    Hey Guys, just a heads up here. I started this walk at 3pm with the intention of pitching at the top when the pine forest begins. I made 2 big mistakes. The first was not being patient enough to find a flat pitch. I ended up slightly on a slope. The second terrible mistake was only carrying 3.5L water for the first climb. I’m 6 ft 3 and 100kg, so by the time I reached the top of the first climb I only had 300ml left until the next morning. Due to dehydration I couldn’t sleep, so I panicked, packed up and night hiked to the next water point where I found a good pitch. It’s called area recreativo tamadabo. However as adrenaline was pumping, I didn’t sleep all night and ended up wanting to bail. I left this pitch at 06:30 and got to Artenara at 10:30ish. By this point I hd already booked myself a bungalow in maspalomas which was non refundable…. Duuuh (sleep exhaustion crazy behaviour)
    I am sadly going to miss the Artenara to San Bart stage, but hike from San Bart to maspalomas.
    If you are starting later in the afternoon, please make sure you make your first camping spot the rrecreational area.

      Hey Huw, sorry to hear that - the first climb does seem to last forever. Good to hear that you managed to get through safely though, and thanks for letting others know about your experience. I hope the rest of the trail goes well for you and you get to enjoy some good hiking! Take care out there!

    Hi Paul. Thanks for the video! Doing some research for possible GR131 at start of January. Is there a specific reason why you chose North to South? I’ve seen a few videos that do South to North to then easily catch ferry to Tenerife.

      Hiya, I was only doing the Gran Canaria section of the 131, and so flew directly in and out of the Airport without the need for the ferry.
      The map I'd downloaded (can't remember where from) also had the hike starting in the North, so I just went with that.

    Great video! What do you think was the coldest temp at night time

      Thanks! I doubt it got down to single figures, two of the nights I had the tent door open and was plenty warm enough.

    Hello, thank you for super detailed, informative video with the names of the cities, viewpoints etc.! It is really helpful and nice to watch! Also, I'm thinking about going there in November this year. What was the coldest temperature at night during your trip? Was there no problems with wildcamping, and also to buy supplies/food during the hike? Could you give me the exact spot, where you pitched your tent that day, the view is really nice (link to the google maps or sth)? :D

      Hi there, thanks for watching. I'm not sure of the exact temperatures but I don't think it went much below 10 degrees Celsius. I usually slept with the outer door of the tent open and was very comfortable. The only thing to bear in mind with buying food/supplies is that most shops close for the afternoon usually about 2pm and re-open about 6pm, though these times can vary. It's best to buy supplies in the mornings when you know shops will be open.
      Wild camping is against the law on the Island, so if you decide to do it I recommend pitching your tent late in a place that is out of the way, and leave early in the morning - make sure to leave no trace.
      I camped a little way past the 'Cuevas de Caballero', you can find them on Google maps. The forest there gave a bit of cover, there were some nice flat spots, and the view was great.
      Hope you have a great experience if you decide to go!

    Hey!! Do you think it’d be too cold in January to do this?

    • @PaulandaPack
      @PaulandaPack  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, January is a good time to hike there. Daytime temps should be great for hiking. Nights could be a little cool but by no means uncomfortably cold. Bear in mind sunrise will be about 8am and sunset about 6.30pm at that time of year.
