So if you turn it 3 times the same way, you can either undo what you just did by turning it back the other way 3 times, or just turn it one more time. So you are both 3 moves and 1 move away from it being solved at the same time.
I learnt to do the rubiks cube back in highschool and i definitely wouldn't call myself a speed cuber, but it's still probably the most super obvious "trick" i've ever seen on this show. It takes 5 minutes playing with a cube to know that one.
True, that is kind of funny, but I guess the point is that Penn and Teller may know how the trick was done, but because they know how the trick was done they also know that it was probably very hard to do. Thus, although they weren't taken by surprise necessarily, they were able to recognize that this man has an extremely special talent in magic. Again though I agree that the title was very misleading, that's TH-cam for you I guess.
Magic is 90% performance. Even if they know how the trick, technically, was performed, they can still be blown away by the magician's stage presence and performance.
Agree with the replies. It's just like Kosya's trick with grabbing the cards. It takes YEARS of practice to do that trick consistently under high pressure with magicians watching. Even if Pro Magicians know how to do the trick doesn't mean they can do it.
There was a hollow cube with a side missing still in the bag, thats why he had to let the naked cube roll out of the bag because he couldnt reach in and grab it. He poured the cube stickers into the hollow cube, inserted the “naked” (most likely colored on the side he never showed the audience) cube back into the hollow case, and then pulled the whole thing out. The camera cuts away for a bit but I believe he does a slight of hand during his bow before walking down to Penn and Teller in order to swap the phony cube for a real one to hand him - banking a bit on the fact that they would stop paying attention once the trick seemed finished. Penn hinted towards the bow being important so the guy knew they caught him
Youre right. If you slow the video down and look at the first side you see once the trick is done, its the yellow side, and you can see something is clearly off with that side of the cube. He then quickly rotates it around to that the yellow side is no longer facing outwards.
Turning a solved rubik's cube 20 times does not make it "20 turns away from being solved." Pretty sure that was only like 3 or 4 turns from being solved. I'll admit though it probably takes a lot of practice to do it in one seamless movement like that.
I think it was a trick cube. Sort of spring loaded double jointed factory reset button. He was holding the left wheel. But in a single fram the bottom left changed to yellow from green. He moved the right wheel upwards with out any visible lateral movement. But the bottom right side changed to yellow as if there was lateral rotation.
Michael Greenwood there was no trick cube, he scrambled it with specific moves so that he could easily solve it with few moves you can do as fast as you can see in the video so it looks like a black magic
To Kerry. I never thought it was 'black magic!' But using 0.25 speed I couldn't see any lateral rotations so could not see how the bottom right turned yellow. But that may explain why he removed his finger from the bottom right (To turn the bottom laterally). Maybe the fps camera was too slow to capture the rotation. So one frame it is green then the next it is yellow. So with out trickery it just looked impossible to me. But the hand can be faster than the camera. TY.
Watch when he scrambled the cube forth and back. Watch his fingers befor and after he solved the cube. Also notice the patterns. He is doing one turn with his left hand and then flicks two fingers to rotate the left plane the top plane and the bottom plane. He is very fast no doubt about it.
The second trick, there is a hollowed "solved" cube in the bag the whole time, the naked cube and stickers go into the solved cube box, and then it's closed. You can see he is holding something in the bag when he dumps out the naked cube. You can also see the solved cube's corners look funny when he pulls it out (compare it to the one Penn holds up at the end). At about 4:25 they cut to a wide scene and you can see him take a brief bow and do something with the cube near his coat, that is the bow Penn is talking about when he switches out the fake solved cube box with a real cube.
Probably not. You can see it if you watch very carefully, that he palms the black cube and puts it in his pocket. No idea how he got rid of the stickers, though.
@@praevasc4299 John is right. if you look at the cube when he pulls it out of the bag you can tell its a shell. Thats why he displayed it the way he did. Also Penn talking about watching him take his bows is when he switched the cubes... but they didnt show that part
And used sleight of hand and switched the cube before giving it to Penn, that’s why Penn is emphasizing his comment about how they “looked carefully to his bow”
Thanks for the explanation of the trick, guys! The main part that struck me was the fact that the solved cube looked bigger than the black cube. I did notice it right away, it's quite obvious I think. I did only wonder in the middle of the show if it was just the camera coming up for a close shot that made for the impression. But in hindsight that's probably the stage director to help the magician. As the show progresses quickly the audience will forget about it and so the magic works. Other commenters have then given the reason for it - the solved cube is a hollow box that the black cube fits into. The yellow side is a cap. At 4:11 one can see the grooves around the yellow cap as it sits on the box falling to the side, and up to 4:12 one can compare the edges of the yellow side to the new top and the orange side to the top being different - until the cube is turned to hide the yellow side in the back. Remember, that's all done in about one second with the cube falling over which the eye can hardly focus on. So without a video a human can hardly recognize that there is a yellow cap during the show. Solving the first normal cube with a normal double move will only help to distract the audience when he hands over the second cube for a second time. You are less critical by that time to look for a moment when the trick cube is exchanged with a normal cube. Actually, at 4:26 his hand moves to his body before stepping forward. Again, the camera is very nice to the magician. And that's the first time that I realized - it's not a competition, P&T are helping their guests as good as they can. It's all part of a show.
It's confirmed that the cameras are used in a way to help the trick. But i dont think Penn & Teller are in on it. They will play along with the performer if they already figured out how it works. But if they havent they will try to work it out

@@ceatonbusch the gist of what he said is that the cube appeared to be randomly scrambled but it wasnt. It was actually only a couple turns away from being solved and with a good quality competition cube you can execute those moves so fast they're barely visible. Takes practice though. The other thing he said is that he knew how he had gotten a fully stickered cube into the bag and gotten the unstickered one out. The thing about watching him doing the bow is that was how he hid the evidence after the trick.
Hey man, I had like zero self confidence and I was kinda nervous every time I left my house, but learning magic gives you this really weird confidence knowing you have a way to talk to almost anyone through magic and it's just the coolest thing. Fun fact: 20 moves is indeed the shortest sequence to solve the most scrambled cube. That very specific sequence, which you can look up on Wikipedia as "super flip", has all the edge pieces turned the other way while all the corners are aligned properly. Every other scramble of a cube has an optimized solution shorter than 20 moves. In the first trick, he just made 20 moves that ended in an almost-solved state that needed a really few turns to solve.
He dropped the stickers in a secret pocket in the bag on the top end. That's why he had to fold the top twice and hold on to it while shaking the bag so the stickers don't fall out. And that's why he had to tear the bag to reveal the solved cube because had he turned it upside down the stickers would have fallen out and he had to show that the stickers have disappeared so he couldn't have reached into the bag and pulled the cube out. Showing the empty bag later by turning it to the camera would have revealed the secret pocket. And the solved pixels were metal pieces stuck on five sides of the insides of the bag meticulously arranged in a grid. And they get magnetically attached to their exact places when he turns the electromagnet inside the cube on (notice his left hand goes behind the table to turn it on using a remote). And the sixth side was already solved. Notice he never shows the sixth side of the naked cube and never shows the insides of the bag. That side, he turned it on top while placing the cube inside the bag. And the cube he gave to Penn was a different cube which he switched while bowing down (this part they don't show in the video but Penn gave it away). And the torn bag with the hidden pocket with the stickers in it goes inside his pocket. And for the first trick it was never 20 moves away. it was just four moves away. Anyone who's solved a 3x3 would know that. R'D'RD. These four moves would solve it and it can be done in under a second with a lot of practice. But i could be wrong. So don't call me a dumbass; just tell me your solution and if it's better than mine then i'll accept it.
My guess was that it was an all black cube accept one side which he kept hidden from us, inside the paper bag was a hollow shell, (box with out a top) that the black cube neatly fits into creating the appearance of a completed Rubix, the stickers could be dropped into the shell before the black cube, which cleans that up, when he handed the cube to Penn I thought ooh maybe not, what else could it be, but then Penn tipped a switch, so I still think that's probably the easiest way to create the effect

In the first trick, although it looks like he makes 20 random turns, this is carefully practised so that many of the turns are reversed, and the cube is only 3 or 4 turns from solving which can be done instantly with an oiled competition quality cube. The second trick is revealed at 4:12 when in a few frames you can see that the yellow side is actually the lid of a box in which he has placed the stickers and the blank cube. What is not shown in this film is that he switched this box for another regular cube while taking bows after the reveal. Bows edited out, probably because of camera angles revealing too much. Incredibly clean execution of a well planned trick.
Good catch! That does explain why he rotated the yellow side away, also explains why he dumped the stickers in first to be collected by that box. Although, how did he make the cube without stickers have a side with the yellow stickers, or was it a flap that comes down after the empty cube is inserted into the box?
@@chautauquatrail The yellow side is a lid. The stickers and the blank cube are completely in the box. The box is the size of a regular cube. Because the blank cube is all black, you don’t realise that it is smaller than a regular cube. You don’t have the colour reference to help you mentally assess its size. After the reveal, and the slightly obvious turn of the yellow lid away from camera, he moves to the side and bows several times, during which he switches the cube and places the box in his right jacket pocket. As he approaches Penn & Teller to hand over the cube, you can see the box in his pocket. When he returns to (beautiful) Alison, you can see him attempt to hide that pocket… Every movement a magician makes is important. Of course P&T know this. So the extravagant bowing, turning the cube away, trying to keep the pocket out of their line of sight etc., these are all huge clues.
I love the whole magicians codes and secret ways of speaking that is so cool. I love how he was able to explain how the trick was done without giving the slightest hint (to me anyway) how he explained it.
Watch it in 0.25x speed a few times. You can see him do 4 individual rotations. 1. Right hand rotates up a quarter turn. 2. Left middle finger flicks the bottom around a quarter turn. 3. Right index finger flicks the top around a quarter turn. 4 Right hand continues rotating up another quarter turn. Super impressive how fast and smooth he does it though.
Penn gave away this trick with his comments about random. Obviously a rubix cube does not work that way. He had to make like 3 moves to get it solved. It is impressive, but I am guessing he is only able to do that with that exact order. 20 "random" turns that actually just leads you 3 turns away from solving, not 20. Then they give away that he switched during bowing. They mentioned it too much and how they were looking. The "solved" cube was a fake that he switched out before giving a real one to Penn. The bag seemed to have something in it, as he made sure never to pressure the bottom. I am guessing the black cube had a shell inside the bag to be slit into. That is also where the stickers went. Then he placed the "black" cube in its shell. Which is why we never saw more than 5 sides, the 6th was in his palm, already "solved." Then when he puts it into the presolved shell, it looks like magic. BlamoO!
What are you talking about, he shows every side of the cube at 4:20... But just before that it's easy to see that it's in a shell, right after he opens the bag.
That makes sense. I think you’re right. I thought the solved cube looked funny, because the color squares look like they’re raised too high off the surface.
Here's my guess: in the bag was a shell with a lid that looks like a Rubik's cube. He dumped the stickers in and placed the naked cube in, and shut the lid. After revealing the cube, he used sleight of hand to replace that cube with a functioning one.
2:00 As someone who messes around in Rubiks Cubes... i did that with an online guide when was 12.... because there is a certain way of turning the sides so that it mixes back up again and just comes back to be solved by itself.

My theory is that the black cube was a hollow cube that would easily fall apart when shaken, with the real cube in the bag as well. When he ripped the bag, he somehow got the black cube and bag with stickers up his sleeve or in a pocket.
As a speedcuber myself, what he did was really obvious, especially with his first "trick". The color patterns were as similar to a 3-move solve 2x2 scramble.

Yep, the people claiming the hollow cube are correct. The outline of the cube in the bag is bigger than the "naked cube" and at 4:11/4:12 you can definitely see the yellow corner against his thumb background is not completely seated and is out of face. He also turns the yellow side back towards him to hide it after it comes out of the bag.....he didn't need to do that if the cube was truly a pure cube. Also, he never turns any part of the cube that came out of the bag. The camera does cut away because before the shot changes (4:26) he is directly behind his table putting things into his jacket/vest, after the seemingly instantaneous shot change (4:29) he is already out in front and away from his table. This missing part is when he was taking a bow(s) and he switches the cube to give to Penn. You can indeed see a bulge (trick cube) in his right side pocket too.

In the bag there is a box that looks like the cube, the black cube is smaller and fits in that box, along with the stickers which went first so they're on the bottom. After shaking the top of the box closes magnetically and he pulls out the box that looks like a real cube from far away, he switches it with a real cube which he gives to Penn.
It's a show about trying to figure out how a magic trick was done, If you came to the comment section thinking that everyone interested in figuring out how a trick works wouldn't be speculating and giving their opinions here then you're gonna have a bad time.
That's not the point. The point is that everyone in the comments on almost every one of these types of videos says crap like "Oh, that is SO easy a child could do it." or gives hilariously wrong descriptions of how it's done, while being completely self-assuredly correct. Brundage never did it this way. If you listen he said "never been done with a cube before" meaning he knows many OTHER tricks have been done with cubes, but no ones done the reverse sticker trick

Since a producer knows in advance how each trick is done, you'd think they would have some input into editing so there isn't a cut away at a critical moment, like when the guest is taking a bow at the end of a trick where the trick ain't over until after the bow. Great tricks, bad editing. Well done!
There was no bow, it was not cut. Penn was talking in code, the bow is the bow he made with the top of the bag, he pockets the black cube while shaking the bag, that's why he takes so long, he's distracting you from where he's putting the black cube. There's no hollow cube nonsense, its an already solved cube in the bag, the black cube goes in his pocket, nothing was cut You people were fooled by both him and by Penns explanation, there was no bow cut And before you ask where the color squares went, look how he dumps them into the top of the bag, there's a little pocket of paper there and then he folds them into the top so they dont fall out, which is why he rips the bottom of the bag, the color squares are in the top, the solved cube is in the bottom and the black cube went into his pocket while the bag was being shaken You were all distracted, which is what Penn was talking about
At 2:03 you can pause the video and use . and , to move frame by frame. The color just magically changes. No movement can be seen. Can someone explain this?
It wasn't a great episode to be honest. I guarantee that you could perform that trick flawlessly within 5 minutes of me showing it to you. It's a prop trick with no sleight of hand - and so it pretty much performs itself. It's actually far easier than any of the beginners effects you can buy at a magic store - like the paddles or the eggcup, as they require some minor handling and practice. The only difficulty comes if you want to let the audience examine the cube afterwards - which is the part he royally messed up unfortunately : /
bingo bongo when he turns the blank cube, he makes sure the side facing him never gets revealed, then when he puts the cube in the bag, he puts it exactly upside down and right before the cube goes in, precisely 3:42 you can kind of tell that there is a slight yellow reflection on his palm (take note of that color). Also notice how carefully he places the stickers and the cube and how gently he holds the bag. Now when he reveals the cube, take a look at 4:11, and then the overall shape of the cube after that point. It's one of those hollowed out rubik's cube holders. Took a little bit to figure this out but still a great trick.

mini fuzz I actually saw John answer the question after I posted the first comment here on why he’s always looking to make friends. He said when he was younger he didn’t have many friends. That is a horrible feeling growing up feeling like you don’t fit in anywhere. So it makes sense. People do what they do for a reason. ❤️
Warning: Second trick spoiler..... . . . . . . . . . . There is a gimmick cube in the bag which is hollow and has the Black plain cube, if you notice the black cube is smaller in size. Also the bag retains the cube shape and check how he holds the empty bag. Into this gimmick cube box he dumps the stickers and the plain cube. Then when taking a Bow he switched this with actual Rubik's cube which he gives to Penn. That's why Penn mentioned Bow.
If you look at 4:11 you can see that there is another layer on the Rubik's cube. You can see it if you look at the top left of the yellow face Here's my theory: He poured the stickers into a small bag within the paper bag to get rid of them. The cube he put into the bag has magnets inside of it. Then, the paper bag has the layers with the solved faces in an open box configuration. These faces have magnets on them. He places the cube into the open box, shakes it, and the magnets within the solved faces falls down onto the cube. He also immediately turns the cube so you can't see the yellow face. Most likely, this happens a lot when he does this trick. Edit: After finishing the video, he didn't turn the cube at all. He also acted like he was putting away the shot glass/paper that he used, but he was swapping out the Rubik's cube for a real one. That's why Penn said "we were watching it all the way through your bows." So they saw him swap out the cube and they were calling him out on it.
I thought John really did want to relate to his audience by calling them friends. Then when he said his dad "worked" in Saudi, and taught him magic to relate with other kids, that checked another box for intentional purposes to make friends. When he seconded the person who cheered him at 5:22, that felt just like what preachers do. With all that I decided to look him up as a wonderful, gospel-preaching Christian - yep! It's an algorithm. If you were to come up with a sequence of moves and executed them repeatedly, no matter how complex the sequence, the Rubik's Cube will always return to its original state- so long as you don't change the sequence midway. For a super-simplified example, if you rotate just a single side of the Rubik's Cube, after 4 turns you'll return to the base position. It's the same principle but instead of just a single turn 4 times, you do multiple turns a number of times. Basically: repeating a pattern a number of times will always take you back to the point from which the pattern started from as long as the pattern was not altered midway. If the pattern was altered midway, it becomes a completely new pattern and from that point, you'd have to do every single move you'd completed from start to present multiple times. Say your pattern was flipping the right-side twice, bottom twice, left twice, and finally the top twice. If you did that entire sequence once, but on the second time did: right twice, bottom once, left twice, and then top twice, now your entire pattern has changed. Instead of right twice, bottom twice, left twice, and top twice, your pattern has become: right twice, bottom twice, left twice, top twice, right twice, bottom once, left twice, and lastly top twice. You'd have to repeat that new pattern until you've returned to the base position except most times you won't even realize you've accidentally messed up your first pattern, and now that it's become a new pattern, repeating the first pattern will not return the cube to its base position because even the base position changes when the pattern changes (if you stick to the first pattern instead of the new pattern). It's nothing special, if you have a cube lying around- try it yourself. If you follow the set pattern all the way through, it will always return to the base position. I've tried this multiple times when I was learning how to solve the Rubik's Cube- some of them took over an hour to return to the base position! (Yes, I spent hours flipping a 3x3x3 square, don't judge me- I was addicted) I'm unsure of how the complexity of the pattern correlates to the number of repeats it requires to return to the base position but I'm pretty sure that the way it works is: the more complex the pattern, the more repeats it takes.
I don't know how the second trick is done, and I must say whatever you did, you did it perfectly! But I often do variations of the first trick to impress people, as a speed cuber it's easy to do :)
Theres a shell of colored cube inside the bag, he dumped the blank one inside the shell and closed the lid, you can tell by how the cube looks after. He then bowed at the audience to use sleight of hand to switch the cube before giving it to Penn. That’s why Penn is always saying “we looked at your bow carefully” because Penn and Teller already knows how its done.

Turning a solved rubik's cube 20 times does not make it "20 turns away from being solved." Pretty sure that was only like 3 or 4 turns from being solved. I'll admit though it probably takes a lot of practice to do it in one seamless movement like that.

I think it was a trick cube. Sort of spring loaded double jointed factory reset button. He was holding the left wheel. But in a single fram the bottom left changed to yellow from green. He moved the right wheel upwards with out any visible lateral movement. But the bottom right side changed to yellow as if there was lateral rotation.
Michael Greenwood there was no trick cube, he scrambled it with specific moves so that he could easily solve it with few moves you can do as fast as you can see in the video so it looks like a black magic

I never thought it was 'black magic!' But using 0.25 speed I couldn't see any lateral rotations so could not see how the bottom right turned yellow. But that may explain why he removed his finger from the bottom right (To turn the bottom laterally). Maybe the fps camera was too slow to capture the rotation. So one frame it is green then the next it is yellow. So with out trickery it just looked impossible to me. But the hand can be faster than the camera. TY.
Watch when he scrambled the cube forth and back. Watch his fingers befor and after he solved the cube. Also notice the patterns. He is doing one turn with his left hand and then flicks two fingers to rotate the left plane the top plane and the bottom plane. He is very fast no doubt about it.

The second trick, there is a hollowed "solved" cube in the bag the whole time, the naked cube and stickers go into the solved cube box, and then it's closed. You can see he is holding something in the bag when he dumps out the naked cube. You can also see the solved cube's corners look funny when he pulls it out (compare it to the one Penn holds up at the end). At about 4:25 they cut to a wide scene and you can see him take a brief bow and do something with the cube near his coat, that is the bow Penn is talking about when he switches out the fake solved cube box with a real cube.
Probably not. You can see it if you watch very carefully, that he palms the black cube and puts it in his pocket. No idea how he got rid of the stickers, though.

The main part that struck me was the fact that the solved cube looked bigger than the black cube. I did notice it right away, it's quite obvious I think. I did only wonder in the middle of the show if it was just the camera coming up for a close shot that made for the impression. But in hindsight that's probably the stage director to help the magician. As the show progresses quickly the audience will forget about it and so the magic works.
Other commenters have then given the reason for it - the solved cube is a hollow box that the black cube fits into. The yellow side is a cap. At 4:11 one can see the grooves around the yellow cap as it sits on the box falling to the side, and up to 4:12 one can compare the edges of the yellow side to the new top and the orange side to the top being different - until the cube is turned to hide the yellow side in the back. Remember, that's all done in about one second with the cube falling over which the eye can hardly focus on. So without a video a human can hardly recognize that there is a yellow cap during the show.
Solving the first normal cube with a normal double move will only help to distract the audience when he hands over the second cube for a second time. You are less critical by that time to look for a moment when the trick cube is exchanged with a normal cube. Actually, at 4:26 his hand moves to his body before stepping forward. Again, the camera is very nice to the magician. And that's the first time that I realized - it's not a competition, P&T are helping their guests as good as they can. It's all part of a show.
It's confirmed that the cameras are used in a way to help the trick. But i dont think Penn & Teller are in on it. They will play along with the performer if they already figured out how it works. But if they havent they will try to work it out

It was actually only a couple turns away from being solved and with a good quality competition cube you can execute those moves so fast they're barely visible. Takes practice though. The other thing he said is that he knew how he had gotten a fully stickered cube into the bag and gotten the unstickered one out. The thing about watching him doing the bow is that was how he hid the evidence after the trick.

Hey man, I had like zero self confidence and I was kinda nervous every time I left my house, but learning magic gives you this really weird confidence knowing you have a way to talk to almost anyone through magic and it's just the coolest thing. I just wanted to say that it's really cool to hear someone else that loves magic because it helps them make friends
Fun fact: 20 moves is indeed the shortest sequence to solve the most scrambled cube. That very specific sequence, which you can look up on Wikipedia as "super flip", has all the edge pieces turned the other way while all the corners are aligned properly.
Every other scramble of a cube has an optimized solution shorter than 20 moves. In the first trick, he just made 20 moves that ended in an almost-solved state that needed a really few turns to solve.
He dropped the stickers in a secret pocket in the bag on the top end. That's why he had to fold the top twice and hold on to it while shaking the bag so the stickers don't fall out. And that's why he had to tear the bag to reveal the solved cube because had he turned it upside down the stickers would have fallen out and he had to show that the stickers have disappeared so he couldn't have reached into the bag and pulled the cube out. Showing the empty bag later by turning it to the camera would have revealed the secret pocket. And the solved pixels were metal pieces stuck on five sides of the insides of the bag meticulously arranged in a grid. And they get magnetically attached to their exact places when he turns the electromagnet inside the cube on (notice his left hand goes behind the table to turn it on using a remote). And the sixth side was already solved. Notice he never shows the sixth side of the naked cube and never shows the insides of the bag. That side, he turned it on top while placing the cube inside the bag. And the cube he gave to Penn was a different cube which he switched while bowing down (this part they don't show in the video but Penn gave it away). And the torn bag with the hidden pocket with the stickers in it goes inside his pocket. And for the first trick it was never 20 moves away. it was just four moves away. Anyone who's solved a 3x3 would know that. R'D'RD. These four moves would solve it and it can be done in under a second with a lot of practice. But i could be wrong. So don't call me a dumbass; just tell me your solution and if it's better than mine then i'll accept it.
If that were the case he wouldnt hand it to P&T they would know it was magnetic.

My guess was that it was an all black cube accept one side which he kept hidden from us, inside the paper bag was a hollow shell, (box with out a top) that the black cube neatly fits into creating the appearance of a completed Rubix, the stickers could be dropped into the shell before the black cube, which cleans that up, when he handed the cube to Penn I thought ooh maybe not, what else could it be, but then Penn tipped a switch, so I still think that's probably the easiest way to create the effect
He switched the cube while bowing to the audience. That's what Penn was saying at the end

In the first trick, although it looks like he makes 20 random turns, this is carefully practised so that many of the turns are reversed, and the cube is only 3 or 4 turns from solving which can be done instantly with an oiled competition quality cube.
The second trick is revealed at 4:12 when in a few frames you can see that the yellow side is actually the lid of a box in which he has placed the stickers and the blank cube. What is not shown in this film is that he switched this box for another regular cube while taking bows after the reveal. Bows edited out, probably because of camera angles revealing too much.

The yellow side is a lid. The stickers and the blank cube are completely in the box. The box is the size of a regular cube.
Because the blank cube is all black, you don’t realise that it is smaller than a regular cube. You don’t have the colour reference to help you mentally assess its size.
After the reveal, and the slightly obvious turn of the yellow lid away from camera, he moves to the side and bows several times, during which he switches the cube and places the box in his right jacket pocket.
As he approaches Penn & Teller to hand over the cube, you can see the box in his pocket. When he returns to (beautiful) Alison, you can see him attempt to hide that pocket…
Every movement a magician makes is important. Of course P&T know this. So the extravagant bowing, turning the cube away, trying to keep the pocket out of their line of sight etc., these are all huge clues.
I love the whole magicians codes and secret ways of speaking that is so cool. I love how he was able to explain how the trick was done without giving the slightest hint (to me anyway) how he explained it.

Penn gave away this trick with his comments about random. Obviously a rubix cube does not work that way. He had to make like 3 moves to get it solved. It is impressive, but I am guessing he is only able to do that with that exact order. 20 "random" turns that actually just leads you 3 turns away from solving, not 20.
Then they give away that he switched during bowing. They mentioned it too much and how they were looking. The "solved" cube was a fake that he switched out before giving a real one to Penn. The bag seemed to have something in it, as he made sure never to pressure the bottom. I am guessing the black cube had a shell inside the bag to be slit into. That is also where the stickers went. Then he placed the "black" cube in its shell. Which is why we never saw more than 5 sides, the 6th was in his palm, already "solved." Then when he puts it into the presolved shell, it looks like magic.

Here's my guess: in the bag was a shell with a lid that looks like a Rubik's cube. He dumped the stickers in and placed the naked cube in, and shut the lid. After revealing the cube, he used sleight of hand to replace that cube with a functioning one.

As someone who messes around in Rubiks Cubes... i did that with an online guide when was 12.... because there is a certain way of turning the sides so that it mixes back up again and just comes back to be solved by itself.

My theory is that the black cube was a hollow cube that would easily fall apart when shaken, with the real cube in the bag as well. When he ripped the bag, he somehow got the black cube and bag with stickers up his sleeve or in a pocket.

As a speedcuber myself, what he did was really obvious, especially with his first "trick". The color patterns were as similar to a 3-move solve 2x2 scramble.

Yep, the people claiming the hollow cube are correct. The outline of the cube in the bag is bigger than the "naked cube" and at 4:11/4:12 you can definitely see the yellow corner against his thumb background is not completely seated and is out of face. He also turns the yellow side back towards him to hide it after it comes out of the bag.....he didn't need to do that if the cube was truly a pure cube. Also, he never turns any part of the cube that came out of the bag. The camera does cut away because before the shot changes (4:26) he is directly behind his table putting things into his jacket/vest, after the seemingly instantaneous shot change (4:29) he is already out in front and away from his table. This missing part is when he was taking a bow(s) and he switches the cube to give to Penn. You can indeed see a bulge (trick cube) in his right side pocket too.

In the bag there is a box that looks like the cube, the black cube is smaller and fits in that box, along with the stickers which went first so they're on the bottom. After shaking the top of the box closes magnetically and he pulls out the box that looks like a real cube from far away, he switches it with a real cube which he gives to Penn.
Maybe that's why Penn was referring to the bows. That's where he switched!

Since a producer knows in advance how each trick is done, you'd think they would have some input into editing so there isn't a cut away at a critical moment, like when the guest is taking a bow at the end of a trick where the trick ain't over until after the bow. There was no bow, it was not cut. Penn was talking in code, the bow is the bow he made with the top of the bag, he pockets the black cube while shaking the bag, that's why he takes so long, he's distracting you from where he's putting the black cube.

The paper bag trick was actually the best trick I cannot wrap my head around on this show.
It wasn't a great episode to be honest.
I guarantee that you could perform that trick flawlessly within 5 minutes of me showing it to you. It's a prop trick with no sleight of hand - and so it pretty much performs itself. It's actually far easier than any of the beginners effects you can buy at a magic store - like the paddles or the eggcup, as they require some minor handling and practice.
The only difficulty comes if you want to let the audience examine the cube afterwards - which is the part he royally messed up unfortunately : /
That's literally everything ever... is really easy once someone shows you or after your first time doing it...
Great stage presence, and he got right to the trick without an overly elaborate set-up. Very cool.
bingo bongo when he turns the blank cube, he makes sure the side facing him never gets revealed, then when he puts the cube in the bag, he puts it exactly upside down and right before the cube goes in, precisely 3:42 you can kind of tell that there is a slight yellow reflection on his palm (take note of that color). Also notice how carefully he places the stickers and the cube and how gently he holds the bag. Now when he reveals the cube, take a look at 4:11, and then the overall shape of the cube after that point. It's one of those hollowed out rubik's cube holders. Took a little bit to figure this out but still a great trick.

There is a gimmick cube in the bag which is hollow and has the Black plain cube, if you notice the black cube is smaller in size. Also the bag retains the cube shape and check how he holds the empty bag. Into this gimmick cube box he dumps the stickers and the plain cube. Then when taking a Bow he switched this with actual Rubik's cube which he gives to Penn. That's why Penn mentioned Bow.

If you look at 4:11 you can see that there is another layer on the Rubik's cube. You can see it if you look at the top left of the yellow face
Here's my theory: He poured the stickers into a small bag within the paper bag to get rid of them.
The cube he put into the bag has magnets inside of it.
Then, the paper bag has the layers with the solved faces in an open box configuration. These faces have magnets on them.
He places the cube into the open box, shakes it, and the magnets within the solved faces falls down onto the cube.
He also immediately turns the cube so you can't see the yellow face. Most likely, this happens a lot when he does this trick.
Edit: After finishing the video, he didn't turn the cube at all.
He also acted like he was putting away the shot glass/paper that he used, but he was swapping out the Rubik's cube for a real one. That's why Penn said "we were watching it all the way through your bows." So they saw him swap out the cube and they were calling him out on it.
I thought John really did want to relate to his audience by calling them friends. Then when he said his dad "worked" in Saudi, and taught him magic to relate with other kids, that checked another box for intentional purposes to make friends. When he seconded the person who cheered him at 5:22, that felt just like what preachers do. With all that I decided to look him up as a wonderful, gospel-preaching Christian - yep! It's an algorithm. If you were to come up with a sequence of moves and executed them repeatedly, no matter how complex the sequence, the Rubik's Cube will always return to its original state- so long as you don't change the sequence midway. For a super-simplified example, if you rotate just a single side of the Rubik's Cube, after 4 turns you'll return to the base position. It's the same principle but instead of just a single turn 4 times, you do multiple turns a number of times.
Basically: repeating a pattern a number of times will always take you back to the point from which the pattern started from as long as the pattern was not altered midway. If the pattern was altered midway, it becomes a completely new pattern and from that point, you'd have to do every single move you'd completed from start to present multiple times. Say your pattern was flipping the right-side twice, bottom twice, left twice, and finally the top twice. If you did that entire sequence once, but on the second time did: right twice, bottom once, left twice, and then top twice, now your entire pattern has changed. Instead of right twice, bottom twice, left twice, and top twice, your pattern has become: right twice, bottom twice, left twice, top twice, right twice, bottom once, left twice, and lastly top twice. You'd have to repeat that new pattern until you've returned to the base position except most times you won't even realize you've accidentally messed up your first pattern, and now that it's become a new pattern, repeating the first pattern will not return the cube to its base position because even the base position changes when the pattern changes (if you stick to the first pattern instead of the new pattern).
It's nothing special, if you have a cube lying around- try it yourself. If you follow the set pattern all the way through, it will always return to the base position. I've tried this multiple times when I was learning how to solve the Rubik's Cube- some of them took over an hour to return to the base position! (Yes, I spent hours flipping a 3x3x3 square, don't judge me- I was addicted) I'm unsure of how the complexity of the pattern correlates to the number of repeats it requires to return to the base position but I'm pretty sure that the way it works is: the more complex the pattern, the more repeats it takes.

I don't know how the second trick is done, and I must say whatever you did, you did it perfectly! But I often do variations of the first trick to impress people, as a speed cuber it's easy to do :)
Theres a shell of colored cube inside the bag, he dumped the blank one inside the shell and closed the lid, you can tell by how the cube looks after. He then bowed at the audience to use sleight of hand to switch the cube before giving it to Penn.
That’s why Penn is always saying “we looked at your bow carefully” because Penn and Teller already knows how its done.
