    Introduction to the work:
For most composers, a world premiere is an existential situation. After all, creative power is an expression of one's own personality. And so a skeptical audience reaction is easily perceived as a personal rejection. Sergei Rachmaninov had such an experience as a young composer. The premiere of his First Symphony was a fiasco, a traumatizing failure. After that, he did not compose a single note for three years. It was not until ten years later that he ventured to compose his 2nd Symphony - this time a dazzling success.
Success in general: as a pianist, Rachmaninov was highly acclaimed both in the USA and in Europe. To compensate, he retreated to the idyllic Swiss countryside for the summer months from 1930 and had a modern villa built on the shores of Lake Lucerne. Here he found the peace and quiet he needed to compose. In addition to the Corelli Variations and the famous Paganini Rhapsody, he composed the 3rd Symphony in the summers of 1935/36. Like Elgar in his Cello Concerto, Rachmaninov also took stock of his compositions: he was a Russian, in exile due to the October Revolution, a Romantic through and through, who found it difficult to find himself in the world of modernity. He seems to unite all of this in his Third Symphony: the rapturous themes so typical of him, but now, shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, much more roughened in sound than in the Second. While he was composing the Third, the trauma of the failure of the First was still in his bones. And yet (or perhaps precisely because of this?) he is musically daring. What does the audience say when a symphony comprises only three movements rather than the familiar four? When the slow middle movement contains fast passages that replace the usual scherzo movement? And indeed, the audience reacted cautiously at the premiere. Today, however, the qualities are clear: highly varied music in which Romanticism and Modernism join hands.

It's hard to understand why this work isn't performed and recorded more often. The Second Symphony is an established classic. But, it shouldn't be the only Rachmaninoff symphony on the menu - not when something as wonderful as this symphony exists.
    Best wishes from Vermont 🍁

Most people listen to a classical work because it's fashionable, not because they actually like it. This awe-inspiring work never became fashionable .

@@jonathanteller6550 That's a sad attitude, but you are probably right, it is the attitude of many.
The first two movements of this symphony in particular are very good indeed, a work that deserves much greater appreciation nd much more attention. Maybe this is still happening now (as one of the few remaining good things within these evil times)?

@@germanchris4440I’d say the second movement is the best of the 3. That rising climax in the middle of the movement is amazing, and that beautiful, longing solo violin at the end puts a beautiful touch. And as always, the bass is prominent and resoundingly strong. An incredible piece

I haven't heard the second movement's theme at 14:39 phrased that way before. In each arpeggio, the first note seems very detached from the next three. Good twist, I like it!
