A Night to Remember is a 1958 British docudrama film based on the eponymous 1955 book by Walter Lord. The film and book recount the final night of RMS Titanic, which on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic and then sank in the early morning hours of Monday, 15 April 1912. Adapted by Eric Ambler and directed by Roy Ward Baker, the film stars Kenneth More as the ship's Second Officer Charles Lightoller and features Michael Goodliffe, Laurence Naismith, Kenneth Griffith, David McCallum and Tucker McGuire. It was filmed in the United Kingdom and tells the story of the sinking, portraying the main incidents and players in a documentary-style fashion with considerable attention to detail. The production team, supervised by producer William MacQuitty (who saw the original ship launched) used blueprints of the ship to create authentic sets, while Fourth Officer Joseph Boxhall and ex-Cunard Commodore Harry Grattidge worked as technical advisors on the film. Its estimated budget of up to £600,000 (£13.1 million adjusted for inflation [2019]) was exceptional and made it the most expensive film ever made in Britain up to that time.
The World Premiere was on Thursday, 3 July 1958, at the Odeon Leicester Square. Titanic survivor Elizabeth Dowdell attended the American premiere in New York on Tuesday 16 December 1958. The film disappointed at the box office. However, it received critical acclaim and won the 1959 "Samuel Goldwyn International Award" for the UK at the Golden Globe Awards.The film has been described as "the definitive cinematic telling of the story." Among the many films about the Titanic, A Night to Remember is regarded highly by Titanic historians and survivors for its accuracy, despite its modest production values, compared with the Oscar-winning film Titanic (1997).

They didn't have all the CGI that we have today but they still managed to make this masterpiece. Fantastic film

Yes, but they DID use the best special effects that were available at the time the picture was made. It’s such a shame that the film has been molested so disgustingly with cheap colorization. I’m not opposed to colorizing, but for a film that was the best of its time it seems inconceivable that someone would use the absolute worst possible method to colorize it. It seems like the person or persons responsible must hate this movie.
Hands down, this is the best movie made to date on the Titanic.

I am watching this tonight on the 112th anniversary of her sinking. I don't think there will ever be a "perfect" Titanic movie. But this is close in my book. I am crying as I watch. The least we can do is remember the humanity of these souls. 😢 Godspeed Titanic and her crew. You stand relieved of your duties.

Kenneth More gave an interview (think you can find it on TH-cam) where he talks about this film. He said that when it was filmed there were still quite a number of Titanic survivors alive and some came to visit the film set. As the film crew were tilting the stage the wood started to make loud groaning sounds. One of the survivors went white as a sheet. The film crew man told her not to worry as they would edit that sound out in the actual film by moving the stage and then filming. She replied that the sound was exactly what she had heard on the night of the sinking. They kept the sound in the film. This film is by far the best film of that tragic event.
@educatednegro5897 Yeah there's a large amount of looking back with rose-tinted glasses here. It's a great film, and while clearly not as good as 1997's Titanic, it inspired many of the scenes we see in that movie.

@@damo85I think people’s main problem with the 1997 Titanic film is the element of the romance between Jack and Rose. I never minded it, because while it was obvious typical Hollywood fluff, I believe it did help punctuate the tragedy that was the Titanic. Two lovers torn apart by the sinking. It kind of mirrors the countless families that were torn apart by the sinking in real life.
The little kid that was left behind and comforted by the stranger really moved me. God bless their souls!

This film has aged like a fine wine. Some inaccuracies, but still way ahead of it’s time. No CGI nonsense.
Cameron’s Titanic had very little CGI. Remember he created a full size ship mock-up 😊
But he used CGI to make the model fit in better, as well as with the panning shots of the ship.
Even with a gargantuan budget, CGI, massive marketing and promotion the '97 movie pales in comparison to the '58 version.

@margarethooten3007 l recently saw a documentary about how the band played on the thing is the chap speaking said the band did not keep playing will titanic went down well l was shocked but he was related to a survivor and kept saying that. The documentary was from 1960,s so l dont know.
To think they made this movie in 1958 blows my mind! Better then most movies today with CGI and effects! Stunning movie! Rip to all the souls who perished in the tragedy!
back then, it took an army of master craftsman working at their own specified job to pull a movie of this scale together. nowadays, it still takes a massive army... but they're all working behind a computer. kind of takes the fun out of it. thankfully, a lot of directors are choosing to do things the old way these days.

@@zoiefinnian3540 - The movie is the best made on the topic considering what they knew at the time and the limit of special effects. One flaw I saw was Lightholler in the lifeboat with a sweater. A lady I knew as a child, Elizabeth Mellenger was on lifeboat 14 that pulled him out of the water. She gave him her cloak to keep warm and he gave her his officer's whistle. That would have been nice in the movie and factual.

Even more heartbreaking when there was plenty of room in the lifeboat for him and other men. Lightoller unnecessarily killed him and took those children's father away from them. Makes my blood boil

It was Lightoller. He refused to allow any men on the boats, regardless. Murdoch allowed men on when there were no more women or children around his side.

This was based on Walter Lord's book where he describes the sinking minute by minute by not only testimonial records but with actual interviews of the survivors. He even lists the entire passenger list, with those who survived in italics.
Read that many years ago, very well written. Well worth finding a copy.

I had never seen the whole movie. It hits like a brick. Maybe James Cameron made a fantastic job, but this one seems so authentic. A real human tragedy, without made-up story or sensational views. Just an honest report, brilliant.

I didn't cry when the ship sank in the James Cameron version, but that old man with the little boy had me close to sobbing damn it..GREAT film.
I broke into tears,and wept.
The scene that got to me the most was when the father put his wife and three children in the lifeboat, knowing that he would die.
I was cheering for the iceberg in Cameron's version...it couldn't have come soon enough.

1:43:23 ......i remember as a little boy, watching this with my mom and sister, this scene would always make my mom start sobbing uncontrollably. I kind of understood why at that age? ...now in my 40's, having a child about to be a teenager, I get it. I really get it.. children are just so precious and meant to be cared after. so here's this kid whose all alone and without his mom. crying as such, not being able to find her. then amidst the chaos, panic and confusion... here comes this kind and gentle man offering to take care of this child. he's not showing panic. he's not showing doubt. he's just keeping a warm voice and helping to "find" this boy's mother. he knows they'll both be meeting their cruel and fateful end very soon, but also knows that this child needs to be kept warm and with spirit for as long as humanly and physically possible. it's just such a gentle and heroic thing to do.
now here I am, in my 40's....and sobbing uncontrollably.

One of the saddest lines of dialogue in the entire movie.
It feels more like a spit in the face after they spent the entire night watching them fire rockets and ignoring it could mean something important.
You would think that common sense would have dictated checking the wire when you observed rockets being fired at regular intervals.
You wouldn't like to be the watch officer on the Californian, learning later what those rockets meant. That knowledge would be very hard to live with, though, in a way, I can understand them. It was a different time, one didn't assume that somebody else was in danger, and the means of conveying distress were, by no means, standardised. A very sad saga.

The father of the 3 kids and having to lie to his beautiful wife as he says goodbye, was such a heartbreaking element.
This was based off of a real life account, his daughter stated this in the interview but if i remember the real life story there were two daughters, very heartbreaking
yes this was a haunting-realistic moment acted extremely well...funny i don;t have kids but i [fully]understand the man who got into the life raft when no one else stepped forward--he wanted to live as well...the tragic irony is that more people could have been saved-poor management of life boats--in the end the man who as some would say cowardly, got in the life boat and lived!

For me it's when Andrew's tells him the ship is doomed. Seconds earlier he'd said "I'm not the panicking kind" and he wasn't, but the subtle facial expression change as he realises how serious it is, is incredible. Literally from the moment Andrews tells him he KNOWS he's probably going to die, and he doesn't panic. He gets his family into the boat and safety by any means he can and goes to his end knowing he succeeded in the one thing he was able to do. Yes, it's a film. Yes, he's a character. But there were men on that boat who more than likely had to do what he did.
What makes this film so good is the historical accuracy.

I live in Southampton. Yesterday I had reason to go up London Road (about a few hundred yards from the city centre) and I stopped at the Titanic Engineers Memorial and the Musicians Memorial to look at some of the names. Couldn’t help but shed a tear as usual.
This is the original movie from Titanic. Realistic, showing everything, showing the history for each family, for me, it’s the best movie.
There were several movies made about the Titanic before this.

the couple with the three kids broke my heart so much. The sad part is leaving the love of your life on a sinking boat.
The Band played on... that was always so tragic and heartbreaking to know they never stopped, according to survivors. Stiff upper lip and all that- I think of it as true heroism.
The band leader was Wallace Hartley. They recovered his body a couple of weeks after the sinking. 1000 people attended his funeral with an estimated 30-40K lining the route.

I watched a video on the Titanic and what happened to Captain Smith and I ended up crying through the last 15 minutes. Even after 111 years it still brings a tear to imagine what these brave souls went through that night. Watching a documentary James Cameron made on his first dive to the Titanic and sent the first remote camera inside of the ship and to see woodwork and chandeliers still hanging is beyond amazing and sad. The Turkish salon with its beautiful stained glass windows with the colours still there! Just wow.
The Great Late David McCallum plays a small role , he was very young in this great film , RIP David McCallum.

He is the narrator of the 1994 documentary "Titanic: The Complete Story. Part 1: Death of a Dream. Part 2: The Legend Lives On" (which, I think, was produced by A&E).
This is my favourite film of all time. It's not schmaltzy like the other Titanic film but strives to be accurate and I find it very moving. The bits where the wives don't want to leave their husbands makes me think of if I were in that situation. Could I leave my beloved partner and go in a boat? No, I'd rather he went and I stayed. Like the old lady said to her husband "we stay together, I will not go". And Kenneth More is superb. My favourite actor. He was in the Navy in WW2 so must have used his knowledge to make his acting better.
yes this is a key scene..a truer test of love --we love together we die together..(that's what strength and love really is--to die with your loved one...and truly be there for each other--she was there for him!!

What do you mean, isn't the Titanic movie of 1997 accurate? James Cameron is a Titanic enthusiast and has gone down on numerous occasions. I've seen his documentaries about the Titanic, and they're extremely scientifically accurate.
I had not realised just how closely the James Cameron version was a remake of this classic. Even down as far as the dialogue in some cases. Given the filming techniques available at the time, this is a remarkable achievement. Thanks for posting.

@@Borninthe80s. Some seemed to have been taken. In A Night to Remember, the Californian operator remarked "Some big bug wants his private train to meet him in New York". In Titanic, Philips remarked "See this one, he wants his private train to meet him, la-di-da". There is however no surviving historical evidence that support these statements, and if it was true, it would not have been present in the Titanic inquiry due to its private nature.

There were more than 700 survivors, most of whom lived for decades after the sinking, many of whom talked to the press, talked on film, talked on television, were interviewed for books and periodicals, &c.
Well. Cameron even took Bernard Fox who played Frederick Fleet and promoted him to Colonel Archibald Gracie III.
I saw a movie made in 1996 literally called ‘The Titanic’ and was colorizeds, so i think that was related to the 1997 james camerons titanic

I can’t imagine how they must have felt - the Carpathia, doing everything they could to get there but knowing they’d ultimately be too late; and the Californian, hearing the news in the morning and realizing they’d watched the whole thing and done nothing to help. Rostron went above and beyond, putting his own ship and people at risk in the process and Lord, who was within sight, did nothing. How sick they must have felt with it all.
But Californian didn't see anything. An illegal fishing vessel was in the way !

I have read the book ('A Night to Remember' by Walter Lord) several times-so much so that today I feel like I was aboard the ship. I have this film on my external hard drive and watch it whenever I feel like it. Having seen this the 'Love Story' film by Cameroon made little impact on me. I disliked it. Especially the love-making scenes. 🥰Lots of love from India.
In the end the ship sinks 😂
This is by far the best Titanic film. So many mistakes were made along the way. It is hard to believe that it has been 111 years since the disaster... RIP to all the lost souls.

I think this is the best depiction of the titanic on screen. Its also cool that there is no CGI. The wizard of oz's tornado scene is scary and great despite the total lack of cgi. Classic movies are the best.

The old man with the little boy 😢touched me and the father with the three kids, he had to say goodbye to his wife and kids 😭, the young couple that didn’t want to be apart man hold a space in my heart I don’t even know them they all remind me of me and my husband and kids man I’m glad I watched this version 😢 of it.

Yes I too saw this film in Black & White in the year 1968-69 with my Dad.. The very next week we saw "The Guns of Navarone". Good Ol days...

Absolutely first rate. Well-acted with outstanding production values (sets, costumes, etc.). The cinematography heightens the drama of each scene and the director and editor have kept the pacing tight. The mood becomes increasingly tense with the suspense building slowly. Genuinely a classic.

I agree. I've only seen the James Cameron version once. Sure, it had more spectacular shots during the sinking, but I was appalled by how the movie spend most of it's time focusing on non-related fictional characters and a nonsensical romance story, that clearly could not have happened that way on the real ship. And I shouldn't even start about that horrible soundtrack with Celine Dion. 🤮
This movie however sticked to the stories told by actual survivors and shows the tragedy in a realistic manner. I would love to see this movie in a higher quality restored with accurate colorization. But I appreciated that I could watch it as is on TH-cam anyway.

It really is. Kids usually survive in movies, especially older ones, but somehow I'm glad they didn't go in that direction with this film. Many children died on the Titanic, and their tragic fates shouldn't be forgotten.
The old gentleman actor was also the waiter, in A Hard Day's Night .

My mother took me to NY city in 1958 to see this movie. I still have vivid memories of it. This is the first time I have seen it since then. It has even more impact on me now.
Actually just stop and imagine being the captain when Andrews told him that she'll sink, a mathematical certainty. for the next two and a half hours he knew he was dead , for the simple fact that he cannot leave his ship until the last man..... a brave captain

Considering the wreck wasnt found and not a ton of people knew it split, this was and amazing movie with good actors.
It was well known that a few survivors claimed it split, but WSL insisted it was impossible, and since basically everyone on a lifeboat was in too much darkness to know for sure, the people who insisted on the split were basically overruled.

And each time, I always hope that THIS time they won't hit the iceberg. This movie was mentioned in an article I read recently titled Hollywood's Most Accurately Made Historical Films. I have to say, I totally agree. My heart just breaks for all those people. 💔

How fortunate I am to be able to see all these different versions of TITANIC. At the time of this writing we are all dealing the loss of the TITAN. I think my opinion now is to just let it be. A sort of Grave to all those lost souls.

You should see how many plaques the pathetic narcissists have left on the wreck. It’s obscene. There’s like 12 of them sitting upright leaning against the wheelhouse (to say nothing of the plaques left elsewhere). One left on the bridge is solely devoted to the “Guinness Word Record for youngest diver to the Titanic”. It’s grotesque.

Must admit didn't intend to watch all of this film, but I found it totally compelling and watched it all.. Great cast too, many in their younger days, great to see a young Honor Blackman and David McCallum. It almost feels like history in action.
This version of the telling of the sinking of the Titanic is the most profound, accurate, and disturbing of all the accounts that were made as far as I’m concerned. There was no dramatic music in the background, no special effects from CGI, no passionate love scenes thrown in, no offense James Cameron, just raw emotion and facts. There were so many emotional gut wrenching moments and when that poor father had to say goodbye to his children and hand his little son over my heart was ripped out of my chest. I can’t even imagine what those poor people went through! No matter how many times you watch these accounts of the Titanic it never ceases to bring up the horrific moments those poor soul’s went through.
May God have mercy on their souls and may they rest in peace, and I pray this for all who lost their lives at sea. 🙏
I didn’t like what Cameron did with the Titanic story. He turned it into a made up love story and added porn. How typical for Hollywood to always have its head in the gutter.

This was made in 1958. The idea of Titanic splitting in two wasn’t fact until it was discovered in 1985. Up until then, no one knew for sure. Some survivors claimed they saw it break while others said they didn’t. To this day, even though we know it broke in two, no one can fully agree on how it happened.

There were SO many true heroes of this disaster, but Capt Arthur Rostron of the Carpathia did his absolute best to cope with the information that he was given, after all of the news of Titanic being unsinkable. Captain E.J. Smith did his best on his last voyage before retirement having never faced peril, Charles Joughin (the chief baker on Titanic, AKA the drunk guy in white) survived Titanic's final plunge by clinging onto the stern rail and riding the stern into the water as she sank. His blood alcohol content helped him to survive the 28 degree F water. Then you have the officers, the chief engineer Joseph Bell who passed, and the fireman Frederick Barrett who survived, and the many ship's electricians, stokers, the lookouts like Frederick Fleet, the band along with leader Wallace Hartley, and the many men who stood aside and gave their best to ensure that as many women and children survived as possible. We had so many unsung heroes on Titanic that it's impossible to remember and mention them all.
Edit: Also, the "yachtsman" that limped down that lifeline was 60 year-old Major Arthur Peuchen.
Speaking of the latter, I notice there is no sign of Fleet sitting next to him and Margaret in this version..
In the other film all three of them plus Ruth are seen closely huddling next to each other.
I remember reading this book when i was young, and it started a lifelong fascination with the Titanic for me. The eyewitness accounts were amazing.
I was happy to see that David McCallum and the drunken baker survived.
The "drunken baker", in real life, would ultimately settle in northern New Jersey. He would pass before the movie was released, but not before Walter Lord got his story. Also, in real life, the baker, in between drinks, did his part in trying to get passengers up out of the depths of the ship. As far as Harold Bride, after he got on the Carpathian, he would help out its wireless operator, Harold Cottam, in relaying message from Titanic survivors. He worked on ships as a wireless operator until 1922, when he moved to Glasgow, in Scotland, where he engaged in land-bsed business until he passed in April, 1956. My guess is that Walter Lord may have talked to him while Lord was interviewing Titanic survivors.
The lady in the lifeboat who thought the man smoking was appalling could've learned from him. There was no better time than that moment to smoke and drink. Great movie 👍👍

The architecture of the ship is quite accurate, when compared with what it should be. Remarkable for a 1958 movie.

Every time I watch this (or 'Titanic' 1997) film I still find myself inwardly screaming 'Miss it - miss it !' every time it gets to the moment where the iceberg's been spotted and the change of direction's been ordered !. Either way BOTH films are extremely chilling !
The sad thing is, if they had hit it dead on it may have still sank but it would have taken much much longer and everyone would have been saved.

This is one of the best Titanic films and the colourization gives it an extra dimension. James Cameron's version was good but it had a $200M budget and advanced CGI which wasn't available in 1958.
Cameron still used far more practical effects than what we'd see today, it's really a marvel of it's time, using CGI to enhance scenes rather than make up the entire scene. I do like the completely basic practical effects of this one though, takes one back.
not to mention that with all that money, and resourses and after all the time and dedication in to details of sets and costumes, Cameron didnt bothered enough to use real history and decided to perpetuate myths and lies about the sinking from the media of the time... like the passengers locked down or that they were trying to break a speed record, or that they ignored ice warnings. Even today Cameron repeats the same myths as if they were true.
We all know that Hollywood blockbusters about historical events employ some artistic licence and "Titanic" was no exception. It is still a good film nevertheless and didn't win 4 Gloden Globes and 11 Oscars for nothing.

I have seen this movie many many times but this is the first time I've seen it in colour. Admittedly, the colour did slip at times giving some of the characters a bluish grey tint but that only added to that feeling of freezing cold. This is the first time I've picked up on the 'horse-shoe' that the yachtman pinned to his lapel. I could never previously make out what he was wearing. This was also the first time I noticed the crewman hitting people with the white piece of two by four on the boatdeck to keep them away from the lifeboats. I had never noticed that before.
This film was actually made not far from where I live. The documentary of the making of this classic is also worth watching.

@@jetstream6389 I have since learned that four scenes were 'pinched' from the Nazi propoganda film Titanic (1943). (I'm guessing they're the four at 11.37). The original director, Herbert Selpin who filmed that film was arrested by Goebbels for making negative comments about the military and then found hanging in his cell.

When I was 15 the Bookmobile stopped on my block so I always took out a book. Usually Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew. I saw the book A Night To Remember. I had never even heard of the Titanic. The librarian urged me to read it telling me it’s a true story. I loved it and have loved the Titanic ever since.

Thank you for uploading this movie. Just finished it for the first time. Im sure there are many heroic stories especially the men keeping lights and steam going til the end. But dam lightoller really saved many lives that night. He stood up to the challenge. God wanted him to survive and he had a purpose
I found the 1997 one good but too evolved around the a love story that would not have happened in reality. This movie you got to.see more characters and the how British officers would have behaved. This made me cry More than the

this version has far more grit--which is what i wanted to see and not some fake love story with a celine dion song(boo!)...when a ship is sinking fake love stops and reality sinks in---and true love- devotion begins --didnt see the jc version till 2010--as i knew it was more hype than grit

I like how this version seems kind of realistic for the most part, however, not after the sinking. Everybody who was in that water would be half dead, not sitting there calm and collected like Lightoller.

First saw A Night to Remember on TV back in the late 60’s and own the dvd……all these years later and its still a better movie than Cameron’s.
I have seen this fine film a few times before, and believe it to be the best of the films on this tragic event. It treats the matter with respect and yet imparts the heartbreak, courage, horror and sacrifice of that night.

@@Masterchief_Tito Survivors of the Titanic did see the ship break in half but when they told their story they were not belived. It was only in 1985 when they discovered the titanic that people started to belive the survivors.
Just watched this after giving the 1997 Titanic movie a re-watch. In my opinion, this movie is much better. Glad the whole movie is available for us all to see.

Kenneth Moore a fine actor indeed & to see this colourized just glorious. This British film won a Golden Globe (USA) for best picture & best British Screenplay & rightly so coz it was considered at the time to be the most accurate of the disaster & the superb cast captured that event so eloquently. Tho it depicts Titanic sinking in one piece only because no-one really knew what happened until discovered in 1985 when it was found broken at the bottom of the sea. Still very sad & the ship & everyone aboard didn't deserve their fate. Good to see David McCallum here & still acting in 2023 at the age of 89.
