  • Watch as Alligator Gar spawn. About 15 Alligator Gar moved up the Richland Creek channel from the Trinity River into the shallow floodwaters covering the Richland Creek Wildlife Management Area. There were two 6-7 foot female gar; each had 4-5 males trailing her. Spawning typically takes place in shallow areas of flooded vegetation when springtime water temperatures exceed 68 degrees. Eggs hatch within a couple of days. Young fish feed on larval fishes and insects.

    Here's some cool footage of Alligator Gar spawning. 4 male gar are trailing the female waiting for her to release her eggs so they can fertilize them.

    Around 10 years ago I actually witnessed a huge alligator gar spawning event with family members in a shallow cove on the Brazos River. It happened after a few days of rain and highwater. Seriously there had to be literally hundreds of them splashing in the shallows. They seemed to totally ignore us being there in our canoes. They were more focused & involved pursuing one another around the mossy rocks & debris next the bank(very similar to how carp spawn). Some even got close enough to tail-slap & bump the canoes we were in as they frantically & sometimes passively chased other gar around the site. Like bass, I guess the big ones are the females, as you would see them being trailed by 5 -15 smaller male gar. Just guessing, but some of the bigger ones looked like they could maybe go 80 -100lbs. We knew they were alligator gar because most of them were too big and wide to be anything else. I've never seen that many huge fish in one area in all my life, and haven't since. We just quitely sat there amongst them in our canoes watching in awe! It was A real privilege.
    I believe if state fish and wildlife agencies could stop indiscriminate bowfishing long enough to build a robust population of them in the Mississippi River and it's tributaries, these fish could put a sizeable dent in the Asian Carp population & possibly restore some balance to our altered river systems. Apparently these fish are quite intelligent & can become quite tame. Check this out: Fun with My Alligator Gar th-cam.com/video/PE-SkcIeFcE/w-d-xo.html

      Those were my thoughts exactly! These fish look extremely well fed and then has to be a big part of the reason - the buffet of invasive fish. Question is how many native fish do they eat?

    • @65FullMoon83
      @65FullMoon83 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jenng9021 They mainly eat bait fish like shad, herring & small buffalo & carp, or so I've read. They're not near as damaging to gamefish populations as once thought.

    Let em grow until about 2,3 feet. Transplant em up to Illinois. Where them
    Asain carp are. LET EM EAT ❗

      In 2010, the IDNR's Division of Fisheries began an Alligator Gar reintroduction program. During that time, Alligator Gar were stocked in a few waterways, including the lower Kaskaskia River.
      It's till going on, with approximately 750 fish stocked into Horseshoe Lake in Alexander County on July 26 2019.

    Do mature alligator gars breed every years

    • @texasparksandwildlife
      @texasparksandwildlife  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good conditions for spawning don't happen every year, and there may be years when alligator gar produce few if any offspring.

    What is the spawning ritual with alligator gar? Are they picking up pheromones from the female? How do they know she is ready to spawn?

    • @texasparksandwildlife
      @texasparksandwildlife  9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Daniel Sosa We don't know for certain but based on observations it is likely the release of some chemical cue. Multiple males follow so when the female releases her eggs onto vegetation or woody debris, they can fertilize them. Other fish species have evolved where multiple males frequently fertilize the eggs of one female. This behavior should result in offspring with greater genetic diversity.

      Spotted gar and longnose gar may reach sexual maturity within two to four years. If they are alligator gar, I would not have expected the gar to spawn quite yet. Age at which they start to spawn may vary somewhat depending on latitude and whether the fish is male or female. A male might become sexually mature at about 5 or 6, but a female will take a bit longer and may even be 10 years old before they begin spawning.
      Also, depending on the size of the pond and conditions they may not spawn, even if capable. Some adult gar kept in a 1-acre pond on our research station spawned in some flooded grass soon after they were put in the pond; however, the fish haven’t attempted to spawn again in the past 6 or 7 years. Alligator gar seem to require a very unique set of conditions before they will attempt to spawn. They need rising water and flooded terrestrial vegetation at just the right time of year (April-May). If conditions aren’t perfect, it is much more advantageous for the fish to actually reabsorb their eggs and utilize that energy. Also, alligator gar are very cannibalistic and tend to prefer to eat their own kind instead of other species. In a small pond they may quickly reduce the numbers if they did spawn.
