Jim is 100% correct. I had lost interest in pro-wrestling between 1992-95, but in 96, while still in high school and the Monday Night Wars heating up, I tuned in all of the time. Triple H was always referred to as Hunter Hearst Helsmley when he had the "blue blood" gimmick and only on a rare occasion would Shawn Michaels refer to him as Triple H on camera once they were programmed together following SummerSlam 97. It was always strange to me once they had Hunter going with the Triple H moniker officially. To this day I still think of him as Hunter first.

Kane was a long time employee who had proven worth with the company. RVD was over as hell, the only person to get over from the Invasion storyline and one of the top merch movers at the time. Booker was booked in a story where he would look lesser if he lost at WM19 and that's exactly what happened and it took years for him to regain a main event position.

      @@yoitsSmitty2004 Rock should've lost at WM16.
The company was trying something new, starting a new legend. This was the first time WWE was making a heel champion the franchise of the company, copying a NWA model.
Heels are major draws also. Hence Gorgeous George, Freddie Blassie, Ric Flair.
Rock had his WM main event the year prior at 15. He was getting babyface reactions Dec 98 in spots and it was VERY noticeable February 1999 during his Corporation time. Austin already won at 14 vs HBK. Rock should've won at 15.
WM16 was HHH'S time. He kicked the year off with bangers at RR, and NWO, WM was the trifecta.
Rock had his moment late 98 through summer 99 establishing himself as a top guy. Check. The spring/summer 99 was his confirmation he could replace Austin as the top face if needed.
So now 2000, pun intended was "my time" for HHH. And it paid off dividends. He could work with anyone and raised everyone's game.
Rock beat all the heels already. You have him beat HHH at WM too, WCW is back in the driver's seat with a chance to recover.
Because no one poses a belieavable threat for fans to stay invested in Rock. No enemy worth getting energized to see eventually take Rock out.
Rock beat Holly, Venus, Mr. Ass, Bulldog, Show, Undertaker, and now you're having him beat HHH who just survived a brutal street fight and HIAC, things Rock never did. That's dumb.

The thing is HHH during his absolute prime in 2000/2001 was never on a card that didn't also feature Austin, or Rock, or Taker, or even Angle. I think it goes without saying without these guys to play off of, he wouldn't be that big of a star during this time. HOWEVER, these guys also needed a strong heel to go against and no one fit the bill more than HHH. In 2000, you could've had Foley/Rock, Jericho/Rock, Taker/Rock, etc., but none of those feuds would just click as perfect as HHH/Rock did.
So to discredit Hunter completely from being a draw is a disservice.
The argument really is that while being a big star, HHH was never over enough to draw a strong house completely on his own. As in put his name on the poster and write "and bunch of other guys" and you won't sell as much tickets as when you put Rock's or Austin's name on the poster and write the same follow-up "and bunch of other guys". But you'll sell tickets, that's for sure.
As for being legit draw on his own, he really can claim that on the following occasions:
    1) MSG return in 2002
    2) RR 2002 which also included Rock, Austin, true but in this single case HHH was the bigger draw IMO, fair and square
    3) WM 21 - not on his own entirely, but the whole Batista deal was impossible without Evolution and HHH, he's earned this draw.
    I think that's it.

I remember when Triple H came out and said "I AM THE GAME!" in I think it was 1999 with the interview with Jim Ross and I always felt that was the time that Hunter Hearst Helmsley was dead and "Triple H" was born. You can't deny that Paul Levesque changed up his (no pun intended) game factor when it was time, I mean he had that monster heel run in 2000-2001, he came back as a huge babyface in 2002 - remember that huge pop he got when he came back at MSG in January of 2002 and they had Undertaker who had just recently turned heel stare down the newly turned babyface in Triple H, Triple H won the Undisputed title to a huge pop then he decided to turn heel around Summerslam of '02 which reinvented himself because we all thought "shit, here we go, D-Generation X is back", then Triple H did that pedigree to Shawn Michaels in the ring basically turning heel that night, even Jim Ross had those quotes in commentary, even to the part where Flair was paired with Triple H, then Evolution came along and had the rise of Batista and Orton and Triple H reinvented himself with the whole "I'm now jealous of these two bums, they were meant to be in the midcard, now they're world champion, I should be world champion!", then '06 he reinvented himself again where he shaved his beard to look like Motorhead's Lemmy style handlebar mustache with the "King of Kings" gimmick where at Wrestlemania 22 he came out and did the whole Conan The Destroyer gimmick entrance and then obviously turning babyface until I think it was 2013 with the DX 2.0 stuff.
I will say that I do think Triple H shouldn't have had that many title reigns, BUT, I can understand since if you look at a few of them, they were mearly there to put the newer guys over - Roman Reigns, Batista, Orton etc.

Osw review did remind us of the very brief period where they tried to shorten his name from Triple H to just "Tri"

Without the kliq and Stephanie, he never becomes "the game" and remains a mid carder for a good while longer. He still probably wins the title eventually once he goes on steroids but it takes him a lot longer.

To be fair nobody knows how much money one could draw with the entire weight of the promotion's promotional power behind them.
Solo Triple H had a ceiling. Triple H the son in law had that ceiling raised so much higher.
When you can yell at the magazine people or video game company for showing you in a submission hold because it makes you look weak, tear up notes because you're booked to lose (but am I going over?), etc, you aren't really able to be judged in the same way as everyone else.

@@LeemWills yup, he was also secretly dating the boss's daughter around that time.. they also booked him and a buddy to spend an entire raw beating up the entire roster at least twice, about a decade a part. That's a level of sustained push nobody gets.

none of my business either way, just adds up to why people feel like Triple H was given the means to overachieve in a way nobody else has, so he is who he is in wrestling. With the same level of push, other wrestlers may have been able to achieve more. Never got the chance.

People who feel that way are disgruntled ex employee; or fans who don't like him who believe shoots from disgruntled ex employees and dirt sheets who are paid to push a false narrative in a shoot style for website clicks and dvd sales.
HHH was and continues to be an ambitious, hardworking guy completely engaged in and passionate about the business: inside and out. He was that way LONG before he knew Stephanie. Which is why Vince liked him, invited him into his circle, and Shane told Stephanie to "marry someone like him."
His success is independent of his relationship with her. Thankfully, with Undertaker's blessing, HHH stopped caring about the 180° some members of the locker room gave him who discredited his accomplishments a long time ago. And he never looked back. Plenty of people considered other people's favorites (Undertaker, Jericho, Austin, Rock, Angle)- his peers actually in the trenches with him day in, day out-not writers, not smarks, the actual wrestlers-Hall of Fame guys-have all said on numerous occasions, HHH is one of the greatest of all time. They too, are made men, and have nothing to gain by saying those things. That's how they genuinely feel.

Triple H was definately THE guy, it was just at a time when THE REAL GUYS were gone. And then anyone who came up who might potentially take that spot as THE guy from him, he buried, right up until the Rise of Cena.

They gave it to Benoit and he couldn’t draw flies. HBK didn’t want the belt. At the time you had a bunch of guys getting injured left and right. That along with Rock,Austin,Goldberg and Lesnar all leaving Vince behind. Triple H was the safest choice.
