Taking Apart The GPD Win! - Tech Wave!

  • It's finally time to take apart the GPD Win. This is one of the smallest full fledged laptops I have ever seen. Because it is so small, I am curious to see what is going on inside and how they are cooling the CPU and ram.

    i've seen other teardowns and pictures and i love how they did the shoulder buttons i dont like the placement but they feel nice and the way they have pressure contacts to the mainboard eliminating wires and allowing easy assembly and disassembly its funny that a chinese manufacturer thats relatively unknown is taking great care in the design of thier machines they keep getting better i'm sure the gpd pocket will be even better.

    hey there! i found out about the gpd win some weeks ago and couldn't believe at first that it exists, watched some good reviews and ordered it the same day - and i absolutely fell in love with it. i've got a steam library of 2000+ titles (mostly from bundles) and i am super excited to try out new titles on the road - especially graphically simpler ones, that i might give a pass on the big screen - which really payed off so far (e.g. ChrossCode or Galak-Z are extremely good). the general experience is surprisingly stable, steams in-home streaming works fantastic (if you want that) and playing great indie games on the go is superb. there are some limitations to keep in mind though:
    1. steam takes quite some time to load on boot and then you have to tell it to go into offline mode (when there's no wifi like in a subway etc.) - so it takes quite some time to actually start a game in steam - might be better to play those games without steam if possible, but then you have no cloud, achievements etc.
    2. not every game really works on a small screen. obviously RTS will be hard, but there where several games i tried and thought: big screen for sure. can't put my finger on it yet. small text is definitely a problem sometimes.
    3. the L3/R3 buttons aren't in the sticks but seperatly next to the keyboard. as a lot of games that use them are often action heavy, that can be a deal breaker for certain games. that was the case especially when i tried some newer AAA titles via in-home streaming - it just took too long to find the sprint button and Lara was dead already.
    4. there's quite an inconvenience regarding playing on the go: a lot of games will simply crash if you close the system while playing. it might help to turn off the win 10 lock screen, but i havent managed that. but it's quite annoying.
    other than that: it's really what you hope it to be. i was thinking about getting a switch - especially when i heared that it will support a lot of indie games. but i didn't regret my decision to buy the gpd win instead so far and probably won't in the future - as i won't have to buy games for huge amounts of money just to play them on the go now.

      I played team matches of age of empires 2 hd on my WIN and we won. No rpoblem for me at all XD
      And no slowdown even though it's in 720p with AA tuirned on and there were like 200 units on screen all fighting each other, over WIFI XD

    • @the_kindman
      @the_kindman 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      haha, thats quite impressive. but you have to admit, that it was an extra challenge, no? i'll admit that RTS are always way too stressful for me, as everything is happening all over the place at the same time. so the smaller screen and slightly slower mouse control didn't help me. but good to know that it's possible for pros;-)

    I actually brought one the day before yesterday and so far I'm liking it. The GPD win can be used like how you would use the switch, connect a mouse and a keyboard to it, hook it up to a TV with HDMI cable and I have a full laptop where can do photoshop and illustrator. I can also connect my PS4 controller to it and play emulator games and PC games on TV. What's more, I can take it on the go and play games with the built-in controller.

    SPAWN WAVE, thank you for your work, I've been following you daily for 2 months now. Great coverage and especially for the Switch. I take it the L/R 2 Buttons can not be removed from the Shell Housing correct? Want to do a 3D Scan of the bottom so I can make a new Shell to allow for a larger Battery, but the L/R 2 Buttons can not be Removed. The L/R1 Buttons are fine. Can pop out those no problem after removing the Circuit Boards for the Buttons.

    You should have done the heatsink mod while in there... which is just put a metal shim in so the thermal paste isn't so thick (which acutally conducts heat much worse than the the shim). They say doing that mode makes it about 10C cooler...

    Another great disassembly video. If I had but one complaint it's that your overhead camera isn't as clear as your main camera so the details aren't quite a clear when you're taking it apart. Otherwise, I really enjoy seeing this videos pop up in my feed.

    The memory heat pad looks like it's been randomly stuck on and like there should be 2 of them. Did you check to see if they still have that plastic film over the heatsink where the cpu makes contact with it?

  • @BuildProne
    @BuildProne 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I bet the cooling would be better if they flip the fan over so its pushing air onto the copper shim instead of pulling it off of it since there arn't any fins on it it kinda seams redundant to pull air off of it. And that leave to the next part taking the corner of a file and making some light runs over the shim under the fan to act somewhat as fins to help cool it better then also add a copper shim on the cpu and liquid metal on the cpu and inbetwene the copper plate and the shim. All those together should help cooling a but ton.

    Been wanting one of these, but haven't seen it much less than $400.
    I wonder if it is possible to underclock the CPU to get a little less heat and better battery life, but still be overall faster than the Bay Trail chip.

    Awesome vid!
    :D
    They just use cheapest fan though. Separetely I saw them sell replacement ones for 7 dollars. Shipped. :)
    and I believe different (batches of) wins have different brands of fans. So probably whatever is on sale that day in Shenzhen.
    But the unit works fine, is solid, and plays tons of great games like emulators, nfs underground, magicka, overlord, etc. really well so I am happy with mine. :D
