@Milton absolutely!!!!! Good country eatin!!! @John you know!! No meal is complete without it!!! @Fred mayne, you done said something there!!! Peach cobbler pipin hot with vanilla ice cream!!!!
I was lucky enough to to hear Roy with my wife while she was pregnant. Every time he started to play the baby would kick. My daughter is a Pianist a violinist and vocalist. Also majoring in physics
I consider myself one lucky bastard because I was there! Those were some brilliant nights, ending up at the embassy bar of the Bel Air Hotel till broad daylight...
Peter Martin I am stumped. Wow. He played brilliantly here I remember him playing with Joshua Redman I won't forget his solo on St Thomas on that album
With each passing year, and each time I listen to it, I grow in appreciation of Ron Blake’s solo. Ron plays with Dion Parsons and the 21st-century band (as well as SNL). It’s a Caribbean inspired jazz group. It is seriously one of my favorite groups today. And it’s probably the best live concerts I’ve ever been to.
I love all these guys on record but watching them doing it on stage, digging each other, that's such a joy to watch - hats off to the camera men or women who shot this
It's New Year's Day 2019 and I'm just discovering Roy Hargrove. Wish I had known about him in the 90's, but I was listening to more Blues in that time period. RIP Roy-you still give joy to others thru your music!!
I was there... Went totally nuts... Incredible atmosphere! All concerts in that period of time at TNSJF were crazy good! The days that the North Sea Jazz festival actually had the best jazz concerts in the world playing actual jazz!!
Roy at 24/25-years has done his thing; has now sung into the celestial sunset of our memory. Roy,49:RIP Johnny cooks elegantly and departs after a great career in Organic Real Jazz opulence. JG: RIP! Joshua is more than a chip from the old Dewey Redman block: lyrical, passionate, soulful and, yes, very "human". I adore his split tone - multi-phonics, as one says. The last tenor soloist holds his own very well after absorbing the saxophone prowess that has preceded his. Cool swing from the troupe..
@@Yuppie.Mike. Ruined my life actually. I loved Roy Hargrove as much as any musician I've ever heard ~ and I am olde and have heard everyone including Hendrix Miles Trane Prince Ella Aretha Pavarotti Pollini blah blah blah Roy was one of the greatest of all time
All them are jamming like it ain't no bodies business but big guy sax got me strolling in the groove...this is so fly it's absolutely timessless it takes you out of year this year that you just in the groove
This is so so good, thank you! Just realized I ended up there that night by lucky accident, my very first time at the festival. Haven‘t stopped going since! 🙏🏻
Holy Tenor.. Roy gigged w Johnny Griffin? I did not know this. Holy Cannoli. Cannot even imagine the rehearsals. If they did rehearse or jam or woodshed or holy cannellini beans.
It was on the cd "With The Tenors Of Our Time".........had all three of these tenors plus Joe Henderson, Brandford Marsalis, and Stanley Turrentine......I DEEPLY TREASURE my copy !!
I don't think it's a bad list- I certainly agree with Pops at the top - I might have replaced Bix with Woody Shaw, Chet Baker, or Clark Terry - Remember, this was a top ten JAZZ trumpet list - which means more of a concentration on creativity, improvisation, passion, blowing beautiful solos - not on lead trumpet, high note, etc. -
Just enjoy eating some of these greens.and hot water corn bread they makin instead of dissecting it trying to figure how MUCH and how little ingredients was put into it...lol. just sit back and enjoy
Man, this video smells like fried chicken, ox tails, greens, mac n cheese, black eyed peas, and cornbread.....food for the soul baby!
YUM YUM........I'll take a plate of that....
Don't forget granddaddy keeps his corn liquor in the shed behind those paint cans!
Don’t forget that peach cobbler! Come on Miles i here yah this that ohhh we!
@Milton absolutely!!!!! Good country eatin!!!
@John you know!! No meal is complete without it!!!
@Fred mayne, you done said something there!!! Peach cobbler pipin hot with vanilla ice cream!!!!
And don't forget the mustard greens, brother!
Let's just take a minute to appreciate Peter Martin's incredible comping.
Understatement of the century! Such fine work!!
@@jambajoby32 Exquisite comping, indeed!
I know right, I was just thinking that I should transcribe some choruses of his comping before I saw this comment
If you like this Peter Martin, check out his DC's from five years later on MaxJazz.....Something Unexpected is one big live jazz party !!
Not to mention his solo had Thelonious Monk dancing in his grave.
I was lucky enough to to hear Roy with my wife while she was pregnant. Every time he started to play the baby would kick. My daughter is a Pianist a violinist and vocalist. Also majoring in physics
What a cooking rhythm section thanks for post
Ron blake has got that sound mannnn!!!
Damn I love Johnny Griffin so much

Peter Martin I am stumped. Wow. He played brilliantly here I remember him playing with Joshua Redman I won't forget his solo on St Thomas on that album
Have you heard the live version from Redman's live double disc ??
....on that album, all of it is just heaven....ESPECIALLY MT. ZOIN !!

Wow, Peter Martin your solo was beyond killing.
Peter Martin. ....Stunning
Hell yeah! Jazz will never die!
Was fortunate to see grif and roy in the early 90's. Still cant believe their gone. Roy passed too young, one of the greats as is grif.
Still coming back to video regularly after 6 years. Thank you so much for keeping this performance alive and well! ❤
I'm coming back daily after I discovered this piece earlier this year lol
One of the greatest songs I have ever heard
This performance gets better appreciation from me with the passing years. Swinging Groovy music as its best. Thanks Rafael Avakov for the posting
I love all these guys on record but watching them doing it on stage, digging each other, that's such a joy to watch - hats off to the camera men or women who shot this
I almost forgot to listen to this today
It's hard to think something more soulful than this amazing way this guy's have to express themselves. Remarkable.

It's never too late to appreciate a true genius. Roy was the greatest of his era. Bar none.
This is more blues!
Boy is n t it incredible it was only in 1994!!! so energetic and professional Roy played wirh the greatest jazz musicians on earth !!
I agree extremely gifted. I heard someone ask him about following chord progressions changes. He said he doesn't think it just hauled off and blows.
That album, "With The Tenors Of Our Time" is STACKED TO THE WALLS with vet and young lion (in the 1990's) talent !
I would LOVE to see this entire concert!!

Ron Blake is great!! Check out his stuff on Live at Tonic with Christian McBride
I really miss Roy!
This is easily my favorite jazz video on TH-cam. Try listening to it with a good pair of headphones or speakers. It's mind-blowing.
Headphones or stereo. Only way to really appreciate it. I have been listening to it in my car. Such a pick-me-up.
I can't stop watching this....amazing
Love Ron’s solo here, really lets this insane rhythm section help build his ideas. And wow his sound is massive!!

14:57 when the band and listeners are clapping on 2 and 4 ... the soul of jazz is in the room
Johnny Griffin and Roy Hargrove look exactly alike, like father and son. I've always thought so before.
All the premier trumpeters wrapped up in one
This is just power in the jazz. Rip Roy Hard Groove
ROY HARGROVE ... YOU ARE BRILLIANT ... BECAUSE YOU LEFT ... MANY OF US HAVE A BIG Pity

@9:15 Ron Blake, masterclass in pocket simplicity.

Peter Martin does not age.
ALL heavy weights!........ dam awesome!
Ya'll love this (and you should, FYI)? Find the jam sessions from the movie Kansas City were Joshua Redman and James Carter batteled !!
I have always loved Wynton Kelly's comping I am taking nothing away from Peter
Muito bom viu

check out peter martin quoting everybody all up and then embarking on his solo as he CONTINUES to groove with Hutch and Whitaker... enough said.

Popcorn anyone….☮️🎵🎶🎷
Oh yea!
OMG Peter Martin where have I been?
Man, how tall is Ron Blake? Awesome band too.
Dude clearly ate his greens at the chicken shack when growing up.
To be fair, Griffin is really short.
At 11:36 Ron Blake realized “I CAN play a successful solo after Joshua Redman 😅😅
Man it's a jail break😎
👍🏿
Joshua Redman, tenor sax; n1
I like Josh redman more playing blues than Beatles tunes lol
Is it me but does he sound like Lee morgan
Yup!!! 100%!!! Jimmy smith “The Sermon” title track
RIP Roy :-(
Amazing. So much swing from this rhythm section. Are young cats learning from old cats anymore these days?
14:58 👏👏

Is this actual version on an album? Thanks 😊
Roy, jes let Gabriel know was goin on
No Joe Henderson, too bad. But what a group!
Nor Stanley Turrentine...
Jonny Griffin"s sound was not right! That was a recording?/sound problem.
Tensop - maybe, but he was really into the gig, man and then some ;)
He's 2-3 feet off the mic half the time, that's the problem. Sounds fine when he's on it.
Just enjoy eating some of these greens.and hot water corn bread they makin instead of dissecting it trying to figure how MUCH and how little ingredients was put into it...lol.

Quickest way to clear a dance floor?
Bass solo...
😊
Not where I dance! :)
All this greens and chicken talk is lame as fuck. These guys were masters and deserve more than some cliche
The abaft appendix noticeably sail because band normally fire pace a horrible bookcase. guiltless, noisy cherry
Boring, always the same…
