kris? I ask because I descended from Helvellyn on the night of Friday 10th, also because the pegs bounced off the ground like Nerf pellets off Kevlar. Slept down in Keppel Cove instead.
Hahaha I know what you mean and yes it was the same night. Must be all the freeze thaw and obviously always a bit of a challenge pegging there anyway when you can see the ground let alone when you can’t.
@krisgleave well I feel a whole lot better about it now. I've camped up there in lower temperatures before but not after it being subzero for so long. "Earth stood hard as iron" and all that. Still, I had a gorgeous moonlit night in the Cove and was in pole position for the NW ridge of Catstycam in the morning.
I basically only go in the snow or below freezing my! Lol solo to boot! I almost always use snowshoes, even in snow like you have. Never slipping worth extra little weith to me! Poles are a must, ice is real haha My last camp i had at least 3 feet of really light snow and rock solid ground 😂
I only used spikes on this that were essential but I’d love to get hold of some snow shoes just to have a try when the snow is deep as think they’d be great. Beast from the east is due in 10 days so maybe an opportunity to get some for that. Yeah the ground can be really solid can’t it. Next time I’m going to take a hammer for the pegs.
@krisgleave lol you must be talked about the cold front in the USA atm! I was truck camping tonight, testing my gear at -25F/-31C , thankfully heater working well and keeping well above freezing!
@SuperdutyExplorer wow really that cold? Yeah it’s heading to us but they’re expecting it around the 2nd Feb with 10cm of snow. Let’s see what happens. Glad you had a heather for that one. Brutal!
@SuperdutyExplorer wow that’s crazy isn’t it. I spent some time out working in Houston TX which was awesome a few years ago. I did 3 weeks there and 1 week home for 6mths. Can only imagine what it’s like with the cold.
Hi Sam, this was 10 days ago. Only patches around at the moment so it's pretty clear now. The Beast from the East is due start of February and should be some serious snowfall then
Yeah I did consider it to be honest and probably should’ve done. Just didn’t really want to be down there. I would’ve just had time with the daylight left however on that side of the mountain it was much darker too as lost light really quickly. Looks a lot brighter in the video with exposure but it was much darker.
Yeah my thoughts exactly. Still got to appreciate the view and really enjoyed it. I’ve camped on Helvellyn plenty of times so not too fussed but such a perfect night for it and it’s rare it’s like that
Hi kris no shame the mountain isn’t going anywhere, and the people who say you wimped out are probably sat on there sofa shovelling chocolate biscuit in to there mouths

Lovely hike Chris, beautiful scenery.👍
Thanks Carol. It really is lovely up there with snow

@krisgleave 🤞 for more snow. Yes I stay at hostels most of the time, like minded people and excellent for a single person.
Fantastic to see you out again Kris, No apology needed you always give great content, Look forward to seeing the next vid .
Thanks Jim I appreciate that. Definitely content for the next 2-3 weeks and plan to be out again very soon. Need to keep at it now.
The daylight shots and views are the best part for me, and they looked incredible. You were hammering those pegs with the stone incredibly quickly, what a skill!
Hahaha the video was speed ramped at that point as I was whacking them for ages 😂. Yeah awesome views up there
Ha I thought that was you when I was up there the other week. You caught me coming into shot at minute 16:07. Love the channel mate :)
Thanks
Aah that’s really kind thanks so much Colin
Amazing work man, area looks and feels just amazing!
Thank you. Honestly it was such a lovely view that day
Enjoyed that Kris, subbed 👍 example of good risk management here so just as interesting for that perspective, will watch more of your videos ATB
Cheers Michael I appreciate the feedback and great to have you as part of the community.
Another great video, Kris. I always keep an eye out for your videos, and always enjoy them.
Aah thank you and I know, you always support me I appreciate it
@@krisgleave I do my best. I know how difficult it can be to get your voice heard on TH-cam.
Nice one Kris, love that mountain, 😉👍

Awesome mate, have a great week 👍
Another fantastic bit of viewing Kris, very watchable and entertaining. Thanks for the video mate.👍🙂
Cheers Hengists really enjoyed the hike but shame about the camp. Luckily we will have more snow again in a couple of weeks can’t wait for that.
Great to see the regular videos again pal 😊
Thanks Andrew it’s great to be bank out. Trying to be consistent now
The views were stunning. Thank you for the video. 😊
Thanks Colin. Honestly it’s another level with blue skies and snow on the ground. Awesome.
Never a fail things don’t always go to plan what a great day out in those conditions and that route up looked very good 👍
Thanks David and appreciate that. Awesome route and views although it’s definitely more of a slog up Helvellyn from Whiteside. I normally go the opposite way around.
Great vid, kudos.
Cheers Kev

@@Peter-Lindsay Great idea
Really enjoyed this, keep them coming.
That weather caught loads of people put, we had to cut short our hike as it was too hard to walk in
Thanks for the feedback. Yeah you made the right decision as it was definitely tough conditions
Great vid mate!
Just a thought on the frozen ground/pegs…
Boil your stove and pour it on the place you wanna stick a peg?

once again mate..awesome video and a pleasure to listen to you describe your little jaunt 😅

Thought the mach loop was down in snowdonia ✈️
Yeah spot on…I mean the loop in the lakes. I’ve called it the Mach Loop so many times haha.

Just watched it. Look happy with the tent. For the zip. I use electrical tape around every zip (rather than cutting them off) so mine don’t jangle.
@krisgleave top tip, thanks!
Sir was good you stopped and gave your time to the two gentleman you met.
Aah thank you. Stopped and chatted for ages but only showed a very brief part. That day I stopped and spoke to lots of people it was a really nice day
A great video seeing the snow in the Lake District nonetheless. Is it possible to boil some water and pour it where pegs need to go in? Maybe not.

Yup sure is. I meant the loop in the Lake District with the low level flying. Think I was getting confused with the naming in Wales
