All I can say is I have been using mine for over 4 years, and everything works perfect. It has very good sound, and has been reliable. Only complaint is the cassette control buttons are very hard to read, and the labeling of all buttons are hard to read. You got to get your face right up in there to see them.
Look for any rust or corrosion on the battery contacts. Use a wire brush or small piece of sandpaper and clean the springy thingy and the other non springy side of the battery compartment. Hopefully that will get you up and going.

Is having standby constantly displayed, is this a defect?
No. That's normal.
How to program CD player to continue CD play all day.
With the CD stopped, press the (PLAY MODE) button until the repeat symbol is showing on the screen.
