Just harvested the 4 apples on my balcony! Thanks for showing how. Ruining the tree and those 4 apples I adored, loved, showed off to other people and spoke to every day would have been such a bummer.
I just plucked my apples in the backyard today off one tree. I filled up 2 18 Gallon totes and 2 15 gallon coolers. I knew mine were ripe because when I shake the branches or the wind shakes the branches a few would fall off. A ripe apple will want to fall off
Obviously if you’re harvesting off of a tree you’re going to have way too many apples to store in the refrigerator. What’s the best way to store apples other than in a refrigerator
The ideal storage conditions for apples are 32°F to 40°F with 90 to 95% relative humidity. For most home gardeners, the refrigerator gets us the closest to these conditions. If that is not an option or the entire crop does not fit, then find a location that is as close to those conditions as you can get. Some alternatives could be a root cellar, cool basement, cool garage, or cool pantry. The ideal conditions for apple storage can be hard to create without a refrigerator so if necessary, priority should be given to temperature over humidity. Ideally, you’d have cool and humid conditions, but if you had to choose, cool and dry is better than warm and humid.
