As long as you use a rope that is made of all natural materials, these would make great trivit mats and a matching coaster set

They certainly do, I have thump mat coasters scattered about.

You inspired me. 😄I followed along using paracord first and made a coaster for my wife’s desk. Then, using 1/8 inch cordage, a 3 lead hairpin. I teased it into a sort of cup, “fixed” it using clear polyurethane in order to retain the shape and make it water proof. For the actual “Pin” I cut and sanded a 3/16 inch diameter barbecue skewer before using the polyurethane on it. I don’t know how to send you a picture using the comments.

What size and kind of rope do you recommend to a full size mat

Damn good question mate! Rope for me is so expensive, so what I do is search eBay for old rope. That in a sense determines for me what size rope to use. Not very helpful, but just gives you some idea of what I do. However, here is a quick guide as to approximately what you will get with different sized ropes: goo.gl/V1zaUE This actually cam from Des Pawson's Book on Knotcraft which can be found here if you are interested: igkt-solent.co.uk/books/

great vid really like these is their anything you can cover it with to stop it falling apart when you move it ,and if you use thicker cord can it be used as a floor mat or are they totally different

When using smaller cordage, you can use a mixture of 50-50 PVA glue and water. However, the problem with that is some ropes, like the one in the video, are rather hairy. If you coat that with the PVA mixture you end up with barbs. I have seen it done where green felt is glued and used as a backing.
Thick rope is really great as a floor mat, I have a large Ocean Plait mat on my floor and it is wearing well.

Just to add to the above. In many cases you do not need to do anything, just try it out, if it then misshapes do something.

When we follow the original rope, you don't explain if we go left right with it. I see it goes up and over but when I take it beside it, it slips wrong, when I go under it , it pulls wrong. Pls do another vid, better explaining direction of second following rope. Thanks. Great idea tho.
