    After a 20 year absence from the hobby.I was looking for a fantasy rule system (which allowed my 20 year younger imagination and huge unpainted pile of shame,fantasy and historicals in 15mm, to 'work' together).
    I chose Fantastic Battles as well,the army builder is such a clever clever system you could even use your 6mm fantasy armies to fight your 6mm Roman/Ancient Britons(with or without fantasy elements).

    Lovely vid! I was a bit surprised to see you say you'd not run across 18mm before; it's been replacing 15mm for a while now. That said, there's also 10mm (e.g. Pendraken) and 12mm (Victrix) and Warlord have a proprietary scale that's something like 13.5mm. They've got starter sets for Napoleonic and ACW gaming. Not my bag as I'm too heavily invested in those periods in other scales. Love Baccus 6mm. They are just grand. :)

    sweet project! nice to see the "warband" and "fantastic battles" get some recognition. i've tried and much enjoyed both systems. Ended up with 40×40mm wide bases at 10mm scale and 40x20 with 6mm scale minis.
    i think square bases are best so that monsters and warmachines can fit. rectangular only really works for infantry and cavalry

  • @RoseKindred

    Oh wow, I did not know there were so many other small-scale figure companies. We need more of these companies easily available in the States. LGS here basically just carries GW because those are the movers.

    • @lukehawksbee
      @lukehawksbee 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This isn't even half of them: Irregular, Heroics and Ros, Scotia and Grendel, Rapier, Grumbler and more, without including the 3D printing side, and that's only companies that do historics (though several of them also do fantasy and/or sci-fi, there are a fair few that only do those genres and no historics). Oh, and those are only the ones that do 6mm, not those that only do 2/3mm, 10/12mm, or anything else you might count as small-scale (the inclusion of 18mm in this video would suggest 15mm would count too, and there are a fair few suppliers of that).

    Really looking forward to this series. Never played a small scale mini wargame. Back in the 90's me and some mates almost jumped in to Space Marine but went with Warhammer Fantasy instead. Always wondered what the small scale games would feel like as the ranges seem to makes more sense.

    Alternative Armies produce a fantastic range of stuff in 6mm, 15mm (18mm to top of head) and 28mm including fantasy, sci fi and historical. They also do starter packs with armies, vehicles and rules books. They’ve been around for decades, I remember our local model shop in the late 1980’s had as much space given over to the Alternative Armies Ion Age sci fi range as they did to GW stuff.

    My number one recommendation for small scale sci-fi would be Gruntz 15mm (you can play in other scales, its just part of the name). Its a great, easy mini-agnostic sci-fi game with a great activation system, particularly if you use the proprietary cards (which isn't necessary). There is even an app to design/print unit cards.
    |'ve also been playing Bolt-Action at 15mm since I started playing, and it works really well at that scale, the movement and weapon ranges feel great at 15mm with no changes from the book/rules.

    Great to see small scales covered as I’ve used 6mm and smaller (spaceships / ships) for over 40 years now. I am surprised at the inclusion of 18mm? 15mm used to be the ‘standard’ so I’ve never considered it small (10mm is the start of small scale for me). I get that you are trying to cover ‘systems’ like dropzone but I think you might miss a trick (especially with scifi / fantasy) and many of of the rulesets are miniature agnostic, and many of the most extensive and awesome manufacturers like GZG and Brigade have really lovely, reasonable and far more extensive miniature ranges that can cater to almost any game

    I cannot recommend the WW2 systems from TooFatLardies enough. Chain of Command for platoon size, I Ain't Been Shot Mum for company size, and O Group for battallion size all have amazing play experiences, and I think mainly due to emulating friction. It's not everybody's cuppa, but they make decisions in the heat of battle actually matter, and your army list/composition is less relevant. They make systems for a lot of eras that are also bopping, such as Infamy, Infamy for Roman antiquity. My current fav non-historic small scale game is Warmaster Revolutions. It has a small amount of friction while still being IGOUGO. It suffers a little bit from being basically fan-created, fan-curated and fan-developed in a committee as it means a small number of people have a lot of influence on the design even though some of the choices might be split down the middle in the community. It's a niche of a niche of a niche so I guess I'm happy it exists at all. And don't forget about all the great modellers that do STLs for 10mm and down!
