The story was when he was 16, he was gang banging. A dude he knew from elementary school threw some gang signs at him while he was with his mom but he let it go. A couple of days later, Derrontay and his friend got into a car accident in a McDonalds parking lot coincidentally with the same dude and his friend. And it pretty much played out how the scene went here. He grabbed a crowbar and smacked dude with a couple of times, nothing life threatening. He did 15 months and eventually got this role in the movie. He talked about it in his casting interview for the behind scenes.
