The video is showing defining acts of German History from Arminius destroying the Roman Legions at the Teutoburger Forest, the Middle Ages and warring german princedoms, influence of the church ( the monks eating Germania ), the Weimar Republic struggles between the World Wars and the fight between extreme left and right ( The Brass Knuckle fight ), Hyperinflation in the late 20's and early 30's, Hindenburg Disaster, The Nazis and the Final Solution ( They wear not just the yellow star denouncing jewish people, but also the other symbols used to dehumanize other supposed minorities like homosexuals etc. ) Book Burnings during the Nazi Rallies, The partition into two german states ( Sickle and Hammer were the symbols of East Germany ), The 70's and the rise of leftwing terrorism ( holding Germania hostage ). Everything is put together with the red lasers, in german "Roter Faden" or "Red Thread" is a common usage when something is held together with a common thread. The lady is Germania and her symbols are of course the german flag colors of Black/Red/Gold. Even though they like to play with Nazi associations even to Till's guttural aggressive german speech like the Nazi leaders did, they are quiet left in their political believes. "Links, 2, 3, 4" another song puts that in the right perspective. Essentially the song is about the bands and many germans ambivalent thoughts about being german. Germany still has one of the lowest national pride levels worldwide, most of my generation even though my parents were born at the end or after the war feel guilty about the horrors our grandparents comitted in WWII and the Holocaust. When I was a small kid I had an argument with my Dad about evil and the devil, all my Dad said was that there was someone even more evil then the Devil and his name was Adolf Hitler. Just to show how some of us were brought up. All of us during their schooltime went to at least one Concentration Camp site, and even just writing here about it makes me emotional.

True, Germans grow up with a constant apology for what Adolf did. Even in the 80 with the many TV channels there were at least 2 documentaries a week about the Holocaust with the index finger raised afterwards... bad Germans... learn from history. Things have gotten a little better now thanks to the last soccer World Cup in Germany, but with the right-wing movement in German politics at the moment, you unfortunately have to ask yourself whether you have learned anything.😊

I'm glad that you weren't able to find a live version, so you were led to the music video. It has to be one of the most epic music videos ever. Like you said, it's like a short movie. It's so well done, and is so rewatchable, because it's impossible to take it all in with a first (or second or third) watch. Glad you did a little research on the meaning of the music video, because that makes it even better. And I'm with you on the piano outro too! 👍🎹🤟

Rammstein's videos show their creative journey. They always were very creative with their visuals but now they've reached the point of true art. Those videos are not only high-budged and cinematic but always involve a lot of double meanings especially if you put them together with the lyrics. Deutschland is packed with symbols and metaphors. Btw, in my opinion, monks feasting on Germania is a metaphor for the church feeding itself on the work of the nation (there was a time in history when the church benefited from the work of the other social classes, especially villagers). Another great parallel is when you can see a church burning a witch on the stake and Na**is burning books - both sides trying to get rid of knowledge (witches were usually considered to have forbidden knowledge).

Black, red and gold notes through the video symbolised the colors of the german flag. And the video is full of historical references. Totally awsome when you dig into it. It also reflects the troubbled feelings germans have for their history, with the line: so jung, doch so alt. Germany have a 1000 year history, but could also be said to only have existed since 1989.

Greetings and Love from Germany again. Big fanboy of yours, please don't mind..well, by your effort bout getting it right with Rammstein i'm sure you're not such a avarage reacter who reacted to them cause it promise lot of views and subs..seems you're more deeply intressted to the boys. So i thought you read thru the comments to see what its all about. Well, that can be confusing, cause many interpret the meaning quite differently. Thats always the case with Rammstein songs. They, or mainly singer Till writes the lyrics so smart that literaly everybody can make their own opinion of the meaning, in this way, everyone can find themselves in it, find a personal connection to it. It's all bout the fans, thats what makes Rammstein quite unique. So, there is a very competent Analysis video of that song 'Deutschland'. I saw a bunch of Ytubers who react it and were glad to did so. Ähm, well, a very little catch is there...for many Reacters at least. The Analysis video is bout 28 minutes long...sadwise and for some reason thats an issue, a no-go for many. Don't ask me why, it is what it is...to be honest, i would very, very muchy much love to see you react to it. But i'm not a patreon, i'm an odinary subcriber...but i don't care..i request it anyway 😊..and i send you the link to that video...full of hope and desperate faith that you don't ignore my lovely comment..for that, btw. took me bout Two and Half an hour to write..because of my bad, lausy school englisch. Native German speaker here
Rammstein is pronounced with English sounds kinda like "rum + shtine"
    basically
the German "a" sound is like the english "u" sound in "rumble" or "humble"...
the German "st" sound is like the English "sh" + "t"
the German "ei" sound is like the English "i" alphabet letter sound = as like in "mine" = just replace the "m" of "mine" with "sht" and you got the sound of "- stein"
And Google did it not bad but the "R" sound was wrong because it was a rounded rhotic R sound but the "R" in Rammstein is a rolled/trilled "R" sound (but by far not as much as dominant trilled as like as in Spanish or Italian but just a slightly trilled/rolled R).
The black girl is representing "Germania" which is a female symbol figure for "country, people and culture" embodying "Deutschland" ...similar to the English symbol female figure "Britannia" or the Scottish female symbol figure "Caledonia" or the Irish female symbol figure "Hibernia"
The video is basically following "Germania" through 1000 years of German history (although the prologue starts 2000 years ago = when German tribes butchered 3 Roman legions entirely in a deep forest = basically those 3 legions (= 20.000 soldiers including entourage) went into the forest and vanished to be never seen again - the Romans were till to that event "worldwide unbeaten" - and the German tribes stopped the Romans to expand their Empire into the German lands with that encounter which is seen by historians as "the birth of the Germans as united people" because it was the very first time the German tribes acted united )
"Germania" is the center of every scene which are symbolising certain historic periods or events. Germans know exactly what´s going on in the video and all the others are just confused due to not knowing German history..
By the way the piano outro is actually the melody of the chorus of an other Rammstein song titeled "Sonne" (= which means "sun")

I have never seen any of your previous reactions, but I must say that I liked your way to do it. Interested in the actual meaning and trying to understand what the musics symbolism is.
My interpretation of this song is that they love their country but, on the other hand, make up with their violent and sometimes awful history. I like this song and video a lot.
A suggestion for another band that makes great videos and with an important message is Sabaton. A power metal band that always makes songs on history events or persons in war. A couple of suggestions from them are Christmas truce, 1916, No bullets fly and Night witches. They do very good live videos, but the most great are the official videos and the animated ones.
They don't block their videos while they want to spread the history of horrors of war. They even have an own TH-cam channel where a historian explains the history behind the song. The best way to learn history, in my opinion!

Before I go through it just some general remarks: the black lady’s persona in the video is “Germania” and she represents Germany (the nation / the people) and in many scenes where she appears the colors black, red and gold (colors of the German flag) are dominant. The video as well as the lyrics are a critical review on Germany’s history.
Main scenes of the video: The first scene with the roman soldiers refers to the battle of Teutoburg forest, the first time the German tribes untied under Arminius against the Romans and ambushed them on their march back to their winter camp + completely annihilated several legions - the Romans would never return and fortify at the Rhine - this could be seen as the birth of the German identity.
The red laser beams throughout the video I think are guiding thread (German expression “roter Faden”" translates to “red thread” and translates to guiding principle / guideline of a story)
When Germania (black lady) in golden armor (black red gold as main colors of the scene pushes the standard into the ground she raises all the dead medieval knights - a reference to the strength of the German people who recovered time after time throughout history from catastrophes (especially, but not only) in the middle ages (crusades, Hunnic invasion, plague, etc.) - the additional meaning i think is the fact that German people several times followed their countries call for War - even if they were already beaten up (e.g. after WWI going into WWII). The standard I guess refers to a relic which was part of the Imperial regalia of the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation ("Heiliges Römisches Reich Deutscher Nation" - the conglomerate of mostly German territories which was ruled by a emperor elected by the highest ranking nobles of the realm and persisted from the 10th century until 1806). This relic, the Lance of Longinus, is dated back to the 8th century and was said to contain in it's tip one of the nails that were used in the crucifixion of Jesus. It was supposed to make any army that carries it into battle invincible. It can still be seen today in a museum called "die Schatzkammer" (the treasure chamber) in Vienna,/Austria.
Next scene (fistfight) is from the roaring twenties, the period between the two world wars where upper class society was decadent on the backs of ordinary people + entertainment industry was born.
Next scene shows the Hindenburg disaster (famous German Airship which blew up in flames) during a time of growing industrialization 1930s.
Next Scene is from the communist elite in eastern Germany who was indulging in party and Champaign while ordinary people were poor and the main idea of communism should be equality of the people.
Then the scene in the middle ages - where the monks (representing the church) feast on Germania (the land) and suppress the common folk (underneath the table).
The scene in the prison again refers to the roaring twenties, as Germania is dressed in a Prussian uniform suppressing the German people. Additionally money is thrown away by everybody, a reference to the big inflation in Germany after WWI.
Then the rockets (Nazi German was working on the first warfare rockets called V1 and V2 (V standing for “Vergeltung” which translates to retaliation - fitting to the picture with the rockets, the lyrics are an alliteration on “über” a german pre-syllable/prefix meaning over. “Überheblich (overbearing / presumptuous), Überlegen (superior) Übernehmen (taking over), Übergeben (handing over), überraschen (surprise), Überfallen (ambush), „Deutschland, Deutschland über allen“ (Germany, Germany above everyONE). The line „Deutschland, Deutschland über alleN“ (Germany above everyONE) is a reference to one of the verses of former national anthem of Germany which was in use from 1922 to 1945 and got excluded after WW2 for being too nationalistic. In this verse there was a line “Deutschland, Deutschland über alleS“ (a subtle difference to the line in Rammstein’s version translating to “Germany, Germany above everyTHING”). The actual verse with this line was already written in 1842, long before the formation of Germany as a Nation (which only happened in 1871) - therefore “Germany, Germany above everything” was relating to the importance of uniting the several German ministates, kingdoms and Duchies into one nation. After WWI this verse got taken into the national anthem of Germany as it spoke to the patriotism of the German people but later officially excluded from the anthem since it was deemed too nationalistic. Today this verse/line is generally frowned upon and would be associated with Neo-Nationalism. Using this line in the scene with the concentration camps including the subtle change from “Germany above everyTHING” (which has already the nationalistic connotation) to “Germany above everyONE” which carries an even more nationalistic / racist meaning is a very clever double-reference to the doctrine of racial supremacy in the Third Reich.
The Concentration camp prisoners have symbols sewn on their jackets for the groups the Nazis hunted and killed (One with yellow star for Jews, One with Pink triangle for Homosexuals, One with yellow and red triangle Jewish political prisoners and One with it seems to be the black mark for “work-shy” or “anti-social”. . Germania is on the side of the Nazis and has an eyepatch (representing the blind eye that many Germans turned on the atrocities of the Nazi regime).
The Scene where Till is dressed as a woman refers to the left wing terrorist group called “Rote Armee Fraktion” - a terrorist association in the 1970s responsible for several political assassinations and murders as well as a famous kidnapping of German Diplomats in Stockholm.
Then there is the scene with the stake at which books are burned by the Nazis and people are burned by the church (inquisition). Later the monk (church) and the Nazi soldier hug (as the church did not go against the Nazis when they came to power and both organizations were responsible for a lot of intolerance and suffering in their times.
The scene where Germania is dressed in white with a Halo I think refers to the positive, the strength of the German people who recovered time after time from several catastrophic disasters in their history. Later she gives birth to puppies representing the German people. The puppies are from a rare breed of dogs (Leonbergers) who’s population got almost extinct in both world wars (symbolized with the dogs wearing gas masks) but recovered after the wars. The person with the red robe represents the judiciary (federal constitutional judges wear red robes). In these scenes the band members wear space suits - in my view a reference to the (hopefully) better future of the German people.
In the very last scene of the outro you can once more see Germania with national colors (black, red gold) with black lipstick, red eyes and golden armor before a red/ black background holding an eagle, the heraldic symbol of Germany.
One further remark to one of the more important lines of the lyrics: The line in this song "So jung und doch so alt" (So young and yet so old) refers to the fact that the German people with their idenitify have been around for thousands of years, however the actual state of Germany as a nation was only founded very late (1871) thorough the unification of several mini states (Prussia, Hessia, Saxonia, Bavaria, etc.) But it can also be understood that today's Germany has only existed since the reunification of East and West Germany (October 3, 1990): so young and yet so old.

    - The Soviet army fighting back the Wehrmacht in Stalingrad
    - Wehrmacht wich is about the Soldiers and was quite controversal

    - Father about Fritz Haber who invented artificial fertilizer but also chlorine gas
-Soldiers of Heaven about Italien and Austro-Hungarien wars in the Alps
-Hearts of Iron about German Soldiers protecting civillians from the red army during the last days of war in berlin

I'll try to summarize the scenes. I don't have to be right about everything either.
The Woman is the Goddess Germania, Symbol of Germany/ Deutschland
In the so-called Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, also known as the Battle of Varus or Battle of Hermann, Germanic tribes led by the Cheruscan Prince destroyed three Roman legions
After the First World War there was an eventful afterlife with fist fights; the pugilists earned some money to live on for themselves and their families
The Hindenburg Drama. Germany had the largest airships (zepelins named after the builder). There was a great disaster in New York. To this day it is not clear whether it was an accident or an attack.
Hammer and sickle symbolizes the German Democratic Republic (division after World War II)
The monks symbolize the time of the 30 Years' War
The Thirty Years' War from 1618 to 1648 was a conflict for hegemony in the Holy Roman Empire and Europe that began as a religious war and ended as a territorial war.
    Start: Second Prague Defenestration
Outcome: Peace of Westphalia; Peace of Münster
According to estimates, the population of Germany fell from 16.5 million in 1618 to 10.5 million in 1648
    The hyperinflation of 1923
Driven by the reparations payment by the victorious powers in the Peace of Versailles, which made Hitler's seizure of power possible
    Examples of price decline
On June 9, 1923 in Berlin:
    1 egg - 800 marks
    1 liter of milk - 1440 marks
    1 kilo of potatoes - 5000 marks
    1 tram ride - 600 marks
1 dollar was equal to 100,000 marks.
On December 2, 1923 in Berlin:
    1 egg - 320 billion marks
1 liter of milk - 360 billion marks
1 kilo of potatoes - 90 billion marks
    1 tram ride - 50 billion marks
1 dollar corresponded to 4.21 trillion marks.
World War 2 and the extermination camps
The stars on the men at the gallows represent the different prisoners
Political prisoners, Jews, Sexually Different and Criminals.
Germany developed rocket technology, jet aircraft and many other weapons of war.
After the war they were happily taken over by the victors and the engineers also worked for the victorious powers
    Til in women's clothes
RAF Red Army Faction was a terrorist group
Bader (a man) and Meinhof (a woman were the masterminds. Kidnapping and killing of politicians and business leaders
    The fires
Book burning in the Third Reich and witch burning in the Middle Ages
    Both evil factions embrace
The little dogs with gas masks
Symbolizes German soldiers in the First World War with weapons of gas destruction used by both sides
The dogs represent the children of Germania. It is meant to symbolize that Germans follow orders like a good dog. Very drastic but Germans think very much in black and white. either good or evil. Other cultures think more in shades of gray
I must have forgotten something or not interpreted it correctly.
The song in the credits is Sonne by Rammstein

Ashlena In order to understand the video you should really know German history (and its dark sides). If I started explaining the scenes and their opinions now, you would still read my comment tomorrow. The video has so many layers and details... phew... Although many people recommended the video to you (probably because of the overwhelming production) I wrote to you in a comment that I would rather recommend "Adieu". Also a good production but easier to understand. “Angst” is also an interesting possibility. Rammstein has always placed great value on good videos. “Radio” is also one of them. There are so many... I'll leave it to the others to come up with suggestions. Or you make a voting list... "Happy Rammstein Friday"... Haha. The videos are also available with English subtitles (not official Rammstein but approved by them) I think this is easier for you to understand the songs. Whoever brought you to Rammstein was right... there's a lot to explore 😉

As much as I loved this song, I stopped listening to Rammstein after the serious allegations against lead singer Till Lindeman.
He was accused of drugging and 🍇 by multiple women in multiple countries. These women had proof and their stories were matching up. There was a whole sceme of him systematically taking advantage of young women. Some interactions were consensual (although still questionable because of the fan status and age difference) but others were not. There was a big coverage in Germany media and the whole thing is a huge rabbit hole. He literally wrote a poem about sleeping with a drugged out women.
As far as I know there is nothing solved in court (yet). But many distanced themselves from the band and stopped listening to them (including me) because they believed the evidence by the woman and the sheer amount of story’s. And in this case this isn’t a separate the artist from the art kind of stuff because he had personal literally recruiting young fans for concerts to get drunk (and allegedly other drug use) together, stand in row 0, perform sexual acts during the show.
All in all a risky situation you might wanna look into before “promoting” their music further.
