Brilliant video! I'm used to working with planes through Sanda, Gracie Jiujitsu and Bujinkan Ninjutsu but have never had it broken down so concisely like this. We sort of learn and understand and feel them out but never analyse them as such. Thank you for sharing!
thanks for this feedback! yes a few others have pointed this out, even in this latest video (i thought I had fixed a lot since my last Lo vid). I'll try improve the pacing in the next one
Yep..."planes" is just a way to illustrate fundamental (and old) concept of takedowns....just like active posting, leg drags etc are not really "new". I just think many people focus on "kuzushi", but timing/tactics are big in takedowns not just planes/throw mechanics...the partners? Check out part 2 (and the blog post), where I go into a bit on tatics!
thank you! I think this plane concept makes the "intuitive" a bit easier to convey to the lay person. From then on the more complex strategies/nuances of take downs become a bit more logical. Glad you found it useful!
I absolutely love your presentation. The use of the CGA Judoka along with the clock and planar lines for your examples are priceless! I have been trying to figure out how to do that for explaining angles of take down attacks for wrestling, Beautiful work. I can't thank you enough for sharing this, I bow to you! = )
Great analysis in this and the Ronda Rousey clip. Both these players have stepped close to what Mifune was using. This analysis helps me to understand what I've been looking for in the four fundamental sweeps and puts better concepts under what I've been feeling.
Thanks for the support guys! Please let me have any feedback on how I can make the viewing experience better for future videos. The last round of comments was very helpful
Awesome videos. Have you thought about doing a breakdown video of Lucas Lepri? He has a great all around game. His style is very effective, nothing flashy, just great pressure and great side to side movement.
hihi yes, it is hard to encapsulate all the intricacies of judo into one short video, but in my opinion, things like kuzushi, tsurikomi, debana, happen "after" the moment you identify the plane, and that intuition on "when" to attack was what I was trying to convey vs "how"( kuzushi, tsuri, debana). A lot of what I try to do is to really convey concepts (ie active posting, why a guard works) rather than detailed instructionals. Yes pls we can always discuss more on my FB @ bjjscout! thanks!
a lot of throws ( like ippon) look like have cleaned a guy off his feet but really that's more the consequence of nailing the throw on the weak plane so maximal force is applied. Even in seoi nages (and all forward throws) you want to go against the weak plane
On throwing? so many good instructionals on youtube... but one thing you can't really find on youtube is "when" to throw though (ie footwork and timing). Maybe I might do that. Actually the most important thing about judo missing on youtube is the "how to train/develop" a throwset (ie the method elite judoka train). There are some specific things you need to do which I can never find explained online. Maybe I will cover that too later. But Rodolfo first!
well wrestling is different from judo, but you also want to push against the weak plane during the drive/penetration if you can. Thing is just once i have your legs in a single/double, there are variety of ways to finish the take down (besides just going against the weak plane)
I really enjoyed and appreciated your explanation of planes. They are a mathematical and intuitive way to represent what's going on, and very pedagogical as well. Really nice!
thanks! I have never seen the concept of planes used anywhere in videos/books so I wanted to put it out there, hopefully it's a useful concept to the community
but hell maybe its uki otoshi, who knows. Some people say rodolfo doesn't rotate fully in to avoid a back take, but then with morote it's not easy to get back taken (unlike ippon seoi nage), maybe one he will shed light on it in an interview or something
Great video!!! Im a bjj black belt and I think Marcelo Garcia is one of the best pound for pound bjj fighters ever, so can u guys make a video about Marcelo Garcia sweep game!!
what you go for and what you get might end up being different though, I think Rodolfo is going for a morote but execution issues sometimes means he doesn't get the full rotation, uki otoshi (at least the classical one which is almost like a akido wrist lock throw, and most drops like valley drop, side separation etc, except for taiotoshi) is very "iffy" to m as a usable throw at the elite level...because they don't make much body contact when fully executed, so when u "miss" u hardly "throw"
yep, u get it more or less, there is a "weak plane" (whenever ur hips and feet line up, not just diagonally)...once seeing it becomes your instinct, take down strategy will start to make more sense I think
Amazing video! Truly an in-depth well explained video! Many great examples and awesome choice of music! Great video! Thank you man for taking the time and effort to make this.
Terrific video! I really like Vieira's throwing game. He's actually using a seoi-otoshi, and sometimes it starts looking like uki-otoshi when he initiates the throw more from the side and doesn't get underneath his opponent. That does nothing to affect your analysis, but it does to help explain why his seoi-nage may be considered ugly. Kodokan Judo Throwing Techniques by Toshiro Daigo is a fantastic text for studying throws if you can find a copy. Looking forward to future videos!
true his double is pretty effective, like being hit by a truck...i think wrestling vids online already would cover it pretty much though, I would like to do something on buchecha at some point so who knows...
this is a great way to see the over exposure of the weakest defense i.e. goin with the flow.. in other words there is always a strong and a soft... if that makes any sense....
I've tried Morote and break posture but never finish the throw. Maybe try several attempts like he did against Xande or switch to different attack after opponent defends. I'm trying to be less of a guard puller. Your work and site is greatly appreciated
Rodolfo's "morote" does not rotate in like the classical morote because it is not morote seio nage (two handed back carry throw) - it is uki otoshi (floating drop). This is a very unusual attack and is used very infrequently in competition judo. It seems to work better in BJJ competition than in Judo, likely because of the the bent posture of most BJJ competitors.
That plain disappears once you go on all fours, but in doing so you sacrifice a lot for stability. Your back is exposed. Your shooting range is halfed since you can't make that long stride your throwing abilities are eliminated and your defence in halfed... You prevent being thrown but you at a lot more of a cost. Its almost like stats in a video game. You sacrifice a stat to focus on a different stat and over power it. Or you can have a well balanced weak character. Looking for a strong defence
BJJSCOUT, I really love your videos... here's my 2 cents: A lot of times you have text in the video while something important is happening. This way we can only either look at the movement, or read the text. This sometimes leads to missing one of them, as sometimes the fragments are pretty short. So then we have to go back and rewatch. Maybe you could add more textscreens in between, or freeze the image so we can first read the text and then see the action or something... Keep up the good work!
amazing, was initially disappointed it wasn't about the ground game but have now watched this one about 4 times! Still dont completely understand the planes despite your explanation though (im sure explanation is good its just my slow understanding ) , is it basically that you are weak diagonally but not left right or back and foward
xande has an online training website though, honestly i think he would do the best job of breaking himself down I think...i think if takedowns was 4 points there would be more incentive to do them tactically...right now, the 2 you get only to get swept and concede a 2 doesn't really make it attractive....
Best analysis ever. BJJScout you (or you guys) are absolutely amazing have have done wonders to promote grappling. So sad FLOGRAPPLING reported your instagram account. They were definitely jealous of you.
Immediately subscribed after watching this video! I've had the horrible habit of typically trying to attack my opponent's strong plane and getting my takedowns easily stuffed. This video really did a great job Illustrating such a basic but incredibly overlooked concept! Btw, What's the name of the first song? It's apparently 'Stand and Fight' but all I'm finding are short versions on youtube/itunes that aren't as long as the song in this video. Where can I find the extended version?
I have a question. If throwing on a strong plane is next to impossible, how does an ippon seoi nage work? Aren't you attacking the strong plane when you lift them up with your back?
One thing - My eyes are constantly searching the screen for text hich jumps around- if you can try to put the text in the same place each time (where possible) it will allow the viewer to concentrate his viewing on the red circles you present. I think it is important to draw the circles, arrows, highlight the visual you want us to see.
Your breakdowns are out of this world. Who are you and where do you train!??!!?! The knowledge and breakdowns of this Channel are unreal. Thanks
Brilliant video! I'm used to working with planes through Sanda, Gracie Jiujitsu and Bujinkan Ninjutsu but have never had it broken down so concisely like this. We sort of learn and understand and feel them out but never analyse them as such. Thank you for sharing!

i need more suggestions on music! thanks

this video is so well done thank you
cool thanks!
Denis what book was that? The judo book...
Wow. I knew Judo was all about throws but this video really highlights the concepts of the art.
Yep..."planes" is just a way to illustrate fundamental (and old) concept of takedowns....just like active posting, leg drags etc are not really "new". hey it's in the video description, just added that in, thanks. Great that you found it useful, check out my other videos and add me on twitter!
you have the best bjj videos on the interwebs. Great work!
thank you! I think this plane concept makes the "intuitive" a bit easier to convey to the lay person. From then on the more complex strategies/nuances of take downs become a bit more logical. Glad you found it useful!
Wow. Just wow. Another excellent video. Can't wait for the next one. Keep up the excellent work BJJScout!

I am a Judoka and I approve of this takedown/throw analysis
YES! Rodolfo is my favorite, so glad you decided to analyze him next.
Very nice breakdown of Judo throws and how they work.
WELL DONE! Tim Ferris would be proud!
a lot of throws ( like ippon) look like have cleaned a guy off his feet but really that's more the consequence of nailing the throw on the weak plane so maximal force is applied. Even in seoi nages (and all forward throws) you want to go against the weak plane
Always impressed on how I understand more after your vids... Thanks!

Keep doing whatever it is you're doing. If it takes time, fine. Your breakdowns are amazing.
amazing stuff man would be really stoked to see a breakdown of his passing game!
Might be the best video on youtube. Especially when watched with 0.5 playback speed.
Wow this opened my eyes, Been doing wrestling for 5 years to complement my jits, love the concept
This is an awesome primer to using judo strategy in grappling. Great stuff man

Excellent breakdown. His attacking style reminds me a lot of Jacare's Gi takedown game. Great stuff man!
I really enjoyed and appreciated your explanation of planes. They are a mathematical and intuitive way to represent what's going on, and very pedagogical as well. Really nice!
absolutely incredible video and study thank you
Amazing. I am really looking forward to the rest of the Rodolfo videos. These are game changers, thank you so much.
As a judo coach of 30 years new to bjj I thought this was a fantastic clip to show the use of judo in bjj.
thanks! I have never seen the concept of planes used anywhere in videos/books so I wanted to put it out there, hopefully it's a useful concept to the community
Excellent work you've done here. Thanks for the great insight you give about bjj and related arts (judo here.).
Was great to see judo at it's best I loved it
Continue com vídeos assim sempre. Sensacional. 👏👏👏👏👏
Great video The science of these takedowns is impressive.
Interesting, thanks! I suppose the same way the weak plane can be exposed through pressure, it can also be created through moving around legs. Thanks!
but hell maybe its uki otoshi, who knows. Some people say rodolfo doesn't rotate fully in to avoid a back take, but then with morote it's not easy to get back taken (unlike ippon seoi nage), maybe one he will shed light on it in an interview or something
Love this
Thanks for the amazing work🙏🏼
thanks, I liked making this one a lot more than my last frankly
Keep the vids coming.. Excellent break downs.
Great video!!! Im a bjj black belt and I think Marcelo Garcia is one of the best pound for pound bjj fighters ever, so can u guys make a video about Marcelo Garcia sweep game!!
All your videos are awesome and so informative. Thanks for sharing!

This was helpful. Definitely gonna put the thought in my judo game.
Fantastic video and explanations. Great work!

Amazing video! Truly an in-depth well explained video! Many great examples and awesome choice of music! Great video! Thank you man for taking the time and effort to make this.
Hi - chcck out Part 2. I try to go over a bit on when is the "right" timing to attack a morote. A lot of it is practice though, keep at it!
Terrific video! I really like Vieira's throwing game. Hi its called "Stand and FIght", search it on youtube!
Awesome! Greatly improved my stand up game.
thank you! keep watching my channel !
If you cover Rodolfos top game, consideration of his transitions from his take downs would be pretty cool. Great video.
excellent video. It's a real eye-opener. Thanks!
Huge fan, keep up the videos, best I've seen.
true his double is pretty effective, like being hit by a truck...i think wrestling vids online already would cover it pretty much though, I would like to do something on buchecha at some point so who knows...
TH-cam needs to add a "Love this shit" button....
awesome break down

Well done Keenan, well done...
ok, l just think that u share the videos with a different perspective, Its really pretty amazing to wacth it!
Amazing as always!
love the breakdowns! very insightful ! keep 'em coming!

Your great... you need to be paid for this.. its very high quality..
thanks!
Yes the new rules makes judo a bit "unrealistic" and more like a game/sport now. But the idea of planes can still be useful for BJJ-ers!
look at the video this guy made for us.... hes an angel.
thanks! Glad you liked it.
Hmm, try this "Stand and Fight- Epic Mixed AMV Fight" ?
BJJSCOUT, I really love your videos... here's my 2 cents: A lot of times you have text in the video while something important is happening. Great video, thank you very much
This is awesome!
I'm not that keen on doing guys with online training sites frankly. So much already online in MGonline though, don't think I could ever do it justice
Best analysis ever. BJJScout you (or you guys) are absolutely amazing have have done wonders to promote grappling. So sad FLOGRAPPLING reported your instagram account. They were definitely jealous of you.

Holy crap. The 15 second explaination starting at 4:57 is worth a couple of hours of drilling. Damn!
well, hopping does help once they manage to hook a leg, not many hopscotch around the mat...
Please make more videos. They are the damn best
I have a question. If throwing on a strong plane is next to impossible, how does an ippon seoi nage work? Aren't you attacking the strong plane when you lift them up with your back?

A great instructional. Have to admit i liked the original music
How can the concept of planes be applied to techniques such as the double leg takedown?
Love it! Thanks!
hmm , thanks for watching in any case
Man this vids are the best
Great work again ! ossss
