Subfloor Installation for my Off grid Home. Plywood vs OSB?

- Laying down a solid and correct subfloor is paramount to having a living space that is both sturdy, professional looking, and welcoming.
I was quite sure I made up my mind to use plywood as my material of choice. Watch to see what I chose in the end.
For those who asked I create an amazon wish list here it is:

Please note: With large products Amazon will mention they cant deliver to me but that is not correct. They will fill the order anyway and any deliveries go to the main post office nearby!
Some folks choose paypal for support.

Don the best tip I'll ever give you put house wrap all over the top of your floor and staple it down good build the entire job after painting and drywall and painting go around and cut all the inside paper out from the stud line and you'll have a brand new clean floor just like you have now before you started you'll never have to clean the floor don't worry about it just got the paper off and then each room when you're done after painting
That will also help keep the rain puddles from finding their way between the OSB seams into the airspace above the insulation.
Great suggestions. Thanks!
Don. Well done on the weatherproof flooring material.
Yep loving this stuff Brian.
You've got to be... "One tired Puppy" at the end of the day, Don. It's really taking shape and wonderful workmanship at that! Stay safe and rested! "Full Steam ahead!" Great video! Veteran "Charlie."
Yep I definitely feel like I did something LOL. But then for some odd reason my ol physique thrives with that type of thing. Thanks as always Charlie!
@@affordabledesertliving3487 Nothing like staying active and accomplishing! I myself thrive when working outdoors, hiking. Or just being outside. Have a great week! Namaste. Veteran "Charlie"
Love the double joist where subfloor meet Don, great idea!
Thanks Gordon. It just made sense considering the importance of a solid floor structure.
HAHAHA! We DEFINITELY want to see the dance! 😆
Hmm. It definitely could happen.
As usual Don, you are doing a wonderful job. Loved the singing and dance at the end. We all need some of your positivity 😊 Graham and Tim 🐕
How kind Thanks so much!
Congratulations on completing the most difficult and important part of the build. Your foundation and floor look very professional and something you should be proud of.
Wow thats so encouraging. Thank you!
Oh my goodness, I was feeling the heaviness of pushing those boards around while watching you! Thanks for sharing this type of board, I didn't know about it. I think you made a wise choice. Good job Don, and the best part, was watching you dance and hearing you sing 🥰🥰if you take the time to rejoice in success and happiness, well that is time well spent 🥰🥰 So walls, eh? Let the adventure continue ! Thanks Don for taking us along, have an awesome week! (And thanks for showing how that glue gun cleaner worked👍)
Thanks as always for your insightful and lovely comments Martha!
“Two cans… Not the bird Toucan…” 😂
Only a bird nerd would make that joke. 🙌 😉
I’m SO glad you’re making good progress, Don! Looking forward to the next video about the walls. 😊
Thanks so much Helene!
Congratulations! The “happy dance” was awesome. 💕💕💕💕
Thanks Judy! LOL.
Hi Don! I know that when you are happy, I am happy. One of my Nemises is the fear of making mistakes because I get mad at myself. I learn from you. Can't wait for the walls to go up. We're rooting for you.
Thanks Morten for your lovely encouragement. I loved the pic you sent of the beautiful cabin in Norway.
You're a bloody nutter Don, but we love y'a.
Good work mate.
Thanks Kezza. Yep nutters both in Aus and here happen LOL.
You're welcome.....stay hydrated...... warmer temperatures are coming!!
The birds in the background sound awesome!
Yep was in high 80s today. Thanks ever so much!
Now that is definitely progress!
Taking shape garegardner. For sure!
Hell of a good job, bravo!!!
Wow lovely comment Peter! Many thanks.
Well done! Obviously you did your research on building materials. So much advancement in the last few years with so many great new products. Thanks for introducing us to Advantech!
You are so welcome Mike! Research research. Definitely my motto.
Great job, Don. always enjoy your videos. Sing and dance all you want😊
LOL. Yep I have been known to sing and dance a bit for sure.
Happy happy day 💃🕺🏽💃🕺🏽🎸🎸🎸 Great job👍👵🏻👩🌾❣️
Even though that flooring (OSB) manufacturer claims that their product can withstand some moisture it may be a good idea to treat it with some kind of deck treatment just to be safe. You could spray it on with a sprayer.
Thanks for the tips John.
Not needed. Advantech can withstand a *lot* of moisture.
Glad to see you’re enjoying the fruit of your hard labor!
So appreciate you watching the vids!
Hi Don, I bet you sleep well after a day like this!
Yep no question Gary. I tend to thrive on rigorous outdoor work so am loving it actually.
Everythings looking good Don,
Thanks ever so much Richard! Appreciate you watching.
Appreciate your enthusiasm and hard work!
Thank you so much for that Jasper. All the best!
Great progress! Love when you give the "why" during your videos. Keep dancing, singing, and celebrating your progress
Thanks so much for watching!
I am leaving a comment here. So there!

Simply love your progress on your cabin build. Always look forward to your videos~!🌵🌵
Many many thanks for faithfully watching.
Great job...
Many thanks David!
Wow, my friend! Great job! In addition to ornithology and construction, you also have a possible future career in Broadway theater singing & dancing!!
Thank you Ed! Wow so encouraging. So appreciate you.
Outstanding Don! It's WONDERFUL to see you making such great progress on your home!!! I did a happy dance for you! Congratulations!! :D
Thanks Michelle. I think I am better at disco than ball room by the way LOL.
Great job I can wait to start my cabin
Fantastic! I hope it turns out super!
Nice work, Don! The subfloor is a major milestone. The place is really coming along!
Thanks so much Mark. Be fun if you came back to see it when it was done.
Congratulations on reaching the flooring milestone! 😀
Thanks ever so much. Super excited here.
Glad you got advantec! good stuff
Good job with the other joist to get full bearing!
Yep didnt know anyone who did that one but so glad I made that decision.
Good job!
Thanks Lonewolf. I still remember what an encouraging time I had meeting you in N.B.
you are kicking butt Don. wishing you the best.
Thanks Calvin. Excited here for sure.
I'm very impressed with your building skills!!😊
Thanks Jasper. I call it my 1200 sq ft birdhouse. I have built 100s of those so maybe that helps LOL.
@@affordabledesertliving3487 Ha Ha, I guess you could call it a "snow bird" house 😁
Good on you Don your doing great your 2 yrs older than me but your so fit great job on the sub floor you did ok to me love the happy dance
Thanks Kriss. Yep ... come dancing... as the song says.
Good choice.
Thanks Rex. Very happy with the results so far.
Don ? Here's a tip for you. After you finish with that adhesive for the day. Take the nozzle off and spray some WD in it and spray the some in the top of the can too . That way, when you are ready to use the glue the next day it won't be hardened inside.
BTW. You are doing a great job.
OH WOW!
They sent a can of cleaner for the gun. How cool is that.
Yep that cleaner stuff is serious for sure and works great!
Looking good Don.. coming along very nicely ! 😁👍
Thanks so very much for watching Paul!
Just found your channel...good for you!!! Keep going forward. As one who lived off grid in southern NM in the mid 90's, i know the struggle is real. You're an inspiration thank you
Thanks so much and hope you subscribed. Welcome!
That`s amazing Don .It`s only now that we get to see the scale of the big house and it`s looking very impressive. As always you have done a great job with it.. It`s a credit to your unwavering determination and your ability to have a go at just about anything. I`m really enjoying being able to view the whole process .You can dance if you want to even though you are a man with a hat.
LOL. Yeah love that song from men without hats. Thanks Graeme.
What a milestone. Big big congratulations!
Thank you Dirk. Was looking for new vids from you on your channel but think I watched them all. Thanks for watching.
Thumbs Up
Thanks Tom. Havent seen for a bit. You have been missed.
Good job young man - yes I’m a decade older then you and still living the life. I too love to build things. It takes twice as long to get started and three times longer to get it done - but - we do.
Way to go bud. Glad to hear you are still active and enjoying life and thanks for watching!
Nice subfloor Don. I used 3/8 in plywood bc l had seen it used in previous projects ld been involved with in prior. No squeaks. This does look like a super product you used though.
There are DIY projects on youtube and affordable tools you can purchase to pop that dent out on your car. Thought ld mention it. Poor car!. ( l actually did it. Looks respectable).
Cheers have a great weekend!
Wow yeah poor old toyota pickup needs bodywork and care for sure.
Don, looks great. maybe a bead of caulk into all the seams will help ensure rain can't get below your subfloor. It would be hard to dry out those air spaces.
Thanks for the suggestion Eric!
The wind is enough to drive the best of us nuts! Good on you for keeping on, gives me the motivation to figure it out for myself too! Best of luck out there Sir!
Thanks Joseph. Yep I get pretty grumpy in heavy winds, but the show must go on.
So glad the floor is done, excited to start seeing the walls go up! I’m loving the progress being made!
Super excited here as well.
Great Job!! Enjoying all your videos. Your dance made me laugh. Congratulations.
Thanks so much Ed. Tickled you enjoyed the dance.
Good Stuff. I love the project so far, thanks for sharing.👍
Thanks Alex. Lots more to come.
Getting it done and it will be great!❤
Thanks so much Sherry.
Subfloor turned out 👍
No question! I am loving it.
Congratulations Don in tackling what is, in reality, a major project. Your perseverance in getting the base ready speaks volumes about the way you have thought things through, and in adapting to what is a more than difficult section of the works. Well done from across the Pond.
Many thanks for watching from the UK !
DON ‘ I think I’m just as excited as you are !!!! You have been an inspiration to me for a few years. Tomorrow I’m having a road cut into the property, and having a couple of acres cleared so I can put in the septic, and get a building permit, and a RV permit. I am so looking forward to seeing the walls go up on your home. Till next time. Be safe .
Very encouraging Oscar. Major congratulations on your off grid move and goals for a building permit etc. Thanks so much for faithfully watching the vids!
@@affordabledesertliving3487 I have a 16’ x72” dual axle trailer if you ever need help. You ever break down your car will fit on top no problem. Great for hauling lumber, concrete, corrugated metal roofing……….
Nice work don , screws are only what I use on everything, hopefully your weather nice
Me too beach. I am trying to convert as many "nail people" as I can LOL.
Thank you for sharing so much knowledge and experience with us newbies. I also enjoy your sense of humor. I just bought property down the road from you. Very excited!😁
Your very welcome. All the best!
Hmmm ❤❤
Thanks for watching.
Congratulations on your progress. I'm a retiree in Michigan working on a similar project. I enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much for coming by and so delighted you are enjoying the videos.
I am amazed that you do all that work yourself. You are a dedicated person and you have a goal and it will be accomplished. Way to go. Again you are amazing. Be careful. Take care.
Thanks Rutha. Trying to be careful as I enjoy this build.
Glad you got it done
Me too! Thanks for watching.
20:31 Nice for you! Very nice.
Thanks for watching Dallas!
Nice job Don I've been watching your videos I really like them I'm 63 years old and I'm in the process of buying some land here in Arizona and putting me a tiny Graceland portable building on it I'm very excited I can't wait to get started
Fantastic! Shed to home is definitely the way to go. I did that with my little cabin. I am building my own large cabin to save some money and of course enjoy the experience.
Don I a so glad you danced didn't think you would laughed so load neighbors heard e lol!!! Great single-handed job!!!
LOL. Hope the neighbors werent bothered... ha ha. Thanks so much for the encouragement.
That looks great mister man
Thank you ever so much. Many blessings.
Good job, Don! We are about 2 hrs north of you, one of these days I'll head down that way and check out your favorite ice cream spot and the area. Four acres sounds about right, but would love to find like more minded individuals to be that close together.
Yep Sammy and Julies continue to offer me my favorite Ice cream treat when in Sierra Vista.
Great video Don! I enjoyed watching.
Always great to see you here and thanks!
Fine work!!!!🎉 Goodonyas!
Thanks so much mate.
GREAT Job Don!
Thanks ever so much for watching.
How exciting! Perfectly level!
Yep I did my best to keep everything level as I went but even so I am super blessed it turned out like this.
You can can that toucan, sorry :-) wow, the floor looks big and it is dead level! Congratulations!
LOL yep a joke not to be repeated. Yes delighted with the level aspect.
Great job and great progress
Thanks so much Fred!
Hammer
Thanks for watching.
No shame in dancing! and others do it as well. Fantastic work you're doing and completely understand the excitement at making progress. For example, I follow a youtube called "1 Woman Building in The Last Frontier" and she dances near the end of many of her tubes. For example, see 37:33 of "In Fairbanks, I Build and Insulate Upstairs, then Take a Trip to my Cabin in Delta" tube :).
Thanks for watching Kenneth!
great project, keeps you moving and with a great goal insight
Interesting and fun. See ya!
Thanks for watching geezer. Stay safe in the woods and especially around those power saws.
@@affordabledesertliving3487 Will do best as I can.
Excellent video.Lot to learn
Thanks for being so faithful to watch all of these Abid.
Don it looks like an outdoor concert stage ;)) It looked really easy and quick to install.
Great job !
Thanks Rags. It should be a great place to entertain friends with lots of room. Yep the install was 10 times easier than I thought it would be.
Good job as usual
Thanks Marie!
Looks good Don!!!
Thanks so much Jeff!
Great job Don
Thanks for watching Mark!
You are awesome .
Many thanks!
I was just thinking how flexible you are that’s awesome. By the way, I saw Men Without Hats (Safety Dance) open up for the Talking Heads in 1983 in Philly.😂
Wow that must have been so fun to see Men Without Hats live. Thanks for the lovely comments and encouragement!
Nicely done
Thanks so very much Peter.
Looking good
Thanks so much!
Don, it was good to meet you at Doc Holidays last saturday night. Take care.
Dan thanks so much for coming up and saying hi! Loved meeting you and hope to see you again!
All desert dwellers should choose this new , exciting SOB plywood for their floor ! Da Rats won't beable to chew a hole through 'My' floor !
You are doing an awesome job!
Thanks for that encouragement Carol!
Impressive
Thanks Connie!
Framing the walls is exciting. The house begins to take shape. Will you be using 2x6 studs ? I have found that Lowes lumber seems to be of better quality. Straight lumber goes a long way. You are doing awesome!! 👍👍👍
No question Lowes is the clear winner here in Sierra vista. Super friendly helpful staff at the Pro desk as well. Danielle in particular is tops. Yes indeed the walls will be 2x6s!
Don, I would still cover the floor to keep the moisture from puddling on the wood.
Its water resistant for months and months Beth but actually I am more concerned about sun damage here. The desert sun can turn most things into twisted pretzels.
Nice job
Thanks so much!
Happy Dance!!
Happy days!
osb has come a long way .
No question about that one Tim!
You are Awsome!!!
Thanks for watching Dixie!
Don! This is great! You’re doing a great job! I’m curious if you pick up those pieces of trash? The wind seems to be blowing them away. My concern is wildlife will eat it. ❤❤❤❤
Thanks Pam! Yep the trash was all picked up but off camera afterwards. Cheers!
@@affordabledesertliving3487 I figured you would 😃👍❤️ awesome!!!
Wow great job!!! Not sure why you wanted to drop the ply, which splashed your product everywhere.
Hi Scot. Its basically a choice of sliding the 4x8 sheets in place which tends to smear the product vs dropping them in place. Wind was an issue here but if properly dropped splashing is reduced.
Dance. Dance for sure.......
Could happen... LOL.
Oh Happy Day is a Gospel music classic Song by Edwin Hawkins R.I.P. was written to encourage God's people, you are going to live a long life just because you're doing things that makes you happy and free. "DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY"....
Thanks Terry! Yes a wonderful song for sure.
