- I go to Vienna to attend the European Geosciences Union (EGU) 2016 General Meeting and present my PhD research on stratosphere-troposphere coupling!
Fan favourite Tom also gave a talk, and this video covers our four days at one of the biggest scientific conferences in the world. Things go a bit pear-shaped, and as well as giving a talk and sitting on panels on social media use in academia and film making for science communication, I also had to present a poster. One which I didn't make...
I won't be uploading my talk (before people ask!) because there are unpublished results in it that I don't want all over the internet. Also the talk was for a very specialised audience and frankly you'd need a lot of specialised knowledge that none of you have to make much sense of it :P Never fear though, I will be uploading bits of science every month in my PhD watch series!

12:01 "We just saw posters in Comic Sans, shame on you!" hahahaha that line got me really hard
AT A CONFERENCE I MEAN COME ON
hahaha man you made my day! I used to have profs making fun of comic sans and such. Good ol days --> now I transfered from uni (academic bachelor) to university college (professional bachelor) (Belgian education system; kind of broken but yeah it's life ;-) ) Goodluck with your journey to get a PhD
Sounds like my prof :D he's using it for all presentations ... you'd get used to it. I'm doing Meteorology in Vienna.
Oh man goodluck and RIP eyes hahaha
I always get energy when I see your positivity about everything particularly the conferences.
Congratulations! Best of luck for your future PHD endeavours, I look forward to hearing more about it!
Norris here.
Gotta say, Simon, that I love this kind of vlogs in particular. Keep 'em coming, please!
Greetings from a fellow science student from Argentina!
I'm happy for this kind of video blogs. Very sound. And there are not bad words on it. Very interesting also. Congrats.
I want your commentary in my life.
Easily one of the best youtubers around! Keep up the good work man
Thank you so much
I'm always in aww of people who for some reason like science. you are really cool
Watching your videos affirms my desire to study for a PhD. You're the best, Simon! Thank you for doing what you do.
+Charlotte Grace aw, thank you!
Another wonderful video!
Great video Simon, really interesting.
Great video! It was awesome to get some tips from you in the outreach sessions.
+Willem Huiskamp thanks for coming! Glad at least some of my ramblings made sense
😂
Good old conference presentations.. always one who loves to hear the sound of his own voice
Thanks for introducing some interesting person to us during the video!
Loved this!!
Haha, that clip with you+beer at the poster presentation was amazing. Glad to hear the presentation went well. I'm presenting at a massive international Music Education conference in July and intend to vlog there too. You've set the standard high!
+Sarah Mawby best of luck! I can highly recommend a drink after giving a talk :P
Inspiring!
Congratulations , it would be great if you make a video about how someone can prepare for presentation , its quite difficult and stressful for unskilled one
you should write your entire thesis in comic sans😂
Oh my, I was at this conference :D and I think I saw our talk without knowing it was you ;D
Awesome!
so cute, I am expecting to attend EGU 2019
11:07 I was in the same room, listening the same presentation (about Rosetta) that you!
ahhaha.. This was fun and interesting to watch :)
Hi Simon what programming languages do you know.
off topic but which halls at exeter would you recommend if you are studying physics?
I LOVE YOU, OMG!
Well actually it was a Greek restaurant.
Hey please upload the talk of the esa guy! I'm really interested
Tom is so cute! Hello from Brazil!!
looks good, shame I know very little about physics
"shame on you #neverok" 😂😂 loved this video!
practise; my favorite word. Practice* As you know.
i will be attending EGU this year, 2023. I am currently in my 3rd year in PhD ( department of civil engneering) in an IIT in India. I was selected for travel support as well. I am too excited to be there
Hii Shreya. I am also planning to attend EGU 2023. I am from NIT Surat, Gujarat.
9:28 I had to rewatch it to make sure that wasn't Rowan Atkinson from the early 2000s!

you've mentioned before that you know quite a few people who have left oxford to become journalists- I'm aiming to study English and hopefully do journalism, so was wondering what you know about following that career path via Oxford? Love your videos! Ilana :D
+Ilana Pearce a good person to ask on twitter (say I sent you) is @tara_mulholland - I went to St Peter's with her. From what I've been told getting experience in the Oxford student press is key, and then network network network while you're there!
SimonOxfPhys will do- trying to get as much experience as possible, which is difficult during the build up to exams! Thanks for the advice and the insight into life at oxford- its somewhere that's interested me for a long time, especially since visiting last year. The oxvlogs and exam tips are all really helpful ☺
I thought behavior conferences were alcohol-fueled, but drinks during the poster session is on a different level.
I don't think it was a Mexican restaurant, the menus and everything were in Greek!
The name of this restaurant and its menu are Greek ;)
Where did Tom do his undergraduate degree? Did he do an integrated masters or has he moved for bachelors masters and PhD.
+MrP4RR0TT He did an integrated masters in maths, here at Exeter - so stayed on for his PhD
Im doing A levels Maths Further maths , bio and chem , is there any way to get into a physics degree without doing an extra year at a level? Is there any way to do a maths degree maybe then do a conversion course onto theoretical physics or something?
Thanks
IF you don't do Physics A Level or AS, how the fuck do you plan on doing in the future. If you are really dedicated, you could take a couple years to complete AS and A level Physics...but that's long.
Cheers for the helpful and kind advice
I want to learn physics for my undergrad…what programming language should I learn??
+Sana Kumar python is a great language to learn and has lots of tutorial resources online!
thumbs up for rock n roll??
was that debussy's la fille aux cheveux de lin at 10:05?
+kain Yep!
+SimonOxfPhys recently learned it on the piano, greetings from Germany!
09:03 Aha! I thought he meant water or something. Oh! LOL. :')
Lek dosen ku koyok ngende ndek kampus, gak muleh aku mas
Hey Simon,
Which camera do you have?
+Ace of Grades for this I used a Canon G7X, but I also shoot on a 5d mk II and a 600d
Awesome, thanks Simon! :D
In the description he said "i go to vienna" but in actually it is i went to vienna
Actually, either is grammatically correct :) Stop being such a self righteous ass hat :)
i am not all i am doing is improving his grammer : )
*grammar
Aminoff The Don Alright thanks
How much c++ do you know?
+Anandh Rajan none!
I live in vienna 😄
All of our handouts are in comic sans #ShameOnYou (no, not you)
(That was my sorry attempt at humour)
Tom!!!!!!!
Secundra Beasley Tom riddle?
I do not know Tom's last name. I just know his first name.
Secundra Beasley
Can you please speak in slower rate because i'm a stupid asean that hardly understand Britain slang
Siew Meng no
You can change the speed in video settings
Siew Meng by listening more to these kinda videos (with subtitles on if possible) would help immensely
I died when he started drinking booze xD
9.55 "...and I am really f***ed!*
i liked that you could present your supervisor work. No remorse if you mess up the explanation I guess :).
What Camera do you use?
Canon G7X mk I which is amazing!
SimonOxfPhys Yeah, looks great!
Dang it! I missed you. I should have been creepy and stand infront of the building until you came out.... JK! Still, it would have been cool to meet you :) #fangirl
+Sarah Willich you should have come and said hi! Next time :P
What grades did you get at A level?
+Takaya Hemley this was before A*s were available, but 4As and then an A* in my extended project which was part of a trial to feature the grade. I also got a pass in an open university module on planets and moons
+SimonOxfPhys Thank you for your quick reply!
+SimonOxfPhys would you advise 3 or 4 alevels?
At the end of the day unis only make offers based on 3 A levels so if you want to maximise your grades, stick with 3 A levels. If you want more flexibility with what courses you can apply to, I'd go for 4. If in doubt, I'd recommend 4!
STOP THE COMIC SANS SIMON
+Jacq haters gonna hate hate hate hate hate...
What happened to Matt Taylor was a absolutely shameful.
*DECEARING EGG!!*
