I have only recently found your channel and subscribed but I find the content fascinating. Sometimes I'm a bit bamboozled by the technical language but I find the more I listen to the different videos on your channel, the more I find I understand the next. I guess that's just simple learning. I think you have an excellent manner about you and you always try to cover as much as possible, explaining everything without straying far from the main topic. I'm a wee bit older than you but I think I'm going to make my first leap into buying a NAS in the shape of a Synology 2 bay (I think it's the 244+) with a coupe of 8Tb Ironwolf drives. I like the idea of having music and video easily to hand with a bit of data for work and photos but live in fear of it disappearing due to component failure, so I will probably have the 2nd bay mirroring the first. I will definitely be using your guides to set it all up though, so thank you so much for making these videos.
I continue to watch these despite being stuck in my ways and knowing ill never use them lol. All of my end points I would watch my content on are hooked up to media/gaming PCs. I just pin and browse the media folder with regular old file explorer. I remember i tried plex once and it was able to recognize about a quarter of my shows even with trying to clean up the titles and file structure.
Hi can you help me! how can i take the URL of an internet radio station and put it into the file structure of a NAS so that i can play it through a network player. i remember doing it once through some software on my synology but now cant work it out.
As always, great overview Rob. The only (as U know), with Video station is it's lack of support for DTS & even EAC 5.1 formats. The user must use 3rd party SF & transcode all their flix. This is a HUGE problem. Synology should just charge us a fee for licensing if they don't want to. G'day mate! 👍👍👍👍👍
Pretty much a deal breaker. Not happy with the direction Synology has taken with most of their software. I find when it comes right down to it that SMB file sharing is the way to go on Synology side and using devices that support frontends like KODI, Infuse, Skybox, etc. to watch the content.
still trying to decide which route to go -- UGREEN qnap terramaster asustor .... not a fan of synology since they brick your hdd's if you don't use their drives... so what is the best option today? Use: photo and video and data backups... I know a NAS is not a backup - but its just one more place I want to stash all of my hdd data...
They do what if u dont use their HDD (& SSD)? U can use Western Digital & Seagate, Samsung SSD without a problem. Synology + Seagate is quite a often used combo, if not most used.
Can you make a video on how to use raspberry pie with Synology so as to stream media to a Tesla and also use pi to store dashcam and sentry clips on Tesla and automatically upload the clips on the nas
My best advice, get a 1U enclosure and a desktop network rack (2post) from startech for example. Buy a n100 mini itx mobo, and install ram etc accordingly. Then use the n100 inside a 1u enclosure in a desktop rack as Plex server, and the rack station rs422+ as a nas. So, you can access your storage in the network and run the plex transcoding on the n100 1u enclosure. Maybe add a tp link switch inside the rack. For about 400 for the n100 in the enclosure, 700 for the rack station and 75 for the desktop rack (network) and 75 for the network switch, all excluding storage. Then you only need to buy storage. Get an nvme for the n100 and hdd for the nas. If you whish to speed up your NAS responsiveness, you could go with 3x HDD and the first slot a SSD Sata, like a mx500? What are you planning on doing with it?
In times of Spotify, Netflix etc. I've yet to find anyone that explains to me for what I need this as non video editor. People talk so highly about an to me useless software.

if you buy a synology nas with at least a x86 processor, your raspberry pi will be slower, and not transcoding.
What Media are u planning on streaming? Why not [for example] Spotify & Netflix?
