I remember being glued to the television watching this when I was 9. Seeing a gal on drums made me feel like I could do anything. I later became a professional trumpet player. She inspired so many little girls like me.. Her spirit lives on. Thanks for the music, Richard.

I was 8 years old in 1971. To this day I still can't believe a voice like Karen's was possible. It was just perfect and no one sung like her then and especially now. She was a one of a kind talent. I'm just glad i was able to experience yours and her music in my lifetime. Thanks Richard. And God bless your sister...

👍 Simply perfect. I get the chills when Karen descends down into her lower register.

I just listened to your interview with Graham NOrton in 2018. I think you were definitely right about your image. Probably initially it helped to sell your albums and get you some notoriety. However I think it probably made a lot of people including me ...sorry to say... stay away from "seriously" listening to your music back then and even up to recently for me as the image seemed "light" weight. Your initial "marketed" image is probably getting in the way of being appreciated more these days.. How I changed my view is, I don't know why ..but just about a month ago I clicked on the Superstar video from the BBC live session in 71 and was simply blown away. Seeing Karen perform did it. It was real not just some pop fluff. She was singing from her heart and showing real emotion. You can't fake that. The music just underscored that brilliantly. I don't know how I ever missed that song originally. Then I started going back and listening to other songs such as this one ....and especially some of the Beatles covers. At first I thought Ticket to Ride was a bit cheesy ...but I keep listening to it more and more ...and it keeps growing on me. I think as that goody two shoes ( or 4 shoes) image dissipates it becomes clearer and clearer as you state here that Karen ( and you behind the scenes) should be held in a different context. I agree totally!!! I think now I have a way better appreciation thanks to my nephew as well. He is a lot like you ....started playing the piano very young and wasn't interested in any of the really modern music. He liked Cole Porter and that era of song writing and writes original lyrics and music in that vein along with musicals and farces. He has already worked with Henry Krieger on a short musical where he wrote the lyrics. Anyways...the point is I have learned a lot about the American Musical Tradition and songwriting through him. From Yip Harburgh to Rogers and Hart...Rogers and Hammerstein ...and with so many others. I think that is where the Carpenters should be listed under I believe now. I think the project with the London Philharmonic goes aways to bring that to fruition. Another idea... I was just driving in my car today and thought ..Nowhere Man or Solitaire ..or possibly many other Carpenters songs could fit easily into a movie soundtrack. Not just some cheesy movie but something with depth and being very selective. I always like the Sergio LEone movies with the Ennio Morricone soundtracks. Once Upon A Time In The West is a really good example. Blade Runner with Vangelis. Gladiator with Hans Zimmerman. Certain points in those movies where the scene and the acting and the music all merge into one. It leaves quite an impression. I think you get the picture..and you probably have way better ideas than me for sure!!!
That too would bring people like me ... (Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Doors, Pink Floyd listeners back in the day) to take notice and really listen to your music..especially if the emotional scene and story in the movie can even come close to the emotional depth of Karen's singing and your orchestrations. Just an idea!!! I think The Carpenters should be held in that esteem. Karen singing with Ella Fitzgerald and the joy on both their faces says it all. Thanks from Canada!!!! Oh yeah ...maybe new album covers too!!! lol (End of my essay!!)
