      I mean, I wouldn’t use it either, just because i have 23 hives with multiple supers. Douing it the old fashioned way is just better for me, i already have a separator, so why bother with these? Also, can i harvest bees wax with these? My woman uses bees wax for tons of stuff.
      But for a beginner who doesnt have the gear, these things look great. It is definitely a great starter set. I would not discourage a new bee keeper from buying a flow hive, thats for sure.

      @@stonehorn4641 I agree I have 11 hives and just use an extractor it’s not cost effective for me to replace everything and I use the wax as well. Robbed all my hives in about 3hrs and I don’t mind doing a bit of hard work robbing honey I feel since the bees are working their butts of I can sweat it out a bit as well. Although in the summer here in southern NSW Australia temps can be high 30s or above the 40s deg Celsius I wet down a t shirt keep me cool under my bee rig, helps heaps. Although the flow hive is quite ingenious I must admit and is probably quite useful for some people wanting to have bees.

      I too feel the same way! Your calm well spoken demeanor and highly informative information are top notch and are a natural to the teaching world geared toward the enthusiatic learner, which allows the leaner to embrace all of the knowledge given and move forward with it! While there may be other well done videos out there by other awesome beekeepers and teaching fellows, just as there are various teaching styles, there are also various styles of learners, sometimes creating issues for the learner if the teaching style does not resonate with them. Whether it be the tone of voice, the speed or lack there of in the wording being spoken, lack or too much visual aides and/or other various things!
      Please don't short change yourself from the joy of teaching and sharing beekeeping information, or those who would learn best from you as a teacher! Some people may need that over the top excitement to stay engaged but others may not and that would be where you could come in and fill a space that is there just waiting on you! If you want to do it, do so! If your feel there is another out there you would have your granddaughter to watch to learn and feel no need for your touch then don't do it!!! I really have no interest in bee keeping myself, but admire many of those that do. I just wanted to say it was honestly a pleasure to watch your videos and listen to your explanations. Not only were the videos very informative, but much of the footage is visually stunning. Very nicely done. I also really appreciate how you represent not only how I believe bee keepers ought to be, but how all of us ought to be. You seem to have a very symbiotic relationship with your bees that is quite beautiful.

Do u need anything extra that doesn't come with the flow hive? Instructional videos like this will get ppl to become novice beekeepers, & with time & experience they'll become veteran beekeepers. Frederick, thank you for your Flowhive videos. Like you, I purchased early (6 frame). Like you, I was annoyed with the initial workmanship of the cedar box and hardware. Unlike you, I had no idea what I'm doing with bees. Family intervened. I put the project away until now due to many major family travels and my lack of understanding.You're filling many of my gaps in understanding that the inventors appeared to assume away. One item that still perplexes me is how the boxes merely, loosely stack on each other, and being unconnected - lacking rigid support. We have wind in the northern plains. Your use of ballast on the hive roofs, your measuring of hive slope, and your 'take off stations' made perfect sense. Thanks again.

    I'm a British townie who knows nothing about bee keeping - though my parents kept a hive when they were young newlyweds and lived on the Isle of Wight. They look back on those days of youthful honey production with great nostalgia! Your videos came up in my suggestions, and I've been watching with mum and dad, now in their eighties. We've fast become addicted to your videos, and I had to subscribe!
    What magical, mysterious creatures bees are, and so sophisticated in their set up and behaviours. I'm constantly asking myself HOW do they know how to do all this amazing stuff! You just have to love and respect them. The hive is like a secret world you give us a fascinating window on. I don't know if I'll ever have an opportunity to keep bees but you've sparked huge curiosity in me on the whole subject and I'm hungry to learn more.
    And I have to say, your calm, zen like energy makes your videos a joy - and I'm sure is a key element of your success in bee keeping. My Mum recalled of the two of them, it was my dad who generally got stung. She put that down to his high energy and rather unpredictable movements! She has always been laid back like yourself, and I suspect that's a great asset to keep in harmony with your bees.
    Anyway this was another inspiring video, what copious and beautiful amber honey! Do you sell it or is this a strictly non-commercial operation? Thank you for all the entertainment your channel is providing during lock down. Your videos have stirred many happy memories for my parents and put smiles on their faces - no mean feat in the pandemic! It's also soothing to 'spend time' with such a warm and lovely human being and to be reminded that there are big hearted and special people like you in the world. God bless you and yours, may you continue your valuable work for many years to come! XXX

Also, seeing one little worker seemingly trying to squeeze herself through the little hole below the extraction tube was super cute and funny. Your voice is really soothing and I appreciate the time you took to explain what you're doing and especially how you pay attention to the bee behaviour.

    I saw the flow frame when it was first gaining attention on the fundraiser site, awesome to see it actually working as intended, a much less intrusive way of collecting honey from healthy hives and such an awesome amount too! Bees deserve maximum respect, and so do the keepers who look after them!

    I am thinking of keeping bees. I make mead, and to do it from my own honey seems like an awesome thing.
    I have already planted wild flower seeds all over my yard during the last weeks of summer, hopefully they'll show up come springtime.

    I grew up with no dad but many many mentors. One of which was a man who did everything solo. He taught me so much about farming, both vegetable and animal, as well as beekeeping. I remember driving all over to various hives that he left on other peoples land to help their crops and make honey for him to sell. I loved all the information he taught me. I love beekeeping. Frank rarely used a suit or viel unless it was warm out and the bees were fiesty.He got stung all te time time but never slowed him a bit. Lived to nearly 100 too.

    I can't even imagine harvesting honey without being in a full suit, lifting 50 pound supers, and going through the painful process of getting the bees out of supers once they are off. This would also make having a few hives in your backyard much more neighbor-friendly.

      I have the same concern! I am very interested in buying a flow hive box, but this is holding me back.
      I had been beekeeping for a while, but I had a ton of help
      Now, I would be doing it on my own, and lifting hive boxes full of honey is quite daunting!!
      I like the idea of leaving the hive intact for both the bee's sake, and mine!

    • @bobbobbinson1841
      @bobbobbinson1841 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jenniferbarrett9253 I have seen no long term users address that point yet. But I am going to assume that they will break in the cold over time. I might try the china copy first to limit my investment. Then move up to the real one for a 2nd hive if I deem its worth it. The china one is so cheap that even if it breaks, its cheap enough to get more.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great question and a real concern. I've been using the Flow-Supers every year and have not had a material failure yet. One of the reasons that I like to use two keys is that I see it as less stressful on that plastic arc, so I concentrate them towards the shoulders. But I also haven't received any feedback regarding broken pieces with the exception of those who purchased the Chinese knock-off versions... but I think they also made the mistake of leaving them in direct sunlight during storage.

    • @FrederickDunn

    This is so fascinating, and you explain so thoroughly; thank you! I have a question though. You said that the bees remove the wax caps and fly them away to dispose of them. Do you know how they do that? Do they just drop them somewhere? Do they do something special with them, like cover them with something or make a pile? Is it always the same place? How far do they go? No worries if you don't know the answers, just some dumb questions that I was curious about. :)

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  8 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Thank you for that question... it is really interesting and they drop the caps upon landing, they don't release them from the air. It's hard to see where and how far they go, though I've observed them landing within 50 feet, while others fly out of my sight. Even with dead bee bodies, they fly out and land with them before releasing. An entomologist spoke with me about that after I gave a presentation and said their feet don't have the ability to release in the air. Very interesting in so many ways.

    I am happy to see your positive video on the flow hive frames. We are new beekeepers this year and bought two Flow hives. Excited to use them next year.

      Hi Lara, thanks so much. I hope you have a great experience with your bees! We have been extracting honey all day today and I can't help but think how different it would be is all our hives had flow-supers on them :)

    Hi everyone, I have been getting some questions about the flashing lights I have on my hive bodies. Here is a link to my video about those and thank you for watching! th-cam.com/video/8JiKdi0NF_8/w-d-xo.html

      Frederick, I only saw that your TH-cam video offered a discount right here.
      Might need to make it more prominent. I never thought I could ever be technology challenged, but here I am at 50, and it's happening!!!

    I really like how your super calm. I want to get into beekeeping I think it would be a nice therapeutic calming type of hobby. Looking at that honey dripping out makes me want to stick my finger in there and get a dollop of it!

      Thank y ou Steve, I think that bees, like chickens, are a form of observational meditation. I plan to keep bees for as long as possible. I hope you can get bees some day.

    Hi Frederick I am in awe of your video-graphy especially the close-ups. I agree with others that you have a calm mellifluous delivery. My flow super is just starting to be filled as we have had a wet winter & early spring here in Melbourne Australia so you have truly whetted my appetite. I have watched countless flow hive vids and without doubt yours are the most enjoyable, educative & unbiased.

      Hi Bob! What a nice start to my morning... thank you for the wonderful comment and I'm so glad you have been informed and entertained by my videos. I am envious that you are going into spring and summer while old man winter is knocking at my door. I truly appreciate that there are people like you out there!
