I live in a clay soil area and slugs own this place. Planted out marigolds , woke up with 1/2 of them gone, flowers and leaves. Following night, at 11pm, went out with a torch, a plastic tub with hot and very salty water, and metal pegs to pick the slugs up. picked about 500 slugs 😫 Yes I was counting. these are just the ones I found at that particular time! They we’re eating all my plants and flowers. They were on my mint plants, onions/chives, leeks and all. No plant is slug proof at all. I’m sick of them. Garden Isn’t even that big.
As a biologist I can see this being a long term and very effective soil treatment. Other factors may increase or decrease the results, such as concentration.
Cracking video, man. I don't use any tap water in my vegetable gardens so there are probably a decent amount of nematodes multiplying in the soil. Everything seems healthier. Last year when it was watered by tap water there were slugs all over the place but this year very few.
@@simplifygardening That is a good amount of water in storage but it's amazing how quickly it gets used up - I was really surprised this year as on hot days the garden can take hundreds of litres of water per day.

Not slug related but I was stoked today to finally get to the point in my garden where some predators were helping me out with pest control. Had a few ladybirds picking aphids off one of my roses! The others are all clean and healthy!
This is very helpful Tony, we need a solution for our community garden. Nearly everything we have planted this year has been decimated by slugs. I will be suggesting this solution asap!

Very interested in making my own nematode soup! How long does it take, do you leave the slugs to feed for a few days or weeks? Do you have to keep topping up their food supply or do you just leave them with a few leaves in the beginning then let nature take it's course?
I've been looking for an infected slug since I first saw this video, but no candidates was ever spotted. So I ordered myself Nemaslug for 100m2, betting my luck should change after applying the first batch :), and then hopefully use your technique to keep going until the end of the season.
@@floriancrausaz4714 After applying nemaslug once, there was a bunch of infected slugs - I saw infected ones from two weeks out and all through the season iirc. I never got around to doing the technique described in this video though. This year I don't have that big of a slug problem (there are still some slithering around but they end their life when I see them) and the raised beds in the area that were worst off last year have only been used for growing garlic, which I don't think slugs like anyway.
I live by a river and water my garden with river water when it gets dry. There's also a spring nearby that runs constantly, loaded with calcium. Also live close to a horse farm so horse manure gets spread year round. I have a great garden but have never been able to control slugs.
Might have to try this. The picture of the slug pellet container was a type that doesn't use metaldehyde, they won't kill hedgehogs, the organic advanced slug killer ones are supposedly safe.

Hi Tony, thanks for this video I had seen this system explained once before by some one else and often wondered if I would give it a try but when I saw your video I decided no never the slimy liquid you were dealing with was repulsive to me. I make comfrey liquid in a bokashi bucket, I noticed that slugs got in there even though they do not attack live comfrey plants so once they were in there I shut the lid and used the comfrey liquid from another bucket. I then went to the bokashi bucket the following year it was not smelly and the lid had been knocked off and rain got into it. I went on to water my Hosta plants and clematis with it. I noticed that I had no slug damage my Hosta was free of holes, and the clematis shot up with thick shoots and large flowers. I have been adding more rain water and comfrey to the bucket and it remains affective and clears the slugs almost immediately.Thank you for the tip although I chose to do it in a different way.
Hello, I started two weeks back with these nematodes. two small questions: Is it normal it takes two weeks before the last slug is dead and how much more time do I have to wait before spreading the water out in my garden? How long will these nematodes live in my basket?
May I ask, what is the slug infected by? Im guessing bacteria in the soil? I totally missed that, even on replay lol. And can I use snails, those i have a huge issue with.
@@simplifygardening I planted 200 asparagus crowns in April 21. We are lucky enough to have a couple of acres of soggy damp mid wales. We have a fantastic display of ferns, more than we ever expected. Most crowns sending up 15 to 20. But only today, in early October 2021, whilst weeding under the ferns I have seen slug damage and then saw the slugs!!!!! My research brought me back to this video again. There will be slug harvesting, there will be lidded buckets with rainwater in them and there will, hopefully, be no more slugs...... Thanks.
Do you need to have already introduced nematodes (via nemaslug or other) initially for a slug to be infected? Or in any given garden will there be slugs infected anyway ? Many thanks!

I have wild garlic in my garden, in the past I’ve dug it up as soon as it appears. This year I’ve left it, appears the slugs are backing off the Hostas etc as very little damage. They do say garlic is a repellent, not sure I want wild garlic either tbh.
Yes Adam. Should have added that to my video. However organic fertiliser is fine. I often forget about chemical fertilizers as I always grow organically

Revolting, but excellent. How long should the drowned slugs be allowed to sit and decompose? Is there are period after which the nematodes themselves will expire in the soup? BTW thanks for doing these videos for us - excellent information and well presented.
leave for about a week. then when the nematodes are in the ground they last around 12 weeks and will multiply you may need to do it again for the season but then your done

@@simplifygardening I will try this on my 3 acres of 2-year-old native deciduous woodland which has a heavy population of the 6" black slugs. You mention temperature in your video. Is there a "best time" to use the nematode "tea" on the land?
My father would put disposable aluminum pie pans filled with cheap beer in between rows of his garden (depress the pans into the soil) leaving them all night. By morning they'd have many dead slugs in them. Repeat this for about a week and you can eliminate the slugs.
@@simplifygardening Yes that would work too. My father grew up in Georgia, his parents were sharecroppers growing cotton. They grew their food for their large family(12 children) in a 2 acre vegtable garden & had simple innovative solutions to rid the garden of pests. If you notice slugs, treating with beer traps every night for about a week worked the best. Blessings!
Holy cow....if I had slugs that size in my garden here in Michigan, U.S. I'd go out there with a shotgun. Seriously, my slugs are nothing like those, and I use Sluggo bait which is, according to the manufacturer and information sheets, harmless for pets and wildlife, being only iron phosphate...and it works great. The Ibiriaslug has invated West,south and now east Norway. I pick hundreds of them up after the rain ! Now (the frost is still in the ground) I have to start prepairing becouse daytime starts to go over 0 C. There is no garden center or here at the mill (farmer shop) that sell Nemaslug, just chemical snail poison. I have to order through webshop from Brittain. Or like you explain to find an infected snail and make the grubble my self. It's such a big problem here ! Neighborhoods organising massiv pick of snails, so I don't understand Nemaslug is not for sale here in Noorway.
He did say you can identify an infected slug by its swollen mantle at least I believe that's what he called it but it should be obviously different to an un affected slug

MuddyBootz nigel you just need one infected it will infect the rest. if you have 30 it would be rare that you wouldnt find one. just look for the swollen saddle sometimes bumpy. 8 to 10 degrees but the warmer the better

I've got a fairly large garden and this yr have got tons of slugs... all the things I have to encourage wildlife.. ponds.. wildlife area... tree branches. shrubs .. trees etc seems to be encouraging slugs too...I made access areas in my garden for hedgehogs holes in concrete weatherboard trench areas .. they rarely come.. although had 3 frequently visiting a couple months ago.. have 2 wildlife ponds plenty frogs newts.. and even spared a few leopard slugs which is meant to eat the others... dont know if they're disinterested and nothing seems to work.. couple nights ago I picked about 50 up.. big ones and put them in a paint scuttle with a lid and dumped them in the park.. seem to get the same amount each night at the moment...!!!??? Only bit of hope so far is put Guinness in a tray and seems attract and bump a few off.. but think I'll try this method now... at my wits end..😫
If you collect slugs in the hope they will be already infected with nemotodes (naturally) wouldn't the soil already be rife with nemotodes already? Or would you dose up the soil first and THEN you use the slugs?
Roman, around a 3rd of slugs will already be infected they carry this like a cold all your doing is providing a situation for it to multiply quicker than in nature. It takes about 8 days total
@@simplifygardening One infects slugs by puttning them into nematod solution, "Nemaslug" (available on webshops or in garden stores). You can use infected slugs as bate: cut them in 2 or 3 peaces depending on size & put them in the garden in the evening, where slugs use to turn up. Because slugs eat eachother, there will be more infected & will "pass away". This method is invented by a norwegian gardener.
So grateful for finding Your video!! I was out this morning to start a bucket and I think I found a infected slug with o hole in its side. Could that be infected with nematodes? I hope so. Another great way to get rid of them is so lure them into a bucket with sourdough and water mixed together. They drown in the sourdough. Thanks again for a very good video!

At 3:17 you mention the slugs will drown. When I tried this, the slugs were able to climb the walls of the bucket after being in the water. Do they just eventually starve and fall back in?
Sean they will end up in the liquid if they got out of the water its not deep enough or the float touched a side and they were able to get off scrape them down into the water.
Thank you very much for this video. I have used Nemaslug successfully with potatoes for the past three years and would like to use it on the brassicas also but, as you say, it is quite expensive so this is a big help. Slugs and snails have been really bad this year.
Yes, they have. The problem was a mild winter which allowed most of the eggs to survive, then we had a wet humid spring and summer, perfect conditions for slugs. The reason I made this video is if we have a mild winter this year, next year will be 10 times worse as they would have laid a lot more eggs due to the great weather for them we had this year. I've seen a couple of these videos. I remember Chris did one a while ago. The issue is that you just don't know if it is working or not. If you see slugs it might be working a bit, and if you don't see any it could just be that they are well hidden. I use the vertebrate friendly slug pellets and they have been the best defence I have had. I certainly am not knocking the idea of nematodes but the idea you can't see them makes it a difficult concept to have confidence in. Great video as always mate. very professional job. All the best.
I quite agree with you to have tiny green twigs for radish then leaves appearing two days later is enough for me. I had mushroom growing on a log the slugs got interested in them I just watered the ground and vegetation round the log next day no sign of slugs and the mushroom are getting g larger.
One thing you could do is encourage hedgehogs. They eat slugs. I put cat biscuits and water out for a local homeless cat, and the next thing I knew, I had four hedgehogs who love cat biscuits. Poor old cat has stiff competition these days. But I always make sure he gets some biscuits too.
hi. I like your video. but how do I know which slug is infected. it's hard to know which one is bumpy, for me , they all look same. what should I do? I found many slug in my plot.

Great idea. I have been wiped out this year and will give it a try. I also heard that frogs are good for taking out slugs and have put a pond in. Plus not digging over as digging over kills the nematodes. Any views on these? I think a hedgehog would be best but despite the penthouse hedgehog flat I have built it has sat there empty.

Thanks. I can watch these instead of going out in the weather - still counts as gardening right? Do you reckon the frogs help kill the slugs? I have been out catching slugs for my soup - not the most pleasant job .... any tips on catching the buggers?
Go out during the night after it has rained you will get tons, You will need a torch and tongs lol. Frogs def help with the slugs as do birds hedgehogs so anything you can do to attract those in is brill and they all need a water source so a pond fits perfectly. It's not the nicest stuff but I haven't seen a slug on my plot and other have been ravaged. Oh, one last thing. Watching MY videos count as time and half for gardening ;)
Couple of days, nematodes should be applied when ground temperature is above and stays above five degrees celcius for six weeks or longer. Also be sure to keep the area moist for nematodes to survive.
Great video.....I have two buckets of slugs on the go, one was started a month ago the other one just a few days ago, when Ive watered my garden with the nematode soup do I need to keep repeating this ? And will I need to repeat this next spring ?
Do it for 3 times 6 weeks apart and you prob will have got rid of most of them and next year you will hardly see them as they wont be there to lay eggs

I think you should revisit this issue now in wet Autumn (UK) with a definitive quick video bringing all the points raised over the last 4 years about this method. It could mean the end of poor old slug. Unless, then we need to think of a way of 'saving the slug' - a 'slug sanctuary' perhaps?
There is absolutely no issues with using this to water your veg. Especially if your watering soil around your veg. Nematodes are naturally occurring in the soil and in fact they are probably one of the most abundant species on the planet. All we are doing is increasing the numbers of the nematodes that attack the slugs. they do not feed on anything else other than the slugs so by the time harvesting comes around there would be nothing on your plants
Yeah…. big garden would mean big cost with Nemaslug but could you not buy one packet of Nemaslug and add some of that to a number of buckets therebye ensuring inoculation and creating a large volume for a large garden
Where can I get nematodes from? I live in the United States and they eat my flowering plants the petunias and impatiens which are in pots,and I just bought hostas spent a lot of money on them I also bought Lily's and want to plant them on the ground
I make a plastic cup with beer and I put it down in my garden and the slugs love it and go into the cup and I put them in a plastic bottle with soap in and there they go after.

We're battling slugs atm, this is by far the most practical method I've seen, imo.

Probably wise to use rainwater in the bucket, as chlorine could be killing the nematodes in some regions?

Tap water left in a bucket for a couple of days loses the chlorine to the air as well.

Beer in an ice cream tub 1/2 or 1/3 full, catches many snails and slugs overnight. They love it so much and get drunk and drown.
I tried this once but kept getting woken up in the night by drunken slugs fighting and shouting abuse at each other ;)

He said you need at least 1 infected slug with a raised or bumpy mantle that will infect the rest if the slugs while they are floating on the raft.
We have entire large patches of land full of slugs but NONE are infected. So yeah, this is an issue indeed.

I was doing some reading inspired by you and I found out that it's recommended not to use fertilizer 2 weeks before you apply nematodes.
Yes Adam. Should have added that to my video. However organic fertiliser is fine. I often forget about chemical fertilizers as I always grow organically
But fertilizer kills soil biology, and when that’s dead, the weeds thrive.
Can I use the beer filled with dead slugs for a nematode application or add it to freshly made nematode liquid?
Yes you can vivienne.

Revolting, but excellent. How long should the drowned slugs be allowed to sit and decompose? Is there are period after which the nematodes themselves will expire in the soup? BTW thanks for doing these videos for us - excellent information and well presented.
leave for about a week. then when the nematodes are in the ground they last around 12 weeks and will multiply you may need to do it again for the season but then your done

@@simplifygardening I will try this on my 3 acres of 2-year-old native deciduous woodland which has a heavy population of the 6" black slugs. You mention temperature in your video. Is there a "best time" to use the nematode "tea" on the land?
My father would put disposable aluminum pie pans filled with cheap beer in between rows of his garden (depress the pans into the soil) leaving them all night. By morning they'd have many dead slugs in them. Repeat this for about a week and you can eliminate the slugs.

Yes that would work too. My father grew up in Georgia, his parents were sharecroppers growing cotton. They grew their food for their large family(12 children) in a 2 acre vegtable garden & had
simple innovative solutions to rid the garden of pests. If you notice slugs, treating with beer traps every night for about a week worked the best.

Seriously, my slugs are nothing like those, and I use Sluggo bait which is, according to the manufacturer and information sheets, harmless for pets and wildlife, being only iron phosphate...and it works great. Great video!

The Ibiriaslug has invated West,south and now east Norway. I pick hundreds of them up after the rain !

There is no garden center or here at the mill (farmer shop) that sell Nemaslug, just chemical snail poison. I have to order through webshop from Brittain. Or like you explain to find an infected snail and make the grubble my self. It's such a big problem here ! Neighborhoods organising massiv pick of snails, so I don't understand Nemaslug is not for sale here in Noorway.

He did say you can identify an infected slug by its swollen mantle at least I believe that's what he called it but it should be obviously different to an un affected slug

MuddyBootz nigel you just need one infected it will infect the rest. if you have 30 it would be rare that you wouldnt find one. just look for the swollen saddle sometimes bumpy. 8 to 10 degrees but the warmer the better
I LOVE wildlife and do not want to hurt them! There's nematodes that eat flea eggs. Got those at the local garden center!
Sometimes we have to control them. But you could collect and relocate

Hi love all you videos but this one is very interesting as I have a slug problem, question I have is if I can't find an infected slug to place in my bucket will I get the same results with a bunch of slugs that I have already in my bucket to harvest nematodes, also how long does it take to get a nematode soup ,

I've got a fairly large garden and this yr have got tons of slugs... all the things I have to encourage wildlife.. ponds.. wildlife area... tree branches. shrubs .. trees etc seems to be encouraging slugs too...I made access areas in my garden for hedgehogs holes in concrete weatherboard trench areas .. they rarely come.. although had 3 frequently visiting a couple months ago.. have 2 wildlife ponds plenty frogs newts.. and even spared a few leopard slugs which is meant to eat the others... dont know if they're disinterested and nothing seems to work.. couple nights ago I picked about 50 up.. big ones and put them in a paint scuttle with a lid and dumped them in the park.. seem to get the same amount each night at the moment...!!!??? Only bit of hope so far is put Guinness in a tray and seems attract and bump a few off.. but think I'll try this method now... at my wits end..😫

If you collect slugs in the hope they will be already infected with nemotodes (naturally) wouldn't the soil already be rife with nemotodes already? Or would you dose up the soil first and THEN you use the slugs?

Roman, around a 3rd of slugs will already be infected they carry this like a cold all your doing is providing a situation for it to multiply quicker than in nature. It takes about 8 days total

If u put the slugs in the oven at 350°F for 55 min they will decompose jn apprx 4 days.

@@simplifygardening One infects slugs by puttning them into nematod solution, "Nemaslug" (available on webshops or in garden stores). You can use infected slugs as bate: cut them in 2 or 3 peaces depending on size & put them in the garden in the evening, where slugs use to turn up. Because slugs eat eachother, there will be more infected & will "pass away". This method is invented by a norwegian gardener.
So grateful for finding Your video!! I was out this morning to start a bucket and I think I found a infected slug with o hole in its side. Could that be infected with nematodes? I hope so. Another great way to get rid of them is so lure them into a bucket with sourdough and water mixed together. They drown in the sourdough. Thanks again for a very good video!

It's a brilliant idea Tony, but what a smell.
You only ever smell it when you open the bucket, but doesnt smell as bad as nettle or comfrey so well worth doing
Ah that's good to know, based on how my beer traps smell when I forget to empty them for longer than a day or so I was thinking this concoction is going to be horrific :D

Hi bill the ones with raised saddles or bumpy saddles are infected, u just need 1 and it will infect the rest while they eat the raft

Presumably you could collect a bunch of slugs and use Nemaslug to infect them. Then use the infected slugs to make the slug soup?

At 3:17 you mention the slugs will drown. When I tried this, the slugs were able to climb the walls of the bucket after being in the water. Do they just eventually starve and fall back in?
Sean they will end up in the liquid if they got out of the water its not deep enough or the float touched a side and they were able to get off scrape them down into the water.

Yes, they have. The problem was a mild winter which allowed most of the eggs to survive, then we had a wet humid spring and summer, perfect conditions for slugs. The reason I made this video is if we have a mild winter this year, next year will be 10 times worse as they would have laid a lot more eggs due to the great weather for them we had this year. I've seen a couple of these videos. I remember Chris did one a while ago. The issue is that you just don't know if it is working or not. If you see slugs it might be working a bit, and if you don't see any it could just be that they are well hidden. I use the vertebrate friendly slug pellets and they have been the best defence I have had. I certainly am not knocking the idea of nematodes but the idea you can't see them makes it a difficult concept to have confidence in. Great video as always mate. very professional job. All the best.

with a microscope, one could check to see if the same nematodes as are in the slug soup then are to be found in the soil. :)
But to identify the right nematode from dozens of others (species) is nearly impossible.
I quite agree with you to have tiny green twigs for radish then leaves appearing two days later is enough for me. I had mushroom growing on a log the slugs got interested in them I just watered the ground and vegetation round the log next day no sign of slugs and the mushroom are getting g larger.
One thing you could do is encourage hedgehogs. They eat slugs. I put cat biscuits and water out for a local homeless cat, and the next thing I knew, I had four hedgehogs who love cat biscuits. Poor old cat has stiff competition these days. But I always make sure he gets some biscuits too.

Great idea. I have been wiped out this year and will give it a try. I also heard that frogs are good for taking out slugs and have put a pond in. Plus not digging over as digging over kills the nematodes. Any views on these? I think a hedgehog would be best but despite the penthouse hedgehog flat I have built it has sat there empty.

Thanks. I can watch these instead of going out in the weather - still counts as gardening right? Do you reckon the frogs help kill the slugs? I have been out catching slugs for my soup - not the most pleasant job .... any tips on catching the buggers?
Go out during the night after it has rained you will get tons, You will need a torch and tongs lol. Frogs def help with the slugs as do birds hedgehogs so anything you can do to attract those in is brill and they all need a water source so a pond fits perfectly. It's not the nicest stuff but I haven't seen a slug on my plot and other have been ravaged. Oh, one last thing. Watching MY videos count as time and half for gardening ;)

What temps are ideal for the nematodes to multiply and how long does it usually take the slugs to die - a day or two?
Couple of days, nematodes should be applied when ground temperature is above and stays above five degrees celcius for six weeks or longer. Also be sure to keep the area moist for nematodes to survive.

Great video.....I have two buckets of slugs on the go, one was started a month ago the other one just a few days ago, when Ive watered my garden with the nematode soup do I need to keep repeating this ? And will I need to repeat this next spring ?
Do it for 3 times 6 weeks apart and you prob will have got rid of most of them and next year you will hardly see them as they wont be there to lay eggs

It could mean the end of poor old slug. Unless, then we need to think of a way of 'saving the slug' - a 'slug sanctuary' perhaps?

Yes you could
There is absolutely no issues with using this to water your veg. Especially if your watering soil around your veg. Nematodes are naturally occurring in the soil and in fact they are probably one of the most abundant species on the planet. All we are doing is increasing the numbers of the nematodes that attack the slugs. they do not feed on anything else other than the slugs so by the time harvesting comes around there would be nothing on your plants
Yeah…. big garden would mean big cost with Nemaslug but could you not buy one packet of Nemaslug and add some of that to a number of buckets therebye ensuring inoculation and creating a large volume for a large garden
Where can I get nematodes from? I live in the United States and they eat my flowering plants the petunias and impatiens which are in pots,and I just bought hostas spent a lot of money on them I also bought Lily's and want to plant them on the ground
How long once you make the new nematodes are they good for?
I make a plastic cup with beer and I put it down in my garden and the slugs love it and go into the cup and I put them in a plastic bottle with soap in and there they go after.
