    I know of a few warranties (like Seagate) that do include data loss, as a separate wty.
    Though its important to note that in a lot of places a warranty cant isolate you from the consequences of negligence, which this clearly is.

    A PSU warranty will replace the PSU in the case that it dies. A PSU warranty will not replace the other parts that a dying PSU destroys. Thanks as always for making a more in-depth video to explain this idea.

      While this is true, in the vast majority of cases, a good quality modern PSU will shut down and not cause damage when it fails. I can't really fault the PSU manufacturer for this, for example if your video card kills the motherboard, it is not expected that the video card manufacturer replaces the motherboard nor all the labor to put in a new one and set up the OS/software again which is often worth more than the motherboard itself.

    Steve from GN reported on this story as well. EVGA had to change because of some regulations. The customer had backups of his 22TB. Also they settled the issue with the customer to a satisfactory result according to the customer.

      Thank you for the info on this! The thing about my story is not about this specific customer, but on the traps behind the long warrantied and the PSU pin out.

    i wish that everyone would use SuperFlowers' idea of a 'Universal Connector'. it's so good.
    one Connector for all Rails except the 24-pin.
    plug anything in anywhere, every single Connector is the same, only changes on the Termination end for what the Device needs.
    convincing everyone would be hard, but man, it's sooooooooo good. the BEST idea anyone has had for Power Supplies.
    i bought a Model with that, it's just too good.

    I know in the US EVGA has a good reputation for aftersale support but in Israel we don't have any representation by the brands so we don't deal with the brads, here if we have a problem we bring it back to the store that we bought it from and they deal with the importer of the brand and only the importer deals with the brand.
    I agree about the 10+ year warranty crap, it's just a marketing war.
    You are 100% correct that we need a pinout standard, I know about this crap so am always very careful not to mix cables but a standard would be very appreciated. Steve from GN talked about the need for standard for the pinout so maybe you guys can help each other, he knows some people, you might know a few other people that can help.

    And what exactly is Intel ,Corsair’s / Seasonic’s/Thermaltake’s etc etc supervisor ?
    It’s another thing for Intel to present their ATX guideline paper and another to force companies that Intel doesn’t own to follow those guidelines.
    Some PSU companies might be able to afford to make a workaround that Intel says ,but for others such workaround might be economically disastrous . *If Intel wants to play the role of the PSU-market supervisor ,then Intel should absorb the cost that each company will estimate it’s necessary for such changes to be made* .
    As for EVGA ,few years ago ,I also suffered hardware-loss in a work-PC while using EVGA G2 750(*this PSU had a faulty fan which wasn’t spinning ). That work-PC had such low-power requirements that I thought that with such a well-known brand PSU I wouldn’t worry for decades ,yet within 1 year I regretted installing that PSU since the PC was fried with no protection kick-in to prevent that.
    Seeing this incident in this video made me be very worried about the so called “safety features” that PSUs are equipped with( OCP/OPP/OTP/OVP etc etc). In both cases , mine and this user here in this video , none of those advertised tons of “safety features” kicked-in in order to prevent a faulty-PSU unit from damaging PC hardware , so here comes the real issue which is much larger than a PSU’s warranty :
    In a faulty-PSU unit ,none of these “safety-features” can kick-in to prevent this faulty-PSU from burning your expensive PC-hardware ? *are we supposed to wait and see which PC-part will burn first in order for something such as “short-circuit protection” or I don’t know what else to kick-in* … *later* ? 😱
    I hope that such inability to be unique only for EVGA ,and other major companies like Corsair to be able to handle things better than that ,hopefully … yes I’m looking at(*and trust) you *Jon* !!🙂

    Good video. Companies should be called out for bad practices. About warranty. I see it as trust of the company in their product. Who says i will find the original bill in 10 years. But it is nice that company believes their product is good for 10 years. I have a question about cables. What about cable extensions? They are all universal for all psus? As i understand they are plugged into original psu cables and then go into connectors on mobo and gpu etc.

      extensions go on the end that goes to the Mobo so if the cables are right the extensions can't be wrong but if the cables are wrong the extensions will be wrong too, extensions are just extensions not converters.

    F for the Guys drives. Man , that's really bad luck and one of the possible problems people warned about with modular cables for ages. Old Problem, cables can fit psu but are not compatible,. A Warning "hey this rev2, not compatible with rev1 cable, check your stuff" would be the minimum. But still a bad decision to make them pin compatible on the psu. A Company i worked for had a lot of those kind of oopsies, because people didn't think something is their job, people left, Knowledge never got transferred, Processes didn't exist or weren't followed. It's hard and you people really dedicated to their work and quality, or fool-proof processes to prevent such things.

    It's quite ridiculous, but yeah, don't re-use old PSU cables, unless you know for sure that you can. The cables are consumables. They could've standardized the connectors, but they should create a completely new design to avoid such issues. Although, as we saw with the new PCIe 5.0 connector, that has its own pitfalls. The old style is tried and tested for many years.
    As for warranties, they don't cover all possible damages, and you are fully at the mercy of the manufacturer in any case. If they don't feel like honoring it, you are out of luck. Still, I would in general suggest avoiding brands with short warranty, because clearly they don't trust their own products to last, and that can be a warning sign. For instance, I've seen quite a few AiOs that come with a 2 or 3 year warranty, and for something you put inside your computer than contains water, that is just unacceptable, if you as me. 5 years should be the minimum for critical parts such as AiOs and PSUs.

      Yeah, that make sense. Even myself refund my exploded PSU with the cables, hope it when came back to me didn't explode anymore. Here in my country, same brand sometimes have more than one distributors. So the brand does not implying the quality of the warranty, the distributors itself make their rules for claim defect products to the brand. So yeah, long warranty make worry free than short warranty.

      This isnt a wty matter - its outright negligence. But there are some warranties that do explicitly include data recovery attempts (ie Seagate)

      @@mycosys it's hard drive manufacturer so it makes sense. I'm not making the rules here.
      The more people understand how poor the warranty policy is, the more cautious they are about trusting the manufacturer with their data.

    man if only these connectors were like, standard, and had a regular, industry standard, and recognized pin out. That way something like this didn't happen.

      As Aris stated in the vid, the issue is the fact that only ONE side of the connector is standardized.
      About warranties, I rejoin you : they are anly as valid as the williingess of the brand to honor them. Because if they don't, what are you gonna do ? Sue them, and loose 10 years of your life to battle against a litteral floor of lawyers who's ONLY job will be to make the procedure as slow as possible, arguing about every coma, to drag you down ? Unless you're Elon Musk or Warren Buffet, no you won't.

      @@lamikal2515 yes, that was the joke that i was making, we have done ALL of the work required to standardize these connectors already, we just aren't doing it for ???? reasons. I guess.
      Although in the grand scheme of warranties, there are laws regarding them, so very blatant violations of the warranties should be pretty trivial, since it's up to legislative discretion in that regard, it's not like the company has a say in it lol.

      @@killingtimeitself Even if the infraction are blatant, there is still procedures to follow. And even in the case where the defendant is clearly in the wrong, the job of it's laywer is to argue about every little technicality, to delay the "innevitable", to the point where the plaintiff just straight up don't have the mean to defend himself anymore (by that I mean, to cover the cost of it's own lawyer). It's a game of attrition.

      @@lamikal2515 i mean yeah, outside of legislation that would be what happens, but if a company breaks warranty laws, and you can prove it, they're fucked, the government is siding with you. Simple as that.
      Don't sue for anything that isnt a law though, im sure that'll be a mess.
