Drive Home in my 300 I6 F150

  • I just purchased a GoPro camera, so I figured I'd try it out. Just a mixed freeway/city drive home in my 94 F150 2wd with the 300 I6 (4.9L) Mazda 5 speed combo with 3.08 gears. I hope to do an exterior driving video soon with exhaust. Truck is completely stock with the exception of no cat/resonator, and a Napa turbo muffler ($50). In my opinion, this is the best sounding Inline 6 I've heard. Maybe I'll get a few more towing videos up too. Not bad for 23 years old and 210,000 miles.

    This is a perfect driving video. No crappy music, no yapping, and it shows the view outside instead of just showing the dash cluster, so you get an idea of what things look like if you drive one of these. Perfect set up for a driving video - thanks for this!

    Strange how much I enjoy watching this. When I was young I bought a bare bones 1986 F150 with the 300 six and a 3 speed automatic. It was new, and not that much money as I recall; even though I had very little, I could still afford it. I remember driving to work with my infant son in the middle, wife on the other side. That truck carried us through a lot of tough times. Today, we're all still well, we're comfortable moneywise and that infant son is a doctor . . . but I still miss those days more than anything. Sad that you can't go back.

    Great video 👍 i have a 96 with 448k Miles, I still keep on trucking, bought it brand new in 96. My oldest son is going to be driving next year, thinking about passing the truck to him. They really dont make trucks like they used to. I love the simplicity of my truck, none of the fancy electronics and tv screens. Just a work truck that has served me reliably throughout the years, going to work, hunting, hauling my Small fishing boat, and most importantly never left me stranded. I feel like the big Auto manufacturers doesn't care about the blue caller worker anymore, and won't provide a affordable work truck at a good price. Its all about making the most profit and make a vehicle's that are to complicated that owners can't work on them. Anyway thanks for the great video, glad TH-cam recommended this video. Keep on Trucking.

    Grew up with my dad's '93, with the 300. He sold the plow that was on it, and gave the truck away with it. The thing was rotted to hell, but the guy ended up restoring it entirely, and sold it a number of years later. This past week, I bought an old Asplundh woodchipper with a 300 in it, so I get to hear one in person again

      th-cam.com/video/HO7C01HvNSc/w-d-xo.html
      It does exceptionally well for towing, at least here in Michigan where we don't have mountains like the Rockies. This is the exact same truck towing a 2001 F150. I pull 6,000-8,000lbs with it several times a year, and it has no issue whatsoever. Just make sure you've got good brakes on the truck, and a trailer brake controller is a must. I actually prefer the I6 to a V8 just because of the torque curve and not having to rev it up to 4-6k rpms to make it up a hill or merge on the freeway. This is one of a couple towing videos I have on my channel. Hopefully it gives a decent idea of what I tow, and how effortlessly the truck does it. My truck is a 2wd 5 speed with the 3.08 gearing. 226,000 miles.

      I have a 1985 F-150 with the 6 cylinder and the same overdrive transmission. It doesn't really have any major problems but the transmission is slowly eating itself alive. Runs fantastic though. Acceleration is a bit sluggish with the 3.55 rear gear and 31 inch tires but it is overall a great truck. It even has a new Flowaster exhaust system on it.

      The Mazda 5 speed is the factory option for the manual transmission for these model years. Mileage varied, but I would say around 13-14 city, and 19-22 highway if empty. Towing anything over 2,000lbs and it drops to around 11mpg both city and highway.

      Hope that the trans is a ZF5 and not the Mazda 5. I have the Mazda, and it is only ok. I do tow with mine (7,000lbs maybe 5 times a year), and have towed very heavy before (12-15,000lb shingle trailer on one occasion), but its first and reverse gears are much taller, input shaft bearings are weaker, and sychronizers are more fragile than the ZF. Definitely make sure the synchros and seals are ok before buying it, or you'll be looking at a trans rebuild before long. Other than that, I'm not aware of any frequently occuring mechanical issues these trucks have. You literally cannot do better than the 300 i6, the best gasoline truck motor ever made.

    Nice ride. Had one of those and miss it. You can replace some plastic gear box mechanism and tighten the shifting and replace the rubber plugs on the mazda box, which always leak and destroy the tranny. I bought it with 2.73 gears which were howling and dropped in 3.35 or something and it was so much better to drive and clutch. That engine with all new ignition components took a big timing advance without a problem.

    • @caasiwms

      Dan O'Connor i had the transmission fully rebuilt about 60,000miles ago, should be all set :). Thanks for the suggestion though! I do wish that I had been able to find a ZF S5-42 though, much lower first and reverse gear for easy towing. Oh well, the truck does fine as is

    • @thedroc6
      @thedroc6 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That tranny has a bad rap but the fail is usually caused by the plugs leaking and fluid disappearing without the owner even knowing. Check this

    • @caasiwms

      Dan O'Connor mine failed because the truck sat for 4 years when my brother had it. A mouse built a nest in the bell housing, which caused the clutch to fry and tranny to overheat. What is your engine RPM while idling? My '96 with the 5spd likes 1100 ish.... Not sure if that's normal or what I could check out to bring those RPMs down.

    • @caasiwms
      @caasiwms  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Right after a cold start, it's about 1500rpm, but it falls down to around 800ish. Hard to tell, the tach is probably not exact. I don't think that 1100rpm is gonna hurt anything, but there might be a few causes. Easiest to check and fix would be the spacer on the throttle body, it should be a little screw where the throttle cable attaches that controls how far open the throttle is in a resting position. You could try giving that a few turns to lessen the gap. But the problem could also be more involved. You may have to at very least clean your throttle body from carbon/dirt build-up. Could also be a computer program, or could indicate another problem such as a plugged up catalytic converter that forces the engine to idle higher. I would say check the basic stuff first. Most likely, it's something with the throttle body.

    Wish I had gotten an XL instead of the Eddie Bauer edition but it’s still a great truck regardless

      Why? Eddie Bauer is a nicer trim package

      I guess for ‘96. I like the simple interior of the XL.

    Weird question, but how tall are you? I'm 6'1 and wondering if I'd be comfortable in a reg cab. You look like you have plenty of room.

      Andrew Ohanian I’m 5’10”, but with boots on, 6’ even. This is an extended cab, but my passengers have a decent amount of legroom. By no means as good as a new crew cab, but good enough. All it all, a comfortable truck. These front bench seats are better than any bucket seat I’ve ever sat in

      I'm 6'1, with a bench seat it's fine but I put buckets in mine and I don't like it near as much as far as room goes..

    I was thinking of trading my 03 Silverado 5.3 4x4 for one of these in mint condition... Worth it?

    • @caasiwms
      @caasiwms  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Josh Veros it’s personal preference. If I’m being 100% honest, as reliable as these trucks are, and as much as I love them, you do have to take into account that they are 20+ years old. Parts get worn, and things can break/be hard to find to replace. While I personally do trust my truck to drive cross-country a couple times a year, I don’t know if I could recommend in good conscience someone to trade a truck that’s 10 years NEWER for one of these old beasts, even in mint condition. I’d say just buy it as a second truck, and use it how you feel. But maybe not swap.
      That being said, a 300 will have a better low-end torque curve for towing than a 5.3, so while it won’t be as fast of a truck, it will have better low-end grunt and better towing capability at 2500rpm and lower

      You will have a terrible time finding one in "mint" condition, especially if you live in an area with rust. But they are great trucks!

      I wish I still had her.. I sadly sold her to my cousin when I moved to Europe 2 years ago. He uses it to haul his landscape trailers/tree debris/fire wood. Still going strong at 30 years old and 285xxx. Albeit a bit more beat up..

      @@caasiwms I wish we had trucks like this one in Europe. Sure, you can import them, but they tend to be very expensive. A regular, well-kept "beater" truck that you can get cheaply in the US would be ridiculously expensive here. Plus, with the current prices of gasoline, all the gas-guzzling is a concern. Still, I'd love to drive a truck...

      @@Havealocalife I know, I have lived in Europe for about 4 years, it was a very difficult thing to not be able to import the truck.. I have seen one or two OBS fords here, but they are really rare, and not practical.. Plus if it breaks down, there are almost no parts

      @J H L yea I do. I like it. Still got some issues to fix. It’s not very fast which is kind of a bummer for Tampa traffic. But otherwise it’s cool

    • @EKKoSYKESMusic
      @EKKoSYKESMusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @J H L you should jump on that. They’re really good trucks and built solid af. Not like these new aluminum trucks. I ran into a tree the size of a typical log with mine while out in the trails and I knocked the e tree over lol no damage to my truck. A mini van backed into the back of my truck and I didn’t even have a scratch. The mini van however crumpled like a soda can. I’ve pulled two Silverado’s out of the mud with mine (4x4) and I pulled a porshe 311 out of the ground that had sunken in after sitting 20 years. I’ve also pretty much replaced everything on it. The body has 600k and the new motor prolly has 30k by now. I’m considering doing an auto transmission swap because I get tired of shifting in the city. But other than that I love this truck and I’d recommend it for sure.
