You've made a happy man feel very old! I ran a 1974 2000GTV for about ten years from the late nineties onwards. I lived in the bad old East end of London and the hoodies in my street never touched it, bless 'em! It was my courting car and it never once broke down. Did many lovely trips to Goodwood, Cornwall, Scotland etc. Probably the best car I ever owned. So much soul. Fabulous weight distribution, light, chuckable, nippy, brilliant engine, unassisted but accurate steering and it handled impeccably well beyond the limits of rear traction! 😁 MUCH better than the 911s or 323i's at the time, for example despite an obvious lack of straight line speed. Tip for you Harry: this car is absolutely made for double de-clutching .
Thank you for reminding me of all the lovely details- frameless doors (hence the wind noise), floor mounted pedals, seat belts without inertia reels that required me to assist my passengers 😜. NB You can get those very nice circular wing mirrors which help in traffic. It was also pretty practical, good rear room for small adults, decent heater, plenty of ventilation in summer, excellent visibility, narrow and short overhangs (zero crash protection) and a decent driving position for a six footer unlike most Italian cars, especially the 115 series GTV6 that effectively replaced it. I really wanted a silver one but had to settle for Blu Holandese which I grew to love. Your car looks superb. I hope you really enjoy it. I recently bought an MV Agusta Turismo Veloce and that allows me to recapture the same joy.

Thank you Harry for a wonderful review. I am 75, live in Australia and am housebound but owned 3 Alfas from 1974 for 40 years continuously. First was a secondhand 1600 Berlina which was traded in for a secondhand Alfetta 1750 due to rust then my only new one, a 2L Giulietta due to my mother dying and leaving me her estate.
My wife was very pregnant and the Alfetta had no aircon and she was really feeling the summer heat.
I was able to pick our first daughter up from the Hospital in her, the car merely a week old.
My Japanese wife learned to drive in her which the Instructor thought was fabulous.
We owned her for 24 years and finally had to sell her as our daughter was learning to drive and couldn’t handle a manual and my wife had contracted arthritis and could no longer handle the gear change or non power assisted steering.
I still recall with sadness the day I saw her driven away on the back of a truck. I had a last drive that morning and still loved ever second.
I always say that when driving Alfas they become an extension of your fingers and toes. They demand to be driven well and reward you in trumps. You know exactly what is going on, such is the unique relationship between driver and car.
So thank you for this review Harry you have made this old man very happy.
What I like about Harry is that he drives his cars instead of keeping them as investments that gets parked and never really enjoyed..... And real noise.... Not something from a speaker

In Austin, Texas (great Hill Country driving roads!) in the mid 70's I had a white step nosed 1965 Giulia Sprint GT. Sure, it was in the shop more than on the road; but dear God, it felt so good to drive that it more than made up for it. I've had many great driving cars in my 70 years; but I still long for the Alfa smile you see pasted on Harry's face.
I grew up with a 1750 GTV. It was Grandpa's, then passed onto Grandma, then to Dad. WUK 8G was the reg. When we lived in Shropshire, the farm next door had another Alfa GTV regged WUK 7G (yes, mini-races did occur). We had 3 Alfa Bertones at the same time, still have a photo somewhere of them with us 3 brothers leaning on the bonnets in school uniform. What a way to get driven to school in style. Thanks Harry, this brought back happy memories.
A lovely 2000 GTV. I'm fortunate to own a 1750 GTV. It's a wonderful car and for its almost 50 years of age, one must respect that it is no longer the track and field hero it once was but rather a classic, ageing beautifully, and still a whole lot of fun. Keep up the good work.
My favourite Alfa, from the days when we had a dealership down the road and one of these caught my eye in the showroom. I didn't realise they'd been around as long as I have.
I enjoyed this video so much I can barely contain myself! Harry, like you, I had an idea that this car would be my first. At age 11, in the San Francisco Bay Area, my dad acquired a new '74 identical to yours. I pompously fantasized that, five years down the road when I acquired my driver's license, that Dad would generously hand the keys over to me. Imagine my disappointment when -- with a need for practicality -- he traded it in for ... a '77 Oldsmobile station wagon (fake wood panels and all).
That coupe has lines that are timeless and beautiful!

Yes, it is obvious from the first frame of this video that Harry is really enthusiastic about this car. I really enjoy Harry's "Automotive Essays" (I do think they're much more that just a "report!) but he is certainly grinning all the way through it. Well done Harry!

All Italian cars of the day had this amazing sense of theatre evident here in the engine appearance, steering wheel and instrument cluster. Sublime!

closest ive gotten to one thusfar is in grand theft auto 5 lol. yes these are respresented there. that aside, i dont see too many of these in the states. i REALLY want one. a vintage flickable makes you use what it6 has and it freely gives it to you.

Harry is my chosen proxy car tester for me, his enthusiasm and joy radiates out from the P.C screen. He highlights the little touches involved with living with a car not just blasting it down the road like other testers do....putting his hand through the steering wheel to turn the ignition on :-)
Man, this is one of my top dream cars, I hope some day I will own one in red or dark green. Such a timeless design. I adore it.
My father had this version when younger (bought new) and it is one of his best car souvenir. Definitely a charismatic car.
Takes me back to when I was 8 years old. My late father had both the 1750 (in White) and 2000 GTV (in dark blue/beige interior). The first car I ever drew. It was event being taken to school in them. Brilliantly designed and pretty car. Thanks Harry.

Thanks for the memory, my late Dad had one in late 70's. What a delight, we thrashed it to the Earls Court Motor show one year. Had to limp home because we burnt the clutch out.

great car,grew up being driven to church on a sunday morning by my dad then raced home afterwards,when i got old enough to drive "borrowed"it and gave it a right caning,dad had souped up the engine and 30yrs later i can still remember the sound as that engine hit 6000 revs,absolute bliss
dude, classic! just when I got old enough to "borrow the car" dad sold the musclecar and got a fancy Cadillac. ;-( First car I bought with my hard earned was this very one. I loved it. Spun a rod at 110MPH on the way to New Orleans knocked of a good chunk of engine and with oil showering the windscreen there was a few moments of clenching! but before that point...that sound ....perfect haha! "right caning" haha well said.

just beautiful, a genuine classic. i had one in the 80's, only had 45,000 miles. very reliable, as Harry says, a real FUN car to drive. at the time i had stored at my place my brother's TR6 . i often drove them to work on alternate days, an opportunity to compare two entirely opposing approaches to the same task, both enjoyable in their own way, but if i had a choice to relive one - snr Romeo would get my vote every time.
I've done a lot of stupid things in my 83 years. Near the top is selling my 1974 Alfa 2000GTV. My favorite of 7 ALFAs. Great to hear that sound. Nothing quite like it. I remember cruising with windows open playing Rachmaninoff's 2nd piano concerto on the stero---what a combination. Thanks to Harry's Garage for bringing it back to memory.

Giugiario's GTV 2000 one of the best looking cars ever, even more impressive because it's so small, well proportioned, and has great style. My primary school teacher, in her 60s style beehive hair, had a red one, back in 1971.
Fantastic car and fantastic video Harry. GTA's and GTV's are awesome little high revving wonders! A 17k mile car? Unheard of! If you put another 17k miles on it you'd still have a "low mileage" car! So I hope you drive it often and enjoy every moment.
My father denied my purchase of a similar, dark blue model. I've never forgotten that car.

It was my brother-in-law‘s car, and I nearly piled it up, spinning it out, with him in it, to within less than a foot of a concrete bridge abutment. Needless to say, I never drove it again!😆

Great video Harry of a beautiful car. I have always absolutely loved these. Everywhere you look it's just gorgeous - exterior, interior, under the bonnet. I remember as a kid in the mid to late 70s there was one that used to drop off and collect one of the other kids at school. That one was silver with a black vinyl roof and pretty sure it was the 2 litre. It looked pretty special back then and still does to me today. Such a shame most 'melted' in the rain! You did well tracking down such an immaculate one.
They are such fun cars. I’ve had my 1972 2000 GTV for 8 years and just love driving it. Great review too.

I was 18 when my Dad bought a 1600 Spyder. My gambit was to wash it frequently, enabling the decimation of the several muscle cars on twisty Ontario back roads.
I got the 2000 gt veloce (actual name) as first car at 19, I only crashed it a bit (not needing to tow it) twice, in 30 years. It's not the most dangerous car in existence, it is the second most dangerous car in existence after the 1970s fiat 500L. The alfa is a coffin in wet conditions, the fiat is a coffin fullstop.

Bought one in 1994 when I was 21. Didn't crash it but it was my daily driver and after time the repair costs were going to send me bust. Sold it after a year - but what a year.

Another one of your videos that I notice I'm smiling at .I was an alfa mechanic when the Alfetta and Sud were launched and we were sent on training courses.One was for the gearboxes on these nicer cars.I remember the tutor rattling off details of metallurgy, machining and manufacturing as he sang the praises of the gearbox with informed comparisons with lesser components.
We occasionally got these Milan Alfas (as distinct from the Sud (South of Italy factory)) in for service.Test driving was a perk of the job.

Brings back fond memories of one I had. 43000 miles when I got it. It was modified slightly with Harvey Bayley handling kit. Loved it so much. Still miss it at times, i.e. now!
Hi Harry, mum had two of these ,. The 1600 junior we went to Antibes in for our summer holidays in the 1970’s.A bit small for a family car. In the back at 100 mph with a webasto roof open was very noisy. Dad raced every one he could,, a real boy racer in those days. Thanks for the film. Best wishes mark

I remember a fantastic article on a British car magazine that emphasized all the features of the car except the driving setting, which was "for a strange mankind, with short legs and long arms"... haha! just the guide with outstretched arms that we Italians liked at those times!

Mu opinion 156 is the most Bella, up to this very day, it's still, as it came from the factory last week!

I loved with one of these for a few years. Some battles. Some casualties. No power. No grip. No brakes. But, like 911s, that feeling that you were on two wheels. Love it.

How are you getting on with it?
@@charlesjackman143 Hi Charles, its back on the road all warranted and registered. It starts, stops, and goes pretty well. I had quite a bit of patch welding done in the usual spots in the floor etc, with some structural repairs to A-pillar. The re-paint is about 8/10. New exhaust, all new rubbers, trim metal polished, new lights and badges, and a re-trim interior. The engine hasn't ever been touched but has minimal leaks and compression seems ok. I think next step is suspension and brakes. I've only replaced heavily worn bushes and the brake master...engine can wait until later when my bank balance has recovered!

One of the most beautifull sportcars ever and one of the most beautifull Alfa Romeo's. I owned the same one in 1995 and in the same color, but it was from 1978 and intended for export to the USA (so extra lights and special bumpers), but it never came to the USA. I traded it in a year later for a new Alfa because I hardly used it and I still feel that i should have kept it, prices are now 4 times as high if they are in good condition.
I had one of these in South Africa. I inherited it from my mom when her back went out and she needed a car with lighter steering. The 2l engine is an absolute joy. I found the handling very good despite the 165 width tires. It out-handled almost anything in those days. It rusted to bits, but the engine and gearbox were reliable for the life of the car. Fuel consumption was heavy, but most economical cruising at 140 km/h. I agree with everything Harry says in this review, based on my experience with the model. Brilliant review! Thanks for posting.

I’ve had two Bertone 2000GTVs and still have the second one of which I’m only the second owner. I bought them both in the early 80s when they were reasonably good value and now they are gaining in value as they become more appreciated. That silver one is gorgeous for sure but those brake servos are never original. They have been replaced I’ll bet. For a few years I used my current Alfa as daily transport but now it does seem very old fashioned if still great fun to drive.

beautiful car and the specs were fantastic back in the day, full aluminium engine with hemispheric combustion chambers, 5 speed gearbox and disc brakes all around. Thats why the price was double the Capri..
Back in the 1970s when I was a student, my mother had a white GTV2000 and I had a red GT 1600 Junior. No speed traps or cameras in those days and I can confirm that they were both 100mph cruisers! I just googled the reg no of my Alfa and was delighted to find that it is still taxed so someone is still enjoying it.
I owned an 1984 spider that I bought new for my third wedding anniversary, but my favorite was my sister-in-law's 1969 1750. The Bertone body was beautiful and great fun to drive. These cars were pretty quick especially between 2nd and 3rd gear. True classics.

Ah What memories!. I bought a new metallic blue / tan leatherette one in 1974 and honestly believe that it was the best car I have ever owned. I foolishly traded it in for an Alfetta - big mistake!!

When the Alfetta Gt came outfit was a young guy and naked myself why Alfa radically changed an almost perfect low car with sucha perfect design fir a taller one with a .ore conventional design

Enjoyed the video. I've had my 1750GTV for nearly 30 years and it's one of the best all-round classics you can imagine. I've done hundreds of different motoring events and from track days and autosolos to tours and driven it across countries. You can fit in plenty of luggage for travelling and it just makes me smile every time I drive it. Been very reliable too! Don't get caught up in the modification hype, the closer they are to standard the better they generally are. I've been there and done that!

Carburetors, not much muffling, and chrome steel on one side, the pinnacle of experimentation from designers on the other.

Absolutely glorious Alfa Romeo - visceral and alive!
That's the year I left school at 16. And by the time I was looking to progress from bikes to cars, you say Harry, these Alfas were altered rotting around the sills and wheel arches, expensive to insure and find parts for. So I got a Vauxhall Viva B, then a C. Why? Because they were big enough inside, cheap and the front suspension struts weren't prone to popping through the wheel arches - as the Escorts' were. I also had a lot of fun working on the engines, although they didn't let me down. Those downdraft Zenith carbs were complicated but efficient. I'm delighted someone chose to preserve one of these though. Their shape alone evokes the period beautifully. Thank you for sharing. I see period TV and film work in her future.
Back in the day I used to work for Alexander Hilliar of Haddenham (long since gone). They were run by a sort of mad professor type who's garage worked on the most eclectic range exotic of motor cars. I was just a wee lad back then (about 14, now 65) and among the racing Mini's, Rolls, Aston's. Jensen's etc was an Alfa 1750 GTV. It captivated me then and it captivates me now - Me and my mate used to work there on Sundays, mainly for pocket money but the boss often left us alone for hours. When the coast was clear we used to drive the cars up and down the garages really long driveway, one of which was this Alfa (apologies to the owner). The Alfa was one of the cars I liked most, it's something about the delicate lines, that angled exhaust tip and the hint of Italian individuality. I have never got to own one and sadly time is running out - it was nice to see this video and enjoy the ride - thanks. By the way, those racing Mini's had a Lotus Twin Cam machined onto a BMC transverse gearbox, everything was titanium and they would rev to 11000 rpm, I would like one of those as well :-)
