    thanks for the repair dave! This bass is great to have as a backup for smaller gigs and jams where a normal 8-11 pounder would be too much of a hassle

    • @Ndlanding
      @Ndlanding 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The weight of the bass is determined by the size/capacity??? Wow! I guess you would need a four-tonne bass to play a big festival. And a thick strap.

    • @Mgirald
      @Mgirald 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Ndlanding Danelectros are a very light bass in comparison to most other brands, they're second to Hofners as the lightest basses out there for the money. At about 6-7 pounds, there really is a difference having wearing this bass for long periods of time over something like your standard jazz bass. You can use danelectros for anything really, but I use it as a backup I can't be assed to bring my main bass around

      @@MichaelandCathy1999 Rinus and George started the band in '61 (just 15 and 13 years old respectively at the time). Singer Barry Hay joined the band in '68, drummer Caesar Zuiderwijk joined in 1970. I know this shit because these boys are from my home town. Played support slots for the Earring in the 90's, that didn't turn out a big success ha ha! We had some 'minor issues' with their sound crew. The replacement bridge should be on top of the screws, just like the wood-saddle one was.
    (I actually prefer the popsicle stick bridge. The intonation is good enough.)
    String options:
    D'Addario EXL170S rounds
    D'Addario EXL160S rounds
    D'Addario ECB81S flats
    La Bella 760-FL-S flats
    La Bella 760-FS-S flats
    La Bella 760-FM-S flats
    La Bella 0760-FD flats
    There are other La Bella sets (round, flat, others) that can be had in short-scale versions, and in fact I think most La Bella 4-string sets exist in short scale versions)
    Roto 66S rounds
    Roto 77S flats
    Roto 88S tapewounds
    I use D'Addario EXL170S for rounds, ECB-81S chrome flats, and La Bella 760FSS flats, depending on the bass and on the situation. The La Bellas are my favorite. They sound and play great, but ECB-81S sound a bit more like rounds. If I'm playing in a riffing rock situation, I probably want the D'addarios (round or flat, depending on the bass).
    I have 5 Danos. 4 of them are short-scale. I don't play anything else anymore. I like the sound and the light weight.

    Hi Dave, Love your Pod Cast, I have learned so much from you. I swapped out the original bridge on my Long Horn with a Shaller 3D-4 Roller Bridge as I found the original bridge left the G string too close to the edge of the fret board. and then to accommodate the flat wound strings I wished to use I installed a set of 6 string (only 4) of the Shaller machine heads, but first I enlarged the string holes in the machine heads. I also replaced the volume and tone knobs with Chrome Concentric Knobs. These mods changed the whole dynamics of the overall feel and tone of the guitar. For an amp I use a Harke 4 x 10 cab and a 1X15 cab. and a Hartke 2000 head. Love it.

    Tune in for guitar tech stuff and learn about string theory. Because SCIENCE! Hey Davey, that bridge is actually designed to sit on *top* of those two front screws. String tension holds the plate down, and the three screws all serve to keep the bridge in place under string tension. You can raise/lower the bridge by adjusting the three screws. That's why the screw holes are stepped (larger on the bottom of the plate).

    • @Mgirald
      @Mgirald 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's not a very good design though, the bridges are not made of the strongest material and are prone to bending like a banana under string tension

    Rinus Gerritsen of Golden earring is one of the best known players of those but he didn't use it for recording all that much because of that terrible bridge which made it impossible to get proper intonation. "Radar love" for example was recorded using a Gibson EB-3.
    But here's the story how the Danelectro became his main bass.
    In the mid sixties Golden earrings (they later would drop the S from their name) were signed by Track records in the UK where they would support their labelmates The who and it was when seeing the Who for the first time that Gerritsen got his revelation. Because back then Gerritsen played self made basses but was always on the search for the key sound.
    "The band came on and as they started playing I instantly stood up, not to applaud or go crazy but because my whole being was shook up by Entwistle's sound. That bell-like twang he got, how did he get it and how could I get this tone for myself?"
    And because back then getting info on instruments was difficult, it was all word of mouth in those days, it would take a whole lot of luck for Gerritsen to get his hands on a Dano bass and make that tone his own. Luckily when the band went to London to record their first album for Track, Golden Earring drummer Jaap Eggermont's eagle eyes spotted a Dano in a shop and providing a generous hand to his fellow band mate bought it and presented it to him in the studio.
    Gerritsen used his Dano all the way up to the late seventies when during an American tour, a thief ran off with it. Meaning that Gerritsen had to adopt an experimental instrument he had been working on as his main bass. This clip shows what he came up with.
    th-cam.com/video/_hEXVopJj9Q/w-d-xo.html
    Note that during the outtro he switches necks and the Dano twang is THERE in full force.
    These days Gerritsen has his own Signature bass by Vox Humana and again it's not really surprising that he stuck with what he's familiar with...
    www.voxhumana.nl/images/voxcms/rinus/RGL5/dsc00017.jpg
    Yup, your eyes are not deceiving you, he actually has a five string version.

    I used to be kinda hot for one of those bridge upgrades. But if you take a good look at it you can see why it's known on various forums as the P.I.T.A. (pain in the __) because the intonation screw is under the string and impossible to adjust unless you remove the string at least partially.
    I know it's not Dave's thing but I wish he'd done a before and after for the tone. Because the other thing I read is that the rosewood saddle is a big part of the tone of these guitars, would have been neat to hear the difference for myself even if it's only a youtube video.
    After 20 plus years of playing mine the bridge is starting to show signs of collapse. It's going to have to be replaced sooner or later. I'd love to hear folks thoughts on whether the upgrade is worth it or to just stick with the rosewood.

    The John Entwistle story is often misquoted, John didn't help invent roundwound strings, Rotos had been around for 3 years before The Ox told them he wasn't happy with the E & A string resonance. He did however get through 3 Danos trying to record the solo for My Generation because he kept snapping the thin strings, replacement strings were unavailable in the UK hence the need for multiple basses. In the end the solo was recorded using Jazz bass with flats!

    Nut: the original Korean reissues had plastic or bone nuts. Some (most? all?) later reissue basses have had an aluminum nut, which is what most or all fifties/sixties ones had.
    Guitar tuning machines work fine.

    I don't understand why manufacturers sometimes make decisions that create unnecessary headaches for buyers. They had to know choosing guitar style tuners would make it more difficult to buy suitable replacement strings.
