My boss saw this thumbnail and I got promoted
Day9 was talking about unit upgrades during one of his starcraft streams last week. He made the case that it adds more strategic depth by changing the calculus around who wins a fight. I.e. zealots v zerglings, where having a +1 attack uograde cuts the number if hits to kill from 3 to 2.
I feel like it also adds an element of uncertainty that creates more room for strategic error and uncertainty, which is what makes a game more satisfying in the long run and at a more middling skill level.
Lord of the Rings Battle For Middle Earth 2 has an interesting mechanic of having units (squads of units) have direct unit upgrades. You research upgrades and can min-max strategies around when to get certain upgrades to quickly empower certain units against the enemy. These upgrades are usually semi-universal, such as a blade upgrade goes to all swordsmen and halberds or axemen, but you have to upgrade the unit to have those swords.
Units also get direct upgrades from combat experience. So if they kill an entire enemy unit, they can level up from Level 1 to 2, and get a base upgrade of acquiring a bannerman (which regenerates health and unit numbers). Otherwise, you can research Banner Carriers, and upgrade a unit with a banner, upping them to level 2. So you get units up to Level 5, giving them combat experience giving them extra damage, speed, health, armor, and regen, with the ability to research further and give them further upgrades.
Dawn of War also has similar mechanics with leveling up units. You can level up a squad from four to eight men, equipping them with different, empowered weapons along the way, giving them better armor piercing, or burst or AoE damage.
You can also give certain squads a hero unit, acting as an additional unit to the squad, but with special abilities and enhancements for them. You can get a squad of Las-cannon and Flamer wielding Guardsmen with a Commissar leading them giving them extra resistances, a Harlequin leading a group of sniper-wielding Warp Singers to make them faster and have a healing ability, etc. If I recall depending on the game they also have raw unit upgrades for armor and certain weapons, so you could upgrade the penetration or take reduced damage from certain weapons on certain units.
The Total War series pretty much has only units, some of which are relatively direct upgrades, but all fill their unique role. Like other Craft games, this mostly comes down to their rock-paper-scissors-ability and cost to make/keep/heal. There are militia, which are great for numbers, but pathetically weak compared to their direct upgraded counterparts. But with a few buffs, and the right army composition, the numbers are so affordable and the army is devastating. Some have guns over bows but aren't capable of barraging an enemy as effectively over a wall or group of heavily armored units that absorb the pellets. Some horsemen beat some cavalry, but that cavalry unit can can just run through anything that's not a spear. A catapult beats everything that doesn't move, so all you need is a wall of stone or shields (unless the enemy also has a catapult). One unit can both defeat most other units in melee 1v3, with the ability to also use ranged attacks against another unit, but it costs 10x the upkeep and takes so long to heal, it could be worth it to just make another unit and disbanding the old one.
I find that, while personally it is a bit overwhelming as a newer player, the greater options and additional layers of ability make the game so much more interesting and fun. A hell of a lot harder to balance and not create meta strats. But I can appreciate, and I see a lot of variation in something like LotR:BFME2, where you can see some games go on for hours without some of these obvious, empowering upgrades. The Gondor Archers are one of the strongest units due its cheap cost, quick build, moderate health and decent damage output, but tourneys make them look like paper cutouts due to the skill ceiling of manipulating cavalry units.
tl:dr The more variation in units and upgrades, the more interesting but way more complex it gets. Games can balance this in unique ways but never there isn't "preferred" over another outside of personal taste. I personally enjoy all of them and rarely find imbalances that don't just require a tiny bit of tweaking instead major overhauls. I hope both Stormgate and Godsworn finds their balance both in mechanics and stylistically.
Now that you've played some W3C games as well, It made me realize how huge of a gap there is between Bnet and W3C. Most supposed high MMR Bnet players look like NPCs compared to mid MMR WC3 players. I really appreciate you playing one W3C as well as those games are actually challenging and you shows alot of cool micro stuff.
Oh yeah man, that's another level!!! But grubby has rivals either Bnet and W3C, i've seen a lot of good matches on Battlenet!! but most good matches are on W3C, so intense when you see how they are destroying grubby, (I am always team grubby) Like wtfffff he wont do it!!
12:30 honestly, the upgrade system i like most is the individual unit veterancy in red alert 3. Very casual friendly and you can have an elite force of commandos to hit and run with.
Pitlord don't jiggle jiggle, he cleaves.
9:33 pretty cool carillon swarm by him actually
11:30 we can see your eyes going bot right, see "forgot rmk hero?" in chat, rmk shadow into ultimate top left check "yep it was here under my eyes"
"Cool carrion swarm" A-ha. Sure. And everything went to sht cuz he died with no tp/pot vs raiders.
Just sad that same player could be so cool and so lame at the same time.
You both need to step outside for a minute. Breath the air. Touch the grass.
Love pitlord
Would be cool one pitlord with only supp units(like shaman bloodlust + lightning shield)
3:26 that was a bit aggressive. He means in your ranking vs common perception who is most underrated. He doesn’t need to rate them first for it to be a valid question
Grubby is weird like that sometimes
I couldn’t tell if he was joking or not lol
Aggressive? How? In what universe?
Seeing my favorite Tavern hero being used in pro play always warms my heart.
Based Pitlord user
I didn't realize cleave had such a wide effect, scary!
very fun game to watch, 16:00 clip was also a crazy micro if you did it intentionally, always fun to watch your stuff grubby!
yep, he definitely displaced his TC with windwalking BM intentionally. he did it earlier to a grunt also at 3:07
He does this trick several times in this video actually. This is the most noticeable one but I think he went for it 3 times in total, not looking back to check, but definitely intentional
You made a "be-cleaver" out of me!
14:07 Ah yes, the Orc version of Coil+Nova: the Crit+Crit.
"Dad can I bring my gf to dinner with us"
Grubby: "did you see her race?"
I'm laying in my bed today, because I got sick yesterday afternoon. I'm watching a bunch of your videos now, to keep me entertained. I just love your content Grubby. 😊
Same here!
mate, are you f'in kidding me ??
I *ALSO* got VERY sick *yesterday afternoon !! :O*
Really weird because I very, *VERY rarely* get sick at all, and it's *NEVER* in the _SPRING_ season... !! :O
.
That warstomp value in game 1 got me feeling a lil funky
Tremble before me by the pit lord voice, one of the all time best wc3 hero voice lines 😇
The chieftain stomp at 13:35 was disgusting
That Kodo-Backpack gave me an Idea of a super Solo Hero Strat with many Items and an Army and a Full Mana Heal Speed Protection Scrolls Heal Scrolls Pots with 2 backpacked Kodos behind
34:42 Imagine this taken out of context with audio only LOL
Nothing makes me happier than to see a dreadlord vaporise in the air😁
Mass batrider. Cool strat! 😎
10/10 thumbnail
7:25 bro said that like he was playing a new game he has never played lol
Madness? THIS IS GRUBBY!!!
what is that cut grubby haha, super saiyan mode
19:05 Technically, API is not "Access Point Interface", it's "Application Programming Interface". But yeah, we usually refer to it as some set of "access points".
3:25 -- imho it was *apm70, aka Deadman a.k.a. Andrey Sobolev*
Guy was HUGELY talented, and *NATURALLY* too -- he literally played THE LEAST on bnet, out of all then-pros. Almost no practice -- but STILL *HUGE RESULTS !! :O*
Problem was -- he never COULD get over his attitude issues and bouts of real-life aggression and bad manner.
*RIP, sweet Prince, 1988 -- 2009 !!: (*
.
More candidates in the same vein would be players like ElakeDuck, Creolophus, this Danish night elf whos name eludes me right now... ThomasG, I think ? HasuObs too. :P
.
Sometimes pitlord just break faces, and i love to see it
Healing Wave works the same as Shadow Wave in DotA from Dazzle
Fatal Bonds (from Warlock from DotA) is more like the Spirit Link from the Spirit Walkers of Warcraft.
'Race?'
'For level 10? Sure.'
You look like sherlock holmes with this hair. I like it :)
I can accept my child dating any race, even Naga, except for Undead. In this house we respect the laws of thermodynamics and we value life.
26:27 -- that damage was *REALLY* pathetic...
I'm starting to think that the Human NEVER really researched any *weapons upgrades* ... :O
Hence *_why_** HE LOST* ... :P (more to do with THAT, than with Grubby's play, really... :P)
.
Is t the age of empires upgrades also 3 of each? Starting with feudal age, castle age, imperial. Most infantry cavalry archers all have three of each attack and defense. Some civilizations are left without the final upgrades for certain unit types for balance and variety.
Was actually curious about a max-healing (sustain) orc build using Troll Priest mercs, HH (troll regen), and such. Seemed to really work for not losing units for a long time, efficiency went up because of that, and less (no) money spent replacing units. Very, very cool!
Grubby been watching for ever and jus wanna sayty for being the most consistent uploader on youtube always a new vid to watch eveytime i open yt. Like i watch channels that just upload vods ... Still wait a week for one. So ty for always staying consistent with your craft ❤️
At 13:30 how did he know to move his Tauren Chieftan directly into the spot he was going to TP? Did he just guess their positioning on the TP?
Oh yesss
Who is the best healer hero in WC3? Pala? Alc? Shaman? Keeper? DK?
Yup, soloing alone with army :3
I am a simple man. I see Pit Lord, I misclick
I like your hair cut professor
You need to know, even if you accept them, because they might be Night Elf.
tremble before awoooooooooogaaaaa 🍈🍈🍈
Great video :D
Have you ever lost a game when going pitlord 1st, 2nd or 3rd ?
Such quirky creeping hehe
How come I never see you go mirror image blademaster after the initial testing? Is it only worth it against keeper or another DoT hero?
nice hair
Here' a challenge: Ask opponent to choose your heroes!
I love pitlord
That Thumbnail man 🤣🤣🤣
I cut my phone call because of this !
Sometimes i think the pitloard and tinker only good heros.. just got so much personality
Nice
let me undad myself real quick!
Why bring back the cleave pit lord thumbnail?
Is that Big Mom?
API = Application Programming Interface
maybe start pitlord against happy
workers repairing should get damaged from liquid fire, as much damage as a meelee unit attacking a structure with spikes takes
Lok'tar Ogar!
First cleavage thumbnail?
16:00 did the tc got clipped?
I think the idea is that Blademaster has no collision while windwalking, but gains a collision effect when exiting windwalk. So when he exits Windwalk he can displace whatever he was standing on. And since the TC was tightly surrounded, the closest spot for the TC to be displaced to was outside of the surround.
It's one of the fancy micro that Orc pro players usually do when one of their unit get surrounded.
Theres only one race, the human race, i think you mean color. What color are they.
Discrimination against night elves. How dare you?
Cleaver girl 😢
Trembled. Other way.
VODs xD
27:55
Censored part: 34:43 😶🌫
First!
The SC2 Upgrades for attack and damage I think are too much. They change unit time to kill too much, sometimes allowing even units to become complete slaughters such as +1 zealots vs zerglings. Additionally, they heavily lock in a tech tree path. Can't make a carrier switch in sc2 against that bio-army, even if it was 90% marauders because the 3/3 means low damage, and the units that die get replaced by a counter that is vastly better than base. Warcraft 3 is better, where it is percent damage increase and reduction, not as impactful and a lot more boring. Kinda would rather it be removed in both games, but the SC2 version I think makes the game worse. I'd rather micro and unit composition be the deciding factor in a win rather than If I time it for this upgrade finishing my army that was even with theirs now slaughters theirs.
ggg
If I was a dad I wouldn't want my child to date an undad either
Taker is not even remotely close to semi pro. It’s crazy how content makers get “pro” treatment
Jesus loves you a lot, friend. If you seek Him with all of your heart you will have a supernatural encounter with God. You're precious and loved
Grubby is a great person. He doesn't specifically need god for that.
@@DerDarkfire1 We all need God because there is life after death and only Jesus (God the Son) can lead us to Heaven, friend.
