On board the Titanic, brave German 1st Officer Petersen (Hans Nielsen) struggles to convince his self-important British superiors not to overexert the ship's engines.

Just a reminder that I always link my sources in the description of the video so if you want to watch the original unedited versions, not upscaled and not in colour, they have not been destroyed, they are linked people can definitely choose to watch the original unaltered versions of anything I make, even personally I often don't like colourisation, but some do, and if you don't, the original black and white version is in the description.
For this new release, I am going to post the 4k Colourised and in its original Black and White. so there's more options there and if people still prefer the original source then that is absolutely fine, you can find that video linked in the description.

That moment when the officers realize what has happened and then the order: "Stop Engine!"...the music, the pointer that goes to stop...and you know now the beginning of the end begins. Goosebumps always at the scene...😢 not seen since my childhood. Only now learn that it was originally intended as propaganda. But I still see this film as part of the art of film. In the film, no Nazi flags are held up or the like nicely talked about. The basic message is that the rich gambled with human lives for profit and that is reality. Even if some details were changed, the other Titanic films dealt with details in a similar way. these aren't documentaries. Anyone who comes across the aspect of propaganda should even consider one thing, this representation by sites that are above others in things like morality still exists, it's just called differently. presenting yourself better has never changed. one should see this film from a purely cinematic point of view and not as a means of propaganda.what always makes me doubt is the aspect that such tragedies are taken for entertainment films at all. somehow always the thought what do the survivors say when they see how people see it as pure entertainment and that the real thing happened. I know it's already too far-fetched, but sometimes there is a small aftertaste

For instance, the script made the British look foolish; it was pointed out how much money was spent and lost even before the Titanic sailed.

This is shaping up to be a pretty good titanic movie, thanks for the uploads, I've been watching through your catalogue.
One thing I always find interesting about German, is how, to my American ears, it can go from being totally incomprehensible, to a sentence that almost sounds English (I'm aware English is a Germanic language and they share the same roots).
Like at 7:07, the subtitle is "The richest man on board", and the German is basically the same "da riechsster man on board" (Sorry, for the spelling, I'm not super familiar with German, and just spelled what I heard phonetically). I know its totally unrelated to the movie, I just find it interesting.

rich and reich (realm) are related words. The ric in English bishopric is also. In centuries past rich people owned plenty of land, so it implied you were a land owner. The Spanish 'rico hombre' means rich man in the sense of owning land. The name America came from the Italian name Amerigo which came from the Germanic Emerich which also means landed wealth.

  • @colonelsmith7757

I find it particularly interesting that the average man here, British or German, is portrayed as honourable, whereas it is those with power that are condemned, even if they happen to be British, because the Titanic was a British-owned ship after all.
Ismay's culpability cannot and shouldn't be ignored, and while Smith too was an honourable man who went down with his ship, it is indeed the case that, as the judge says in the end scene, that it is the Captain who holds sole command and responibility over the ship and the souls on board.
To that extent, I do not understand why people want to term this as not much more than a "propaganda" film when it is indeed a fact that the company was going under, and that its President Ismay wished to save it by breaking new ocean-crossing records and therefore not leaving enough time for icebergs to be spotted and avoived, especially on a dark, Moonless night as April 14th, 1912.
The Titanic was only half-full, yet the lifeboats were not enough to save even 1/3 of those on board. White Star started the "meme" that the ship was unsinkable to bolster its image and remain afloat, ironically enough while its pride of the fleet was to go under, eventually dragging it down alongside with it.
It was indeed little more than profiteering that doomed the ship, and that is the whole point of the film, which from that perspective could have easily been produced by almost any regime under any direction.
The story of the Titanic is tragic because its sinking could have easily been avoided.

The panic and lifeboats scenes; when everything is breaking and water seeping in is where this movie shines.
Germans know how to express and capture pessimism and disaster well.
Every Titanic movie i watch i always see the reflection of the creator in it and how they thought it went down. Thats usually where the errors are, however if you look in between the lines of the directors creation you will find fragments of the truth of the titanic as well. I'm sorry but I find this version of the sinking of the Titanic absolutely ridiculous. Yes I know it was a long time ago but it just looks tacky. I still think that A Night to Remember is probably the best version ever made. Yes we know that the first funnel collapses forward not the fourth but this movie was nearly never made. They didn't have the budget or the sets for some of the scenes needed. The radio scenes are brilliantly done on the Carpathia and Titanic to show the emotional desperation of radio operator Cottom and Captain Rostron trying to get as much steam as possible to go faster even though this put his engines and ship at great risk. This dramatic part was never done on James Camerons version. A lot less Jack and Rose and attention to timelines and details would've made Camerons version much more enjoyable. Michael Goodliffe played Thomas Andrews brilliantly as did Laurence Naismith as Captain Smith and Kenneth More as Charles Lightoller was the stand out role here. Tucker Maguire as Molly Brown was brilliant on this while Kathy Bates on Camerons version was just wrong in the lifeboat scene. She didn't threaten to throw Hitchens overboard like Tucker Maguire did. Kathy Bates was far too passive in her role. One of Michael Goodliffe stand out roles was the way he delivered the news to Captain Smith in his stateroom. Smith says "well what's the answer? and he says She's going to sink captain." He then explained how much damage was done and that the ship had 2 hours before she sank. It's a heart breaking role here and the delivery of the lines at that part of the movie was flawless. I'd heard there was a German version made but it was totally amateurish. I have one last gripe. I have no problem with Black and White movies being digitally cleaned up with Dolby Digital sound tracks. I do have a problem with colourising them. It looks so bad on A Night to Remember, you can see where the colour rotoscoping was not keeping up with the movements of the actors. Anyway. If you have anything to add, please feel free.
