In this video I am going to take you through a day in my life as an instructional assistant (also known as a teacher's assistant).

Hello. I just stumbled onto your video and explain a good majority of things for but do have this question. Currently I work as a bus attendant at my local school district but just interviewed/hired for a teacher aide position in a elementary school in my district. So I am excited but nervous to start this new side of things in a public school setting. I have a early childhood education background combined with experience in school bus transportation as driver/attendant. So I guess what am asking what to expect for my first day in this new role? Is it going to be like a teacher's aide in a daycare setting/bus monitoring? Will post below this what my new boss gave as a description. Thank you for time and feedback to my questions. Hi Jess,
A teacher aides' duties include assisting the teacher in the classroom, assisting students and other clerical duties as needed for educational prep. The teacher aides do NOT assist in the cafe. And yes, 9-4 employees get lunch breaks and a crew time off etc. HR will speak to all that.

First things first, CONGRATULATIONS 🎉🎉!! That’s so exciting! I definitely think your experience as a bus attendant and in early childhood education will help you, especially with different interactions with the students.
The job description does sound generally accurate. Your first day (depending on when it is) will most likely be assisting in setting up the classroom/s and materials for the first day of school, learning their routines, and getting to know about the school and other staff.
If you’re starting on the first day of school, expect it to be a bit hectic lol.
You’ll be assisting the teacher (or teachers. I supported the whole second grade, but that depends on your school) with getting the students set up and prepared. You’ll also be assisting them with the daily routines. As the year progresses you’ll most likely be doing small groups with different students involving different topics and subjects.
All in all it IS similar to being an assistant teacher in early education just with more advanced topics. You may also experience more run ins with difficult behaviors in the classroom as the year progresses.

@@RachelBallard Good morning Rachel! Thank you for your kind words and feedback. The school I will be working in is K-3 grade. I have gotten some information about staff development days here in the end of August and then regular school start in September. I won't lie , I am a bit nervous but excited as well. Guess that is what everyone feels when entering a new phase in life. Truly appreciate your feedback because it helps in really knowing what I can except. All in all I just want to do a good job with this position and help wherever I can in the classes at my school. Will definitely touch base with you if anymore questions comes up. Today was my 1st time being an instructional aide & I must say why do you think so many teachers quit !?
I have to say that working as an instructional assistant has really opened my eyes to A LOT of what teachers go through and their daily struggles. I’m in college for elementary education and I’ve had several teachers encourage me to pursue a different degree which breaks my heart.

What is building account aide ? What’s their job description?
Is there only one instructional assistant at the school, and how many teachers do you/they work with? I'm on the verge of suggesting that our district implement such a program, but i havent found much in regards to roving positions that do less with students and more with supplies, organization, errands, etc.
There is an IA for every grade. I worked with five second grade teachers and assisted all of the second grade students. I helped with errands but I also did a LOT of small groups, guidance lessons, etc. Then there are behavioral IAs that are for the whole school. We had 4/5 of them. If there is a student with physical/mental needs then they had their own IA that only assisted them 😊
