Why do people have to constantly compare Uncle Albert and Grandad all the time? Why can’t we just appreciate how great, wonderfully written and amazingly played they both was. Both are great in different ways
It’s literally impossible to say who’s better out of uncle Albert and grandad all I know is they cheered me up so much and that is all a comedy actor can do... legends!
@@billygiles3276 yes but it was never going to happen. Uncle Albert did not exist to writer john Sullivan when grandad was alive. And he would never had created the character if Leonard Pierce had not died.
Great Uncle Albert: "It ain't the 1st time it's happened. I went to stay, with ya cousin Audrey, and her husband, Kevin, for a year. Sent me down to Sainsbury's to do a bit of shopping. When I got back, they'd emigrated. Not a dickie bird to me, though".
I love the way Uncle Albert gets introduced into the programme. Once my uncle popped over to see me and mum.. His sister.. This type of thing really does happen in life if you aren't careful.. If you definitely cannot handle it you have to nip it in the bud during the very small window you get between them arriving at first and getting their feet planted under the table..
This is 3rd hand info, but apparently Buster Merryfield initially experienced hostility from both Jason and Lyndhurst. They were both grieving the death of Lennard Pearce, and resented anyone trying to muscle in on his act. But they managed to swiftly resolve the awkward period, after Merryfield behaved diplomatically and spoke to them about the situation, explaining his intentions not to mimic the Grandad character. He asked them to make a better effort to support him, and they got to working very well together. Jason later admitted that he had been a little off with him at the start but wasn't really aware of being so at the time, until Merryfield talked to him about it. Jason didn't initially want to continue the series at all without Pearce. His tears in the funeral scene for Grandad were apparently genuine.
+97channel : Lennard Pearce was much loved and a hard act to follow. He played Grandad so well with not just words but little nuances/expressions. But I really warmed to Buster as Uncle Albert. He was the perfect replacement really. I think he was not only necessary as the 'third wheel' to the plots and schemes but also to show that Del and Rodney were at heart, very caring people who did have a conscience and took him under their wing. He became very much part of their family and Buster was just great.
The scene of Grandad's funeral was filmed not long after Lennard Pearce's funeral. The hostility you describe would be a normal part of the grieving process. By casting a totally new character rather than introducing a new actor to play Grandad was the right decision. David Jason was going to leave the series, with Del Boy going to Australia to work with Jumbo. If you watch the pub scene in "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" you will see Nicholas Lyndhurst lose it when Del introduces him to Jumbo.
Credit to Buster Merryfield. Lennard Pearce was a very difficult act to follow, but Merryfield took a character who was intended to be a shoehorned replacement for Grandad, and made Uncle Albert inconic in his own right.
It says a lot for all involved that OFAH went from strength to strength with Buster Merryfield/Uncle Albert replacing Lennard Pearce/Grandad. Many showers fail to recover from the departure of a leading member of the cast. Replacing Grandad with a character Del and Rodney barely knew was a masterstroke on John Sullivan's part.
That is why this is the best comedy/ tv programme ever made. I know all this about Jason and lyndhurst not wanting to continue after the death of Pearce... great stuff
Like every single bit of ofah I watched em first time round and still to this day they make me laugh just the same. I've watched it all so much it's impossible to say....but it always makes you laugh. Best sitcom ever
Funny thing is uncle Albert was always regarded as a sponge during his time with the Trotter family. But in the last episode he had the last laugh making sure his adopted family were taken care of.
Yeah Del and Rodney were both surprised when it turned out he'd left them some money in his will. And it saved them as they were on the verge of being evicted.
The debate of who was better out of Uncle Albert and granddad still rages to this day. It's hard to really compare as both were good in their own way and there's no denying that the writing itself was better during mid-late 80's and this gave Uncle Albert a much bigger role than what granddad had. Buster Merryfield certainly managed to revive the show after the death of Lennard Pearce.
I still think Grandad had his moments, and the best one was when the Trotters went to Spain and Grandad admitted to running guns during the civil war. Not something you'd associate the old duffer with doing.
Uncle albert and grandad to me are the same, you get same laughs out of them, buster was a great replacement, just a shame they never appeared early on in the show together.
No offence to the actor who played grandad but my favourite was always uncle Albert, he had the catchphrase, Buster was amazing and it was such a fantastic trio with him. Everything he did was so funny
I'd probably be inclined to agree more with you Nathan on this one. Both were excellent but for different reasons. It's hardly ever easy to fill the place of someone who becomes such a beloved character in a TV series. Particularly someone as endearingly vulnerable and simple as Grandad Trotter. However Buster Merryfield made a fantastic alternative character with his portrayal of Albert. He wasn't a clone but a contrast to his predecessor and a worthy one at that.
100% top 10 best TV shows ever made, these men are true thespians, once they are all gone I think acting will go the way of hip hop. What is it they say in the Watch? "We shall never see their like again".
Published on my birthday. Loved the bit when Del says he drove all through the rush hour to find Stan and Jean had moved- it's the way he says it that makes it so funny x
As I remember it, this was Buster Merryfields' first professional acting career, previously he had been in "am dram" and had a regular clerical job. He played the part of Uncle Albert to perfection!
Does ANYONE out there remember the episode where they played the song ZOOM by FAT LARRY'S BAND IN IT? Del Boy went out with a lady that had a LITTLE BOY , but she ended up going back to HER HUSBAND , cant remember what the episode was called , posting from ENGLAND
" Moved , whatya mean moved , what di ya mean what do i mean , its means theyve ooked the caravan on the back of the cortina and ad it away " .... Lol !!! 😁
Getting sick of reading all the comments about who was better out of Grandad and Albert. It's not Britain's Got Talent and there's no phone vote. To compare in this case is to insult.
Buster Merryfield was a relative newcomer to acting and this was one of his earliest roles. David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst both had decades of experience. Must have been difficult working alongside two actors with so much experience as well as replacing a much-loved character.
Wouldn't be surprised. In a tv programme called "Acting on Film" Michael Caine advises aspiring actors to "steal" from other actors. According to Caine all actors "steal" mannerisms, styles of delivery and the like from each other. Hardly surprising that an actor starring in a sit-com would watch a comedy master at work.
Personal opinion only I preferred Uncle Albert. I forgot about this scene. Maybe we all have relatives such as this in our families.. I know I do.. Never invite them to stay the night because you can never get rid of them and they repeat old stories endlessly..
I can't say I'm too surprised that Wings performed that song as it did sound so much like a Beatles style song. The moment where you have the spoken dialogue in the song brings to mind that used in "Yellow Submarine".
It will always be difficult picking between Grandad and Albert. Grandad had the innocent idiocy and charm that comes with being a main cast member from the start but Albert was around for the show hitting its stride. Plus Buster was such a fitness fanatic that he could have a greater range of scenes and as such could shine in a variety of areas that Grandad never could.
He had a more prominent role than Grandad plus there was his back story- he was a relative stranger to Del and Rodney. Both characters (and actors) made excellent contributions to this wonderful programme.
The show hit its peak with Uncle Albert in the cast of characters. Whether it would have done so with Grandad we'll never know. I cannot agree or disagree with you over the quality of the writing improving over time....... I suppose I'll have to watch the series from the very start......... what a hardship! Personally I think some of the best earlier episodes were the ones with Grandad having a more prominent role, such as the occasion they decorated Denzil's flat.
I remember when Uncle Albert appeared in the show and most people thought "he'll never be as good as Grandad". I think Uncle Albert was a more versatile character than Grandad, and the series went on for as long as it did partly as a result of this. Also, I think Del and Rodney's relationship with Albert was different because they had done him a favour by taking him in, whereas they felt duty bound to look after their grandfather, who was a bit vulnerable. Both actors and characters helped make the show memorable in their own way.
"Sent me down to Sainsbury's with a shopping list, & when i come back they had emigrated"

Uncle Albert turned out to be the best character in the show. "that's one 'ell of a parting you've got there".

Well said.
Grandad is much better
I couldn't tell you who I preferred. I think grandad might have had the best scenarios though. Both great in their own very different ways.
Uncle Albert all the way.he is way funnier
I wish grandad and uncle albert were together in this series! Would have been the best
That would had been good to see them both patch things up with each other after years of estrangement.
I personally preferred Uncle Albert throughout OFAH
Grandad was still good, much love to him
It was already the best.
I’ve never actually thought of that but yeah now you’ve said it I agree that would be amazing

Who agrees that Buster Merryfield (Uncle Albert) was a great actor. All in favour say I.
Especially considering that he became an actor late in life; I think Uncle Albert was his first main role.
Geoff Poole - His destined role.
