    Legend says Park Ji Sung is still occasionally seen man-marking Pirlo

  • @pleasetredonme
    @pleasetredonme ปีที่แล้ว +195

    Ji Sung Park's discovery is crazier than summarized in the video. He was a good player since elementary school to high school. However, he wasn't THAT good. After graduating high school, he tried out for various K-League teams but no teams wanted him. Back then in Korea, most typical way into pro was by first going to university and performing well in the university football league. However, Park Ji Sung spent all his time trying out for professional teams after graduating high school and missed the timing for applying for any university. Basically, he had no where to go. He didn't pass any professional team's test and it was too late for him to apply to any university. He eventually found a university, Myeongji University, where the head coach of the football team really wanted him. But they already filled up the quota for that year and couldn't accept any additional student to play football. So the head coach "borrowed" 1 spot from the school's tennis team to get Ji Sung accepted to the university. So technically, Ji Sung would not have been able to play for Myeongji University if it wasn't for their tennis team that was gracious enough to give up 1 spot to the football team. But Ji Sung still was far from even dreaming about going professional. Myeongji University's football team was never a good team and Ji Sung himself never won anything with them. But one day, South Korea's Olympic U-23 national team was playing Myeongji University's football team as warm up game before the Olympic. This is where legend was made. Ji Sung Park came out of nowhere and started dribbling past everyone. He would run past entire midfield and defensive line and score like a boss. Up until then, no one knew who he was and the Olympic team coach wasn't there to add any more new players to his squad. But when he saw Ji Sung Park that day, he just had to have him in his squad. After the match, Ji Sung got a phone call from the head coach of the Olympic team. When he was asked to join training session for the national team, Ji Sung didn't know he was being asked to join the Olympic team. He was just happy. So the Olympic team coach asked Ji Sung "Do you even know which team I am talking about? I am asking you to join the Olympic team."
    But even after the Olympic, Ji Sung Park wasn't exactly known and he was just another football player. J-League(Japan) was and still is a level below K-League(Korea) and Ji Sung Park going to J-League was hardly a news worthy. It's like if Burnely FC's youth player made it into Hannover96 or something like that. That's why it was controversial when Guus Hiddink called him up for the 2002 World Cup team. Ji Sung Park was never A-match National team worthy. There were many others that frequented the National team and performing better in other club teams. But Ji Sung didn't disappoint Hiddink. Ji Sung scored a game tie goal against England and another goal against France next game before the World Cup. This silenced everyone that was complaining about Hiddink's decision to play a "nobody."
    In summary, most people in his situation probably played football till high school and became a PE teacher or something. Everything was against him becoming a professional footballer let alone a Manchester United legend. As much as his hardwork ethic should be appreciated, we cannot ignore all the important coaches and managers in his life that saw the potential in him.

      No coach wants these kind of players especially as a winger or attacker in general. They want a dancing queen like Sancho and Antony. Modern coach seems doesn't understand to utilize players like Park and Dirk Kuyt. They might just turn them into a DM, sad.

    Andrea Pirlo sometimes wakes up in the middle of the night, cold sweat on his chest and forehead. He looks around nervously, and there, in the dark corner of his room, a silhouette watches him. It must be Park, silently watching him. But when Pirlo turns on the light, there is nothing. "STOP HAUTING ME" Pirlo screams but there is no answer, no sounds but his own. But when he turns off the light and lays on his side, he feels it, the breath on his neck.

    Another great video from you. Cheers. I just added a sub from my primary account and will comment from here...
    I always marveled at his capacity to just-play-football as he really could play anywhere on the pitch and be successful. When healthy his work rate, defensive capabilities, and lack of selfishness meant that he was often tasked with tracking back rather than pushing forward to make goals/assists, but he skill here is also under appreciated. He must have been a managers dream in that he could really play anywhere, and you knew he wasn't going to get tired or slouch on defensive duties while also giving the team the capacity to sub one of his mates and have the option to move Park to the subbed role or keep him as-is. Likewise, he could help push to score when needed but excelled at defense to defend a lead.
