I'm a beginner/intermediate skater, and our bike paths are much more narrow where I live, so I do an almost one-sided stepping plow. Since I'm in the U.S. and we drive on the right side, I typically keep my right skate pointed forward pretty close to the right edge of the path and then take small, controlled A steps with my left skate. This gives your butt a REALLY good workout and allows you to go down steeper, more narrow paths very slowly (but faster than side-step) without ruining your wheels. If your butt gets tired then just stand like you're doing side-step for a moment to give your glutes a rest. This has allowed me to explore so many more areas since my city has narrow, hilly bike paths with hidden intersections and lots of winding blind corners.
I’m back n the game of blading after a 15 year hiatus. I’m 57 years old so it’s been a slow startup. I’m finding your videos soooo helpful! Thank you!! BTW, I’ve never seen inlines like yours with 5 wheels! What kind of skates are those and what are the benefits?
If I get it right these are Endless Arc frames. Usually 5 wheels are used for more stability and control. Professional downhill skaters use flat 5wheel setups a lot.
This was so helpful! I got out of control and a hill yesterday and it was scary. I feel better after watching your video. I’ll try these. Especially the turns!
this is so cute! I've definitely taken off my skates and just walked on hills or across streets before. no shame for us beginners! (okay, a little shame...)
I went down an extremely steep downhill once. It was a short one thankfully but I went down on it on worn out 90 mm wheels it was fun and scary at the same time. If you're not experienced as a skater avoid downhills.
this made me laugh so hard I cried! great tutorial of all the ways! I just got my first pair of blades and I’m so excited! What other tutorials do you recommend? (I’m pretty ok at it, I lose my balance now like maybe once a minute)
Hi Polly, I bought myself some rollerblades for my birthday last July after not having skated for probably 15 years, and just got them back out now that the weather has warmed back up. I’m not a super beginner, but definitely have some beginner “qualities,” so I’ve been trying to start practicing all the basics again. I was wondering though after watching this video, when going downhill with your feet straight ahead, why keep them scissored? Does that give you better stability? Thanks for all the great videos!
The only time I slow down on hills is if there’s a sharp turn at the bottom or an intersection with traffic lights 🚦. On my latest endurance workout, my route included a downhill section with some curves in the sidewalk. How did I handle the downhill? I just let gravity due the work while I adjusted my direction of travel as needed…and this was at night! Illuminated by my headlamp and the occasional streetlight. And yet, I didn’t crash.
Hills still make me nervous, but ive only had my inlines for a year and given that i live in the Midwest in a city with no rinks, my skating time is very limited. I know i wouldn't do any of this stuff (at least right now) without any protection, as in pads and helmet.
T stop is really good but not for the wheels..,thanks for this..,this is my first time having the roller blades..,thanks a lot for your tips.,and honestly your gorgeous., :)
@PollySkates Same. I just got the Arc ES. Still new to this cool niche. I'm rocking the mild rocker. They are pretty versatile. Besides flatland tricks I liked the way they responded on the ramps at the park the other day. Mix that with the way they steamroll bumps in the city and I would say it's a really cool setup!
Turn your shoulders and torso a little bit, it will give you the possibility to move one foot in front of the other. I have a detailed tutorial on my channel, btw
Nice tutorial. Caterpillar is great. I would rather say that it is begginer/intermediate . For advanced downhill you need to include magics and parallels. But anyway 👍
I thought I was pretty good at roller skates, until I moved to a mountanious city where my skills proved to be pretty useless. The sidewalk isn't wide enough to do anything else than sidestep, ot T, but that doesn't stop me completely so after the first incident where I almost crippled myself i gave up on it. You either have to manage a steep downhill, or skate uphill. Neither is much fun at all.
@@PollySkates I hang out with amateur skateboarders so we're mostly going down slopes on tar or pavement. I don't know what type of skating that is since I'm a beginner but I'm not doing fancy tricks.
Try it and find out ;) In all seriousness, you will gain so much speed and not be able to stop, and collide into something or someone and could seriously hurt yourself.
But if its narrow sidewalk
I talk about that!! I also have some short videos specifically talking about it lmk if it helps 🫶
I usually use t-stop. Soul slide is also a way.
@@NikZvioooh soul slide is a fun one
BEST way to STOP on rollerblades on a narrow path 🏞️ #skatingtips #rollerblading
@pollyskates Such amazing advice and so thoughtful to reply!! Thank you

I’m trying to picture how you did this but I’m having a hard time. Sounds like a super useful technique.
Is there a video of this? I cant picture it
I did the extreme method last night and that is why I am here.
Welcome! 🤗
The stepping plow is something I want to learn. My favorite and most used stop now (4+ years into my journey) is the soul slide.
Ooooh I LOVE that one!!! The stepping plow is nice on narrow hills 😄 remember practice is the best teacher! 🫶☺️🤙🙏
Step 1 being avoid it has me screaming 😂
Hills are scary! 🙈
"not today, not ever"

Thank you so much for the great training video on how to skate down hill. High quality content and very helpful instructions.

I usually just stick my srms straight out, bending at the elbows, and then aim for a tree or post. The arms absorb the impact and it looks hilarious!

Very well explained thank you for the video Polly

LOL! This is exactly why I bought the Powerslide Sycro - for little hills like this 😂.
Oh fun!!!

a plow stop is underrated in this video. It's quite useful unless the tarmac is wet.

Just send it... Its gonna be fine. You'll stop eventually.
Lmao
Someone will catch you😜
When I was like 7 I went down a steep hill and the only way I could stop was to dive into a patch of grass
wym
That would be a death sentence on a steep hill where i live LMFAO 💀
t stop seems to be the best way thx
Totally such a lifesaver on steep hills 🙌❣️🙏
Looks like a good place to blade 😎
I can't seem to figure out how to do the feet scissor part.
Turn your shoulders and torso a little bit, it will give you the possibility to move one foot in front of the other. I have a detailed tutorial on my channel, btw
The circles looked so fun!!
Would a heel brake also work for down hill?
Thanks for these great videos ❤❤
❤️❤️❤️ yesss heeel brake! Actually really fun to drag the heel brake down, I just don’t have one on my skates to show
Bro i just went down a hill and as person that hasn’t skated in 5 years I fell like 5 times. And now I’m here
Omgosh. Haha just crawl it out. Hills are scary! 🫣🙏
Welcome zach!!
would make a long form video about skating backwards? :)
Coming! ☺️🫶🤙🙏
"Today I'm gonna teach you how to go down the hill..."
"Go a different way."

Nice place ... Where is it ????
Manhattan beach!
If your going fast use heel break and slow down and repeat
Yessss 💯💯
Not me googling this and I was literally at the same beach . I just went down and took it for leap
I can go down hill now i am 😊

Morning!
The dump truck driver behind her:👁️👄👁️
The Caterpillar wouldn't work for a beginner that still has their heel brake on one skate.
🤔 I’ll have to try this! Thanks!
I wanted a buying guide but it seems like you won't be able to answer in time
Hi! What kind of skating?!
@@PollySkates I hang out with amateur skateboarders so we're mostly going down slopes on tar or pavement. I don't know what type of skating that is since I'm a beginner but I'm not doing fancy tricks.
The first 10 seconds are funny as crap😂😂
I can’t do the t-stop , I keep falling
Keep practicing!! I also have a long video specifically on tips to help with your T stop. Lmk if it helps 😁🙌🙏🫶
@@PollySkatesPolly how do I go down a ramp? I always fall down because I'm a beginner but I always end up in some sort of place that has a ramp
Just go full send and bail to stop! 😅
🙈
your shirt suits you!tale care sissy
I dont like the T-stop. My precious wheels, I am stingy. Just BOMB it :D
😬 id rather buy new wheels than be in the hospital
Anyone else coming to this video after doing a tuck and roll off the side of the road? No? K, well I'm off to learn about grass stain removal.
Oh no! Glad you had the grass to catch the fall tho 🤙
First day I skated I went down a hill steeper than this it was super scary. I don’t recommend what I did at all.
🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕
🙌
Why can't we just roll downhill if we are beginners?
Try it and find out ;) In all seriousness, you will gain so much speed and not be able to stop, and collide into something or someone and could seriously hurt yourself.
but why can‘t you just skate down😂
Too fast!
