    What an incredible band. i get a bit of a Mingus' 1964 band vibe from them - the way Brecker and Liebman offer 'comments' to Lovano's solo from the side of the stage @ 4:31 - like Johnny Coles and Eric Dolphy would to to Clifford Jordan. Billy's @ 6:44 also reminding me a bit of Donny Richmond, and Phil Markowitz's comping also a bit in a Jaki Bayard bag. I'm sure they love that classic sextet, which like this band here, was one hell of an ensemble. Three of the most incredible sax solos I ever heard them play This gig must have been historic. Thanks for sharing.

      Brecker always like this kind of experimental stuff = too many sax voices for me - but then just the Piano, Bass and that great drummer - all together = Straight Ahead Jazz man...top shelf!

    I'm finally seeing this. I remember when it was live-streamed back in the days of dial-up. I think this was one of the first time anything like this had been done. I spent the entire time trying to connect and never got to see it.

      Yes, it was introduced by the folks at Birdland as the first of its kind live over internet from a NYC club, I arrived at this event one hour before it started, had an excellent burger there at the bar, sat thru the whole fantastic show. ..I was on Greyhound bus from Texas, on my way to Maine, midnight in Atlanta I heard Steve Cushing on “Blues Before Sunrise” go thru the club schedule in NYC - but for once the reading of shows was of some use for me!…he mentioned this show, I left my bag behind counter with the bus package folks at Port Authority (not allowed since 9/11) went to Birdland for dinner and show!

    I remember streaming this live when the performance took place. It was a novelty at the time to be able to do that. Funny how quickly we get used to things. My dad, a saxophone player as well, was visiting and we watched it together. We both thought that Brecker stole the show!

    for anyone whose heart broke when eric dolphy died, it's making me warm all over to swing along in my chair listening to these most worthy wailers, seeming exponents of the dolphy school of hard bop. that improvising together is so difficult to pull off well, it seldom happens by amateurs or pros, and here it's a gas. bravo and crank up the volume to indoctrinate the neighbors!

    Lots of beginner listeners/non-players commenting below. As a pro player; can't say I liked where they all 3 played in the beginning. Lavano is killing... like usual. Brecker> genius. The RS was weird for Dave's solo in the first third of his solo..So much so, he had to say "come back in,' he was sounding as like he couldn't get airborne. Then he did! The end where they were all playing...so brilliant melodies!

    • @pectenmaximus231
      @pectenmaximus231 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok? And as a "pro-player" I think the intro clearly showcased their deep musicality? E.g. Listening driving the sense of harmonic direction

      They were very very close friends so who knows?

    • @erickmiranda0325
      @erickmiranda0325 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure but they are also completely different players. Whenever the three were playing together it always sounded like Brecker was laying stuff down that grounded himself in the tune while Liebman and Lovano went out to space. Even ending the tune it seemed like Brecker was done with the vamp long before Lovano and Liebman. An interesting contrasting dynamic. They each go outside of the tune in their own way which makes it a fascinating listen.

    Having listened to Michael Brecker for over 35 years, I reckon he has to be the greatest jazz soloist of all time. I never ever ceased to be amazed by him. I don't know of any tenor player or any muscian who was that consistently brilliant. Not Joe Henderson, not Wayne Shorter, not anybody. Every solo a masterpiece. No bullshit. Crystal clear articulation, amazing architecture, taste, the arc of the solo. amazing lines, amazing musicality. always in, even when out. a satisfaction in his melodic lines, you can even hear the melody in the spaces, the fire, the feeling, the passion, the rhythmic pulse and variety, the technique, the perfection. He might rest on Coltrane's shoulder's, but he brought the Coltrane vibe to a new level and I reckon outstrips him. But nobody has that record. Every solo. Perfect. Not even Coltrane. Now maybe had Coltrane lived....

    This beginning of this song was the basis for these lyrics form Chuck Berry: I've have no kick against modern jazz, Unless they try to play it too darn fast, And change the beauty of the melody,
    Until they sound just like a symphony.

    It looks like it hurts a lot for Dave to do what he does. He seems to have missed a key lesson from his teacher Joe Allard about playing up/out to reduce strain in the throat. And relaxing the facial muscles to free up movement in the same area.

    In watching this I feel jazz is dead. Played out. Everything that needed to be said has been said. The best thing about this was the piano solo. Overall I am reminded of the old joke that blues musicians play three chords in front of thousands of people, while jazz musicians play thousands of chords in front of three people. Miles and Getz had more or less the final word.
