April Stevens (Caroline LoTempio) was probably the most underrated female vocalist of that era. She appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show at age 23 in 1951, had hits through the mid 1950s, and then, won a GRAMY with her brother Nino in the 1960s. When she did No Hair Sam was was in her late 30s. Ageless! Did so many different styles- things! April did music videos decades before Madonna, Brittney, Taylor.
Charlie Rich was one of the greatest vocal stylists to ever sing cool country rock and blues. His voice was supple, understated, witty and wise. With the right material, manager, and health regimen, he might have possibly rivaled Elvis, who admired his talent.
WOW! I love it! As a major major Charlie Rich fan and collector I am blown away with the rare performance of Charlie Rich Sr in his pre Countrypolitan sound and look. April Stevens' sassy sequel is a unexpected delight
Seeing April and friends brings back my earliest memories of coming of age. I love revisiting the dance movements during the early days of Rock and Roll. They move and look the way I remember it.
On this day in 1965 {September 25th} Charlie Rich performed "Mohair Sam" on the Los Angleles-based syndicated television program 'Shivaree'... At the time "Mohair Sam" was at #33 on Billboard's Top 100 chart, three weeks later it would peak at #21 {for 1 week} aand it spent 11 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #6 on the Canadian RPM Top Singles chart... Between 1960 and 1976 'The Silver Fox' had thirteen records on the Top 100 chart, one* made the Top 10 and it reached #1, "The Most Beautiful Girl", for two weeks on December 9th, 1973... He had greater success on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart, from 1968 to 1980 he had forty-five records on the chart, sixteen made the Top 10 with nine reaching #1... Charles Allan Rich passed away at the young age of 62 on July 25th, 1995... May he R.I.P. * He just missed having a second Top 10 record when "A Very Special Love Song" peaked at #11 {for 1 week} on April 7th, 1974...
Very interesting. Never knew she sang with anybody but nino. Thanks for sharing, proves she does have a special voice and talent. Thank you for sharing. Nino and April are one of my favorite. I'm 64 and remember them well.
There is a discrepancy of the year April was born. Almost all say she was born in 1936, except for Wikipedia. Also the earliest recording she made, as far as I can tell, is 1951 and it is said she was 15. Tried to find out further which year is correct and most say 1936.
@@andythompson7725 She wrote her autobiography in 2013. Admitted in it that she took 7 years off her age. She got Nino to go along with it. Because they were competing with acts 10-15 years younger in the 60's. She included pictures where you can clearly see the difference when they were children. So 4/29/29 is accurate.
I haven't heard this one in a long time...it was great hearing it..thanks for posting jimc. Thanks for sharing with me ELRANDY....I totally agree with your comment. :)
This clip is from "Shivaree," a syndicated show from the '60s, similar to "The Lloyd Thaxton Show," and "Hollywood A Go Go." In most markets, this aired in the mid-afternoon, right after school.
The fact you have it at all is good enough. There's a lot of stuff that is lost forever, so the stuff that is around like this is great to see (which I can attribute to because for instance there are LOT of WABC airchecks from around the time of the 1967 Woodward Stakes (a race CAN be found on TH-cam as part of the four races between Damascus and Dr. Fager, the two top three year olds that year) at Aqueduct in New York that was billed as "Race of the Century" as they took on Buckpasser.
Yes you are right, I watched 'The Beatles Anthology' a couple of days ago and Paul said Mohair Sam was on Elvis's juke box, on repeat, when they arrived. It was their record of the moment too :)
This was staged very cleverly, putting the original and the "answer" song back-to-back. The blond guy who appears both times is the host of this show, "Shivaree".
I love this video....wasn't this from the show Shivaree with the goofy M.C.? Charlie Rich was a great singer, it's easy to see why Elvis enjoyed his sound. Charlie Rich did another great song called 'She Loved Everybody But Me' from the "Tomorrow Night' album about 1973 or 74...sooo great!.
I would hazard a guess, that most young men today in 2022, have no idea what French cuffs are! It never fails to cause me dismay, when I can find cufflinks for sale in big box stores, but they do not stock dress shirts with French Cuffs! I was 23 when this song was recorded - where did the last 56 years go?
OMG, where in the world did you find this?? I've got every song he ever sang and have been looking for something like this for so long! This man was so amazing, but he never received the recognition he deserved. Thanks so much for uploading this video! Naomi
Yeah, unfortunately, the sound is really bad on my "original" copy of this clip, and it gets even worse when the clip is copied. But there still seems to be quite a bit of interest in the clip, even though the audio is highly suspect.
His name was Gene Weed and he's exactly like those "professional rakes" in high school and college. They dressed like English nobility, drove sports cars and all they did was pick up girls.
Never grows old! Hearing the Silver Fox, and the Lovely, Gorgeous April Stevens! Magnifica!

Absolutely Love ❤️ this song! And Charlie Rich and April Stevens ❤
Charlie Rich was one of the greatest vocal stylists to ever sing cool country rock and blues. His voice was supple, understated, witty and wise. With the right material, manager, and health regimen, he might have possibly rivaled Elvis, who admired his talent.
According to Google Charlie always saw himself as a jazz musician! One of my all time favorites, his career had some ups and downs!
I think he does rival Elvis - in his own sensitive soulful way
this is one of the coolest things ever
WOW! I love it! As a major major Charlie Rich fan and collector I am blown away with the rare performance of Charlie Rich Sr in his pre Countrypolitan sound and look. April Stevens' sassy sequel is a unexpected delight

Both April and Charlie are among my all time favorites from the 60s. There weren't many answer songs but this my favorite by far!
Charlie Rich was so talented ,his RCA , Hi AND Sun recordings are amongst some of the best music to come out of America during the 1960's
April is so cool!
God bless you April. Rest in Peace.
Charlie Rich is as handsome as Elvis! Different style but equally gorgeous ❤
Thanks for sharing. This song will always be cool. Great memories.
loved this song to death when I was a kid..Never saw a video. I'm 62 now and just found this song again..The people are so cool and smooth
That video was from American Bandstand.
Fabulous! Charlie looks dapper and cool. What a voice, what talent and what a shame he had to wait until the 70's to get his dues.

I love Charlie's original & April's satire!!
Ms April Stevens gets fed up with clowning smart al-eck vain antics of Mike Love...piff that hat off....thank you for posting.
they say Elvis love this song and played it over and over again
Very interesting. Never knew she sang with anybody but nino. Thanks for sharing, proves she does have a special voice and talent. Thank you for sharing. Nino and April are one of my favorite. I'm 64 and remember them well.
April sang on her own in the 50s. I believe she is older than Nino, but there are some contradictions as to which year she was born!
She was gorgeous! Like a girl that lived down the street,Carol Kondas, in Savannah,Georgia 1963. Memories.
@@andythompson7725 April was born 4/29/29. Nino was born 1/6/35.

Excuse me: Walt Gekko?...Are you related to Gordon Gekko? Australian?Ha!
Yes you are right, I watched 'The Beatles Anthology' a couple of days ago and Paul said Mohair Sam was on Elvis's juke box, on repeat, when they arrived. It was their record of the moment too :)
We loved our big hair!
Sheri Weisbender 🐶🐒🐕💙💛💚

April Stevens in nice looking....nice smile too
Sadly, most people only know Charlie Rick for his late 1973-early '74 classic "The Most Beautiful Girl."
She was so hot and such a beautiful personality!
I could'nt have said it any better,Rob.
Very cool song liked by both Elvis and the Beatles.

I have to agree that he should have
had more popular success! I loved "Lonley Weekends" the best of his!
Do a You Tube search for April and you will find out she started out on her own in 1951 or 52! RIP sweet April 4/17/03@
thanks for rufus thomas(walkin the dog)....started the sound baby!!! benifited elvis in all those movies also..
One of Elvis Presley favorite records, so it is said.
Keep on, (like)!!
Great singer
I always thought April Stevens was super hot. All these years later, I can still see why.
What A COOL CAT is SAM
I grew up with Nino Tempo and April Stevens, playing on the console in the living room; my moms music. God, I miss her. 😔
Annie Markan did the french version :)
GO CAT GO!
Wow. What is the name of the show that Charlie sings on?
Shivaree
Yeah, unfortunately, the sound is really bad on my "original" copy of this clip, and it gets even worse when the clip is copied. But there still seems to be quite a bit of interest in the clip, even though the audio is highly suspect.
Nino can be heard doing some background vocals..but he does not appear in this video.
Lorah' I love lorah'...
LOL!
i m glad i dug the hell out of this song if Elvis Presley did
Charley Rich just too cool... part Elvis ain't he?
That kid with the glasses behind April Stevens looks like a young Elton John, I know it can't be because of the era but take a look.
John McGary That is thew young Elton..Looks like him, funny i dont know if he went to America back then though..
+John McGary I didn't see anyone but April.
Charlie looks like one of the Baldwin Brothers!
"No Hair Sam" is portrayed by a mannequin, not Nino Temple.
Haha! Nino Tempo eventually went bald!ha!
that mannequin looks like Ron Howard.
Who is the blonde guy. Looks like he was a host of a show.
I wonder if that's April's brother, Nino Temple, as "No Hair Sam?"
He kind of looks like one of the Baldwin brother!
Baldwin bros.? But they're all black-haired,except for the youngest.
Silver Fox
female point of view........ YES DEAR.
He knew how to profit from a song from Slim Harpo. Harpo sang it mo'betta
Could be now as Nino is practically bald.
But this is a great answer version to the Dallas Frazier song
april just quits lip synch'n at the end.. real smooth.
15 years old, and veey impressionable could have been worse
mario aranda 🐮🐶🐒🐕🦄🐺🐯🌸
@Alterofsacrafice NO!
Who is the blonde hair guy who is dressing when Charlie sings?
His name was Gene Weed and he's exactly like those "professional rakes" in high school and college. They dressed like English nobility, drove sports cars and all they did was pick up girls.
Charlie looks a bit like steven seagal
