    I have the older sony boom box that came out before this one. And its still working great and looks new even tho I've had it about 6 years now. Its very similar to this model. And the sound quality isn't much different.
    I love my little vintage Sony boombox.

      What model is it?

    • @peacearchwa5103
      @peacearchwa5103 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is it the CFD-S50? It's the same size but a couple of trim details are different. I think this one has a sleep turn-off feature not included on the earlier unit.

    Nice review! I have one too, and am very impressed how well the auto-record level works on the tape when recording from the built-in CD player... the tapes sound great on my 3-head Yamaha deck...no compression or 'pulsing' of levels; just good, clean recordings!
    Playabck for radio and spoken-word cassettes are great too, even through the built-in speakers - for music, it's limited, yeah... but still doesn't too bad!! (Good enough if you don't want to wake the neighbours with the main Hi-Fi!!)

    This snapped one of my tapes today. I put it in and it played, rewound it and it snapped. Absolutely gutted as rare and only just bought it. So beware.. Found this after watching your ‘repairing a tape’ vid!

      Was your machine brand new or had you used it for awhile? If you had used the cassette player, have you cleaned the tape heads, capstan and pinch roller? What condition was the cassette which malfunctioned - was the pressure pad missing, or was the tape sticky? If it's an older tape you haven't used for awhile, it's always a good idea to make a fast-forward and rewind cycle in order to loosen up the tape, guide rollers and slip sheets so it plays better. I haven't had my CFD-S70 "eat" any tapes yet, but I don't know if your unit is a "lemon".

    I bought mine five months ago. It was manufactured in September 2020. I agree the recording quality on Type I cassettes is pretty decent, and playing those recordings on a good home-audio deck is satisfactory - you might not even notice the difference unless you were really listening for it. The only criticism I have is the cassette unit does not have a sensor for Type II (70 uSec) playback, so playing your old chrome/high bias tapes is going to be very bright. The CD player works well. Sony had a recall on older units with defective CD players. I mainly listen to my unit connected (via headphone output) to my home audio stereo system.

      I hope you've opened the box and played the unit. With newer units, given some of the QC issues of mass-produced Chinese products, I've learned always to take it out of the box and start testing everything out immediately in case there's anything defective. That way you can return the product while it's still eligible for returned.

    I had a 80 W Sony boombox lasted 11 yrs CD player, would skip if there are imperfections in disc, but otherwise fine, cassette player carried on working, also had power switch, 110/220V FM radio was not great, I just rigged up a tinfoil aerial 😂😂, FM improved dramatically but I was nervous if storms were around, it had a killer sound due to the built in subwoofer, I gave it away as I preferred something more up to date that could play ipod etc. I would never buy anything that doesn't have powerful speakers eg the Sony in your video, I've also heard it damaged tapes as mechanisms are now not as good as they used to be

    How do you record off it with blank cassettes and aux?

    • @peacearchwa5103
      @peacearchwa5103 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Owners' manual is available at Sony's web site. All you really need to do is connect your external sound source into the Aux jack, then select the Aux input, then insert a blank cassette into the cassette well, play forward a few seconds past the tape leader, then simultaneously press "record" and "play", then start the Aux feed and your deck will proceed to recording. The recording level is automatically set, it's a median setting with some mild peak-limiting and very subtle gain riding. Playing your recorded tapes on another deck, you might be surprised the sound quality is decent with just some extra hiss compared with a good home-audio deck due to use of a permanent erase magnet (common in most lower-cost consumer cassette recorders made in the past three decades). You can make better recordings on well-functioning home audio tape decks, but tapes recorded on this machine won't embarrass you.

      @@peacearchwa5103 Wait you can record it from your phone through aux? I've never tried making a mixtape as it's clearly not the thing in my generation. 😂 I've always been interested how to make them though, as I've seen them around everywhere and them being played in my childhood a lot in the early 2000s. By recording them, do I have to be careful on stopping the song (in my phone) I'm recording asap before it goes through another song? or do mixtapes have an automatic stop when a song is over, like an automatic track list? like play song (track 1), stop, play another (track 2), stop.

      purple grapes: You need to do basic cassette deck maintenence.... every couple of weeks clean the playback head, capstan (the slim metal rod), and hte pinch roller (the rubber 'tyre' that presses against the capstan). Clean with a cotton bud soaked in Isopropyl Alchohol (IPA), and the cassette deck should be good to go.... this has been standard tape/cassette deck maintenence for decades.
      I agree with Keoni Marques that the recording quality on this deck is excellent, as is the playback. In my smaller room the speakers don't sound too bad for 'casual' listening. Recordings off the built-in CD player sound very nice - even on my 3-head Yamaha deck!
      Give it a regular clean and you should be good for a few more years out of this little boom-box!

    This thing is garbage. I bought one of these for the sole purpose of digitizing my tapes and it ate a very rare tape of mine, even after taking every precaution and preventative measure to ensure that wouldn't happen. It's now smashed to bits and in the trash. Good riddance to cheap rubbish....

    • @fintendonerd8457
      @fintendonerd8457 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was probably because you weren't taking care of your tapes. You should try hitting the tape against your hand from time to time to loosen the tape, and sorry to hear about your tape dude

    • @RiverOfBlacklights
      @RiverOfBlacklights 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@fintendonerd8457 No, I took/take very good care of my tapes. I have tapes that go back to the 80's and still play fine. The problem with this unit is that SONY really skimped out on it to make it affordable and in the process, the quality was sacrificed in favor of quantity. All the features that even older model, budget SONY Walkman's had before were nowhere to be seen such as anti-rolling mechanisms and tape selection.
      The actual tape head is tiny which gives you a weaker, thinner signal. For people who just want something simple and easy to play with, I guess this'll do but, for anybody that's really wanting some quality and reliability, save your money and go with something better. I know options are limited since new cassette decks are super rare nowadays but, if you look for it, you can find better equipment out there...

    • @fintendonerd8457
      @fintendonerd8457 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RiverOfBlacklights yeah, no point in getting this for playing tapes to be honest, it's fine for CDs but the tape mechanism is very cheap and could breakdown overtime.

    • @FSM_Reviews
      @FSM_Reviews 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RiverOfBlacklights The only cassette mechanism left that is still being manufactured is the Tanashin mechanisms. They have cheaper ones than this, but even the higher-end ones don't have anti-rolling or such. You just gotta make sure the tape itself doesn't have too much resistance, as these belt-drive systems aren't all that powerful and are prone to sticking if the tape is hard to pull. It's happened before on my cheap Durabrand, but that thing's 14 years old and has probably weakened drastically. And, besides, who buys a brand new cassette player for a cassette collection that cannot be damaged? You'll only find the highest-end features on older equipment from the 80's or 90's. Like Techmoan says, these new machines can't compare to the quality tape decks from back then.
      Cassettes are a dying breed of physical media only left existing due to enthusiasts and people like me who are just trying to have a bit of fun. It technically isn't the fault of the CFD-S70 that your tape got eaten- loosening the screws on that tape would've helped, or if it doesn't have screws, playing the tape with the cassette door open also works. At least then you can monitor if any of the reels has stopped. I'm sorry your rare tape got eaten, but did you really take *_all_* precautions if the worst were to happen?

    • @RiverOfBlacklights
      @RiverOfBlacklights 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@FSM_Reviews Yes, I took all the precautions. That's why my tape collection has lasted this long - cause I always took care of my tapes. I bought this player cause it was a SONY product and I thought SONY was still producing quality, reliable products like they used to. I mean, if a budget SONY Walkman from the 90's never gave me any issue, I figured, this thing shouldn't either. Especially cause it's not moving and being jostled around.
      I bought this cause as you said, cassettes are a nearly dead format now and like I said, SONY was always a good brand to me, even their budget tape players. I mean it's a cassette player, that's what it was meant to do - play cassettes. Whether it's a collection or a single re-issued cassette, the function is the same - to play it. My issue is that, SONY knows cassettes are a near dead format, therefore; it stands to reason that most cassettes played on it are gonna be old to very old. So why not put in a little extra thought into their products if they're gonna include a cassette player in this unit, to make sure that the mechanism won't easily eat cassettes?
      I understand your argument but, to say "would've, could've, should've" *_AFTER_* the fact is kinda moot. Also, I didn't buy this thing blindly either. I did my research on this unit before I bought it and most reviews were favorable - with lots of people saying they were happy with the unit, including the cassette player, which many said they bought exclusively for what? To listen to their old tape collections (most complaints were about the CD player, which I could care less about). So it wasn't like I didn't try to inform myself on what I was buying it before I bought it. You said it yourself - it was brand new - not used so, the expectation that it would work without a hitch is not *_THAT_* unreasonable, is it?...

    Hi,
    Just to let you know, Sony has a recall on these boomboxes due to their inability to read a CD. I noticed your serial number. It falls within the range of Sony's recall. If you're having any problems with playing a CD, you should contact Sony (239/245-6366) before November 30, 2021. That's when their extended warranty on the laser pickup runs out.
