Howto: Automatic patch changing using MIDI (REAPER)

  • Hey hey.
    This is a pretty quick tutorial going over the basics of setting up program change messages from a laptop to a MIDI-compatible signal processor.
    This system is used by a lot of bands for live performances these days, probably spearheaded by the "djent" scene (bands such as Periphery, Tesseract, Animals as Leaders...)
    This means that you don't need to worry about changing guitar tones with footswitches mid-set, as the computer will take care of it for you.
    This is also possible with any major DAW, I just used REAPER as it's my workstation of choice, and also probably the best option for live performance, given its stability and low CPU usage.
    I might do an even quicker run through on Pro Tools, Logic, or Studio One at some stage if it's necessary, but the process is more or less the same.

    Thanks heaps for this man. The "Bank/Program Select not Program" comment was a life saver for me. I've been stuffing around for two hours trying to fiddle with settings in program.

    Don't know if anyone else is still using an ElevenRack, but PC 127 will only get you part-way through the user bank. To access all of the user bank, leave MSB 0, but LSB 1. Then you can use PC 0-103 for a1-z4.

    Lol, I was trying to get this to work with the "Program" event, but it got me really confused since it requires you to draw a graph ... which didn't make much sense for me for selecting program changes. Thanks for the hint with the Bank/Program Select!

    Damn, this is good information..
    It worked with my Zoom G1xFour.
    But in order to go to patch 21 for instance, I had to set the MSB/LSB right most text to the index of the bank startig from 0:
    (PS: I am assuming MSB is the text box on the left and LSB is the text box on the right. And note that the Program Number is the same that will be used in the Zoom, because the patches start at 0)
    ------- LSB 0 + ProgNumber 2 is patch 12
    ------- LSB 1 + ProgNumber 8 is patch 28
    and so on.....

    Good tutorial!
    How can I apply the midi program change without play the song? Can I do this only pressing clic in the
    misurement or selecting any region in region list?

    Dave! Another question for you; does this work backwards? Like, can you record MIDI into the DAW and stomp around buttons on the AX8/MFC and have those be captured to then play back and use them as the trigger?
    I thought I could do this, but when I do, the triggers it captures have no bank/preset info (they're basically 0,0 so when I try to play the track and use them to change presets on the AX8, all it does is revert to the very first preset on the entire list of the unit)

    Hey I use reaper for Backing Live through my M audio interface. I use my pod direct into the P.A. So While im using the interface i should connect the pod to the same lappy via usb and set midi output to it ? Not too sure about this. Thanks in Advance bro

    • @0DaveC

      I can't remember - been too long since I had mine! I THINK it has a midi interface - if it's not showing up in your midi devices list under preferences, you'll need to use a USB MIDI cable and go that way. :)

    Hello! Thank you very much for the video! I have a question for you: how to make midi files play correctly on all devices? The fact is that, for example, I have a file with several parts of different instruments recorded on different midi channels. However, when saving these files, all the parts are played by the piano sound in the Windows Media Player, although I assigned midi programs in the ReaControlMidi plugin. interestingly, of all the parts, only the drum parts play correctly, the rest play the sound of the piano. moreover, when I downloaded midi-files from the Internet with different parts, they were played correctly, and the midi files recorded by me are played back only by the sound of the piano and drums on the tenth channel. Please tell me how can I fix this? Thank you very much!

    Does this work on the axe fx standard? I did everything exact and it's not changing the patch. Also everytime I hit play on reaper it goes straight to patch 000 and that's it

    What about using program change from ya midi controller (evo mk461, which says it has no midi in, connected via USB), and you want to PC to change preset for the active FX?
    Used it with reasynth alone on track one, save as track template, and when inserting track from template the 'link to programChange'works.
    is there a way to setup so pc changes preset for active fx/track?

    • @0DaveC
      @0DaveC  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jonny Hotchkiss Sorry for the late reply buddy. Let me get this straight, you want to use your MIDI controller to change the patch in a softsynth, etc?
      Should just be a case of mapping CCs with your DAW! Program Change is typically for use with external hardware.

    Hey Dave, hoping you see this; I'm trying to set up my AX8 to do this...I followed your instructions exactly, and the AX8 does light up the little light next to "MIDI IN", indicating input, but it's not actually changing the preset. Do you have any ideas for this? Thanks!

    • @0DaveC
      @0DaveC  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ben Rosemberg hey buddy! I have no experience with the AX8 but it works flawlessly with my axe-FX. Are you certain you're using the right kind of midi message?

    Hey man! Do you happen to know how I might be able to change certain factors within the same patch? Like at one point I want the patch to have reverb but then later I want that same patch to have the reverb turned off. Can this be automated?

    • @0DaveC
      @0DaveC  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daniel Yates yep! What you want for that is midi CC commands, what are you trying to control? :)

    • @danielyates7383
      @danielyates7383 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave Curtis cool! Well my signal flow is using Logic on my laptop to my Scarlett6i6 and going midi out into the midi in on my POD HD 500x. If I can’t figure it out in Logic then I’ll probably just switch to Reaper. But my lead and rhythm tone are the same patch just with reverb and delay enabled when I’m playing lead. I figured out how to switch from patch to patch, but I don’t want to have duplicates of the same patch in my pod if I can just switch the effects. I see the MIDI CC page on my pod but I’m not really sure where to go from there. Thanks!

    • @0DaveC
      @0DaveC  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daniel Yates yeah man! There should be CCs assigned to your reverb block, set it to 0 for off, or 127 for on. You do that basically the same way as other MIDI control messages
