My school dress code is terrible! 2 years ago we were not aloud to wear ripped jeans, we protested. And now we can but it has to be fingered linked. As a boy who is attracted to girls I can confidently say that seeing a girl’s shoulders has never distracted me from class
At my school, girls can't wear tank tops, but boys can. Not just spaghetti straps, but also regular ones. This is both sexist to the girls and the boys.
So girls have shoulders. Big deal. So do boys. Why do we have to hide it and they don't? We can't control it. And as for the boys, it assumes that all boys are just looking for any opportunity to catch a peek at a girl's skin. I've seen at least ten girls wear tank tops around boys, and the boys didn't even notice. It's not fair to both genders.

As a straight teen who agrees with the dress code shoulders don't really distract me but I believe the rule was created to stop girls from crossing a boundary. Same with the collar bone rule. I as a middle school student was wearing a regular t-shirt and leggings and many other girls were wearing just what I was wearing and I had gotten school dress code on my FIRST week there. I had asked what was the problem and they had simply told me NOTHING about what had been the problem and they would write it up. This happened about near the end of school were literally nobody was paying attention to me or would see me as a 'distraction' when they were busy getting to class within the 5 minutes in crowded halls. Girls will probably not do that because schools and society already make us feel insecure and unsure of ourselves because whatever we wear is 'slutty' and a 'distraction'. They say It's too short. They say it is not appropriate for the weather as well even though they would rather have us wear sweaters in heat for wearing a t-shirt that is not too short or long either. What I do know very well is that you are uneducated and know nothing about this topic and how it has hurt girls from even just 11 years old. They just want girls to follow men's rules and believe their sayings of when 'we want it' and 'we are asking for it'. On the news in 2017 a SECOND GRADE girl who is about 10-11 wore a dress with a shirt that was only 2 finger strap. A YOUNG girl who has no intention of it? A second grade minor is a distraction? So I actually never thought about this again until now but in high school, my private school would punish dress codes by making the students do physical labor (taking out the trash, cleaning etc) in addition to missing class and walking across campus to the deans.
What I started to notice is that when I would wear what the other girls would, I would get punished. I’m 5’10 black girl, and I have long arms and that arm test was always used. My fingertips literally go past my knees lol. When I would point out that my white friends could wear the literal exact same thing, and never got a violation, I was told that I was more “tempting” and needed to take more precautions than her. When I pointed out that no one ever liked me, that I constantly got bullied and never had a boyfriend, where’s the temptation, she said:
“well we know what happens when we don’t stop these behaviors in “you guys” young. I’m just trying to help you avoid becoming another single black unwed mother. Let’s not play dumb like we don’t know how the world is. And don’t try to pull the race card. I’m trying to help.”
Intersectionality is important. Sexism and racism go hand in hand. This video reminded me of this time in my life and it came back like a flood, I remember every word, every expression. And I remember how I felt at the time. Conflicted, hurt, confused, defeated, embarrassed, humiliated and eventually numb, to the point that I blocked it out and moved on.
As a child I saw humiliated but as an adult All I see was the sexualization and dehumanization of a black child.

That principal is literally breaking the rules by picking on students and trying to ruin a child's property. She's also being sexist, and humiliating her in front of everyone. Also, I'm pretty sure that a principal can't just suspend someone on the spot for violating the dress code. They at least have to run it by someone first, I'm sure. (I could be wrong on that point though) And the principal can't just 'decide what's right' They have rules to follow too.
Superintendents are the highest rank you can get in school jobs, so superintendents make school rules (please fact check this)

In my middle and high schools, wearing thin straps was against the dress code, but that applied to both girls and boys. The schools had a fair dress code for everyone. That's how dress codes should be.

See, I think a proper dress code for both guys and girls, make sure their shorts aren’t showing their underwear or butt, make sure whatever shirt/tank top they wear isn’t too revealing, & ripped jeans are no problem, as long there’s no holes in the butt or front. Basically as long the clothes aren’t revealing a lot of areas that we shouldn’t see, these clothes are fine for them wear! I don’t see anything wrong with those clothes they have on!

@Ryan Stevens There is no legal grounds to sue the school as her rights were not violated. The school principal is in power to enforce new rules as the acting intendent of the school.

We had this here few years ago, 11 y/o girl got sent home for wearing shorts, and her mom got the whole class wearing shorts the next day. The next week she got sent home again, and that's was when the mom got to the news.

Honestly unless the outfit is truly "inappropriate" and reveals unwanted places, both genders should wear what they feel like. Amber's outfit was totally fine for her age. But society needs to be careful about what they put out into the world. This is really a complicated problem.
I agree. People should focus on life priorities more than outfits. If people look, that's their choice. You're responsible for what you wear, Not what people think about it.
