  • Few episodes capture the mystique and tactical brilliance of the ninja better than the 1541 surprise attack on Kasagi Castle. This audacious raid, meticulously recorded by The Eishun Abbot of Tamon-In in his diary, "Tamon-In-Nikki," offers a rare, authentic glimpse into the covert operations of the ninja during the Sengoku period. This episode stands as a testament to the strategic prowess and effectiveness of these legendary operatives.
On December 23rd, 1541, Kasagi Castle, a formidable stronghold commanded by the minor daimyo Kizawa Nagamasa, fell victim to a clandestine assault. The attackers, identified in the diary as the Iga Shu-a term referring to ninja from the Iga and Koka regions-penetrated the castle's defenses under the cover of darkness. They managed to infiltrate the fortress, setting fire to the priests' quarters and capturing the first and second baileys. The outbuildings in the third bailey were also burned down, dealing a significant blow to the castle's defenses.
The raid, executed under the orders of Tsutsui Junsho, left Kizawa Nagamasa seriously wounded and ultimately led to the fall of Kasagi Castle. The precision and stealth of the operation underscore the ninja's unparalleled ability to execute high-risk missions with devastating efficiency.
