Father Stephen, thank you so much for your words about anxiety and praying the prayer. That was so freeing to me to hear about it's okay to be flexible and change your rhythm or words if you become anxious.

Thank you for this! There is a LOT of noise out there and fear is palpable. ICC is where I have found my sanctuary with Jesus Christ. The way, the truth and the life.

In The Book, the priest’s confession, ‘ I do not believe in God…, …,’ is absolutely a thing of beauty. The wonderful irony is that the pilgrim, finally, here at last, believes that he will here the confession of a true holy man, ll…who essentially has little to confess…so possibly just much worship and thanksgiving. As the priest confesses all his many
sins and failings, the pilgrim is shocked into a new reality, reassessing his own state and the pride therein.
Please forgive give, if I have misinterpreted the passage. Unlike Fr Stephen, I have read THE WAY OF…. only once.
I frequently fanaticize that, somehow, I have found a way to move to Fr. Stephen’s town and can become a member of his parish. I know such a Parrish thing life would include much patience-routinely missing Fr Stephens’s immediate presence, as he travels the world to gather Every would be Orthodox Christian he can find.
I have no idea how he does what he does, but then that’s kind of a stupid remark as we all know from Whom his strength comes.
Fr Thomas H. was/is just THE BEST!

REMEMBER too the pilgrim spent most of his time alone in the forest ,saying this prayer.

I prefer the wooden beads - I don't like the feel of the rope.

Not religious but quite interesting, especially the mistaken latin translations.
    Thanks!

like u I read it so many times , but disagree with u, I think it is genuine and happened , why? Because each story . is full of twist and turns ,unpredictable, and very detailed just like it really happened.

It did happen! The Russian OC found the Monk in the book! He was a real heiromonk. Theee were actually TWO monastic pilgrims in the book, but they blended the two stories together. It’s amazing! I think his name was heiromonk Averky? I may be incorrect on the name, but I do feel “the Pilgrim’s’ literal presence often.

It could be that the Jesus prayer is amalgamation of the publicans and the blind man's prayer but changed a bit. Probably they serve to show us how the quality of the prayer should be, like, it is uttered in privacy of ones heart or room or in mind the publican) while the poor man shows us how fervent it has to be but without any kind of murmur or euphoria, so to speak. Also O am an Orthodox Christian and I never heard that Hail Mary can't be used it before as it makes your soul and brain more concentrated.
