The advisors wanted him to launch a first strike against Russia, with one general famously stating, "Mr. President, if after a nuclear war there is one American left alive and no Russians, we win." JFK got up, walked out, and turned back to them at the door and said, "And we call ourselves the human race."

As lex said in the episode, I find it hard to imagine any contemporary president doing that. I could imagine some hesitating or being less trigger happy but if push comes to shove I see them all shoving.

There wouldn’t be six minutes. Subs just off the coast launching hypersonic missiles would give seconds of warning, if that. (In my opinion)
There's also a hesitancy to be the one to hit the alarm button, especially after what happened in Honolulu a few years back.
That's why the hole Cuban Crisis was a waste. A couple years later, or maybe at the time, nuke subs were already off the US coast.
We wouldn’t receive any warning because that would cause panic which would disrupt an evacuation.

launch on warning (LOW), military strategy that allows high-level commanders to launch a retaliatory nuclear-weapons strike against an opponent as soon as satellites and other warning sensors detect an incoming enemy missile.
I have a hard time believing this 6 mins of chaos, as its being portrayed, hasnt been simulated in every way, shape and form possible.
It has been simulated, wargamed, and studied for decades. Once someone pops a nuke, whether it be tactical or strategic, the overwhelming tendency in the "simulations" end up with major exchanges. It's a problem, a big one, and opens many avenues for accidents, incidents, mal actors, etc. to at worst case do something to start it. If you doubt anyone would deliberately start a nuclear war, check out the "Millenials Religious Sect" in Iran.
How do you know what you don't know has been simulated? Is a simulation run 5 years ago by other people that have moved on of any use?
As someone who’s familiar with government. They almost certainly have training exercises at a regular frequency and varying scope.
It's hard not to get anxious about these weapons. The power they hold is beyond anything else in human history.
Never before have we had the power to basically destroy every major city on the planet at the press of a button.

That prophecy is certainly clear in today's world and a very real threat.
In fact another prophecy in Matt 24:22 says," If those days were not shortened, no flesh would be saved".

Another issue with having a potential commander refuse orders to launch from the president is that if your enemies know this they have an incentive to conduct a first strike. You need to convince the enemy that any strike will be retaliated against, no questions asked.
Lex, having had some experience with US nuclear strategy and with respect to your guest’s apparent view on that strategy. The following questions come to mind: 1. Is it not more important to ask if we can LOSE a nuclear war rather than whether we can win one? 2. How often, and when most recently, did the President participate in a full scale exercise of the nuclear decision process? 3. Do you really believe that any military officer, STRATCOM Commander or otherwise, should choose to not obey the President’s order to launch a retaliatory nuclear strike? If so, should that same officer also “surrender” to Russia, China or whatever other country launched a first strike against the US? 4. Does you guest have a better process she can describe what our nuclear strategy should be?
No one is launching a first strike. People are so mis informed on this issue now days. Short range tactical is the modern problem. Not long range.
Most people think Nuclear war is a total win, but in reality there is no winner in a nuclear war besides a bragging right. In a war, each side wants to gain population or land or infrastructure, when there aint nothing left after the war, there is no reason to start one in the first place.

There is no game theory, no government, sponsored military exercises or wargames that don’t result in a full exchange of strategic nuclear weapons, basically emptying the stockpile after the first use of a tactical weapon in any theater of war. The tit for tat escalation results in strategic global thermal nuclear war every single time.

You get to the point where you are under attack, you don't have much time for discussion of strategy. At most, you decide on a prepared plan and give the order.

Exactly, just having a couple new major nuclear foes than we did 3 years ago, increases our chances of annihilation by one or two orders of magnitude. We no longer have the time to take the position that it is probably an error, so let's check to see if it is. We fooled around and found out that our foes do have the resolve to develop hypersonics and then we dared them to field those weapons. In 2024, all we have is oh geez, better take out the other half of the world because our half is gone too.

One reason we can't get good pres candidates is the way they're treated now. Any minor moral stumble or misdemeanor is magnified by the other side and magnified, they are constantly harassed and persecuted by the press, their family is also harassed

I've also thought that this is a huge problem. Someone would have to decide when they are 12 years old that they want to become a politician and then live perfectly to that. Completely unattainable.

This is not the complete question. The part they miss is "who is responsible for setting the stage for a nuclear event, whether it is an intentional strike/counter-strike, OR error/accident?"
Just the idea that all the pieces are in place for using a nuclear weapon... only needing an event or decision to trigger it... is irrational. "Oops", or "I'm sorry" mean nothing.
We have devolved as a species that this is possible.

The US satellites in orbit have almost caused an accidental launch once. But no mention of that because she is "unbiased"... Right. Sure.
On the subject of paranoid leaders, I find her statements so one-sided. She says this as though Nato is some peaceful organization that just wants to put massive weapons systems and troops closer to Russia year after year, to foster peaceful relations. Just another worthless communist cow.
It has to be activated first. The system isn’t just left on.
It isn't possible. There is still a analog component to any intercontinental missile launch.
No one was asking you to make the decision. The decision has been made for you- now we rely on you to defend.
This attitude actually undermines deterrence because it signals to our enemies that we might not hit back, hoping they will quit.
1 kind of person makes strat commander: someone who's made that their military career goal. I could see a dove making that their goal specifically to be the guy there so as to not launch. But then the officer next to them probably shoots them so idk.

6min is just a reaction time to put into practice what should already have been defined as part of the Nuclear Doctrine (which should detail processes and targets and type of response).

Ultimately, our fate depends on our willingness to not push one maniac to his limit. We don't have a clue what his limit even is, yet we keep poking him in the eye.
You should interview Moran Cerf on this topic! He has been working with the pope, homeland security that they are trying to change how the choice is made
For the people living in fear of nuclear war - remember that the end of the human race can happen in many other ways, some of which are even scarier. There are many doomsday scenarios; like the world's largest volcano eruption, AI, collision with an extraterrestrial object, our own Sun, etc. So many other things can end all life as we know it suddenly and without warning, besides nuclear war. It's simply sadder if we destroy ourselves instead of the reason being something external.
On an individual level, you can die today from thousands of random causes. So it's just too much to even think about, and you shouldn't. There are so many things to fear, that if you think about them, you will never truly live.
The moral of the story is to accept all of these things beyond your control and that you can do nothing about them. Be conscious of your mortality and that this life will one day end, for that is the ultimate truth of your existence. You can't argue with it, only pretend that it's not true or procrastinate your understanding of it.
What follows from this understanding is, a lot of irrelevant bullshit that you think about will go away and you will focus on the things in life that truly matter, because you realize there's no time for bullshit. There's no time to live in fear. Treasure each moment, live truly and accept your death when it comes - there is nothing else you can do even if you wanted to. You've heard that a human life is a story? Just like a story, it's not the beginning or end that matters, that makes it a story, it's the inbetween.
Fear, no for all the reasons you express... but educated and able to vote for people that are in power to appreciate the responsibility... required in my opinion.

The most destabilizing weapon of war that we have currently, is the ground based siloed intercontinental ballistic missiles. Those cannot be recalled, and their positions are well-known and easily eliminated by an enemy. The entire problem with nuclear war is launch on warning because of the “use it, or lose it” catch-22 that six minute decision making window Is entirely dependent upon. The Air Force wants to replace the Minuteman III with something new that will be just as vulnerable and not add a single minute to the short window of decision-making when it comes to actually fighting nuclear war. You could add days weeks and even prevent an all out exchange without a launch on warning Mandate.

"Launch on warning" became the practice *because* the land-based forces are vulnerable. When I was first in the nuclear forces and the (then Soviet) missiles were so inaccurate we planned to absorb a first strike knowing we'd still have a large portion of the force intact for counterstrikes, and maybe diplomacy to have a chance. These days the opposition's missiles are more accurate and there are more of them. We are also much weaker now, with far fewer strategic weapons. It's a paradox that as we wound-down the numbers of weapons those remaining became more valuable. Now we can't afford to ignore any threats, so "launch on warning" is the only way.

The problem with a widespread nuclear war is not whether it can be fought and won, but that nuclear ammunition runs out long before the war. This is not a war of conquest, but one of weakening or making the enemy unviable. We have never had the capacity to destroy humanity, but with much less than a widespread nuclear war we can destroy current civilizations and the entire structure of comfort and power, of cheap and quality goods...
For this reason, and not because of the deaths, there is no political enthusiasm for a widespread conventional or nuclear war. But such a war is inevitable, like a large asteroid or volcanism.

The launch codes and launch command to ignite a nuclear weapon is ordered to be launched every training cycle sometimes every week so as somebody who holds the keys to the nuclear launch path, you would not know if it was an actual launch or just a training mission so you can’tlogically deny the order to launch the nuclear missiles because you don’t know if it’s for real or if it’s just a trading mission
But with that being said, the Soviet union actually gave the order one day to nuke the United States, and it got all the way down to the rank-and-file keyholder, and the submarine just off the coast of Florida, and he refused to launch the nuclear missiles saving mankind
It wasn’t an order to nuke the US but to use nuclear equipped torpedoes in self-defense. The sub in question was being depth-charged by a U.S. Navy destroyer.
Um nope - practice messages are apparent in the first few seconds. And that Soviet incident you refer-to concerned an officer in one of the C&C Centers inside Russia, and an inaccurate radar indication of a massive missile launch coming over the Pole. An "out of the blue" situation which was the first strong hint that something was wrong. Yes, that officer is a hero. No, the Soviet leadership never did order a nuclear attack.
Also, didn’t a study once estimate that like 1/3 of the technicians at the missile stations would refuse to turn the launch keys? Makes you wonder if even more than that would refuse in a real time situation.
If nukes were sent at us first there would be no one that wouldn’t return fire. This logic only applies to a first strike scenario

No such study in real life. I was one of them. Hear me on this: We *would* launch, no question. And I was then - and now - as far away from a "war hawk" as it's possible to get, but knowing what was about to rain down on the heads of everyone I knew and loved just strengthened my determination to do my duty. No "war hawks" in the silos, by the way. We made sure of it. Those types are too unstable and are never allowed around nuclear weapons.

A Russian man responsible for the actual launching disobeyed orders to fire on the United States. Their radar thought a flock of birds was a nuke. He saved humanity.
Can I ask you what is the point of a retaliatory strike? I mean you would never see or ever be aware of the impact of the strike. It's kind of pointless to launch a retaliatory strike since it would bring absolutely no benefit to you.

You don't feel the punch that the bully receives but it stops you from possibly getting pounded more without mercy. If you just sit there and take it, you might lose your life. A retaliatory strike isn't just for retribution, it's defensive in nature.

2. The idea that a retaliatory strike is pointless... imagine the day after America is a victim of a nuclear attack and fails to retaliate. Vladimir Putin, Kim Jong Un, the Ayatollahs, Xi Jinping. Imagine your future where these are the new masters of the world's destiny.
3. The projection of resolve prevents that you do not have to answer question 1 and question 2. That is the nature of deterrence.
First it acts as a deterrence if the other side knows you'll respond in kind. Second, the first attack may just be a few missiles so a responding strike neutralizes any further attacks.
I imagine the commander would always press that button bc their orders would come with the briefing that a country already used them first, so at that point youll get confirmation that your home is about to be destroyed so letting the attacking nation live while you die will never enter the mind of a human who follows orders enough to be in such a position

I really appreciate the author's emphasis on moral leadership. It would be a big breath of fresh air to have leaders who could be trusted to do the right thing for our nation and the world. We have seen the decline that occurs when lawmakers spend the majority of their time attacking each other and spinning the attacks into "making America great again". The loss of credibility and legacy is immediately apparent. The thought of entrusting an arsenal of nuclear weapons to our elected representatives in a world primed for larger conflict is disturbing.

@@nicolaerazvan5185 a nuke doesn’t automatically knock out communications. Just launching a warhead won’t take down the power grid. We’d have time to communicate and respond. Like they said 6 minutes. the top military brass would know the situation. The person whose job it is to coordinate a retaliation would by definition have to know what was going on. Don’t get into the weeds and over complicate it. NORAD would call the pentagon, who would call the White House who would then give the order. The nuclear triad would be put on immediate standby as soon as nuclear launch was detected. The nukes don’t just magically go up. It takes a human to prepare the launch sequence. So people would again just by definition have to be informed of the situation. Nobody outside of military command would be giving information to the president and others whose job it is to “press the button”. So idk what you mean by “who’s feeding them information & who’s doing the feeding”. It’ll literally be the joint chiefs of staff just like every other military crisis
