Inspiration especially if like me you are a beginner, their are many videos on you tube that cover model railways but personally I find they become to technical and go on forever and if your new to the hobby you want to watch something that is simple and to the point and that’s exactly what budget model railways are about 👍. Paul
It’s the philosophy behind your thinking that I enjoy. You can spend an awful lot of time and money on a project only to become disheartened and frustrated when it’s not turned out as well as you hoped.
Simplicity is the key in my view.

My uncle used to be an avid model railway enthusiast. I remember he used to have a station area with a little shunting area behind it, with a stretch of track leading from the station going towards another shunting area and loco storage shed. We had great fun with it. When he died, I inherited all his gear but I've not had the room or time to do anything with it. When I move into my new house I fully intend on getting something set up. Thanks for inspiring me with your insightful videos :)
I just discovered your channel, and I've watched a few videos. Plenty of great ideas! My dad and I built a layout on a 4' x 8' plywood back in the 1990s. When I moved into my own house I was going to set it up, but quickly realized I had no room, and little time. Now I have a different house with a full basement and my wife was excited that I'd be able to have the layout back out again after 20 years of being stored. I like how you find very in expensive ways to build a layout. My dad and I did a basic oval with a siding. It's very simple and we never attached the buildings or got to any roads, just track, so I have plenty to work with. I'm still on a tight budget, but now I know I don't have to spend a lot to have a great layout. Thanks again for sharing your hobby with us and giving us some great suggestions and ideas too!

Hi, just watched your video, excellent commentory... you are absolutely right about how we model and run our layouts. Simple answer to anyone who makes a somewhat negative remark is Rule 1 applies. It's your layout so you run it how you like. Well done. It's similar in ideas to my N gauge layout.
Not a fan of shunting layouts personally, like watching my trains go round & round haha but I really like the look of this one! Excited to see what it will look like! If I ever needed to make a terminus station I'd likely plan something like that.

As always - a cracking job boys. Inspirational. I can see I may need to go a little more complex than I was thinking when I come to building my layout.
Two suggestions if I may:
One, try reducing the length of the front siding/headshunt, and try putting the coal merchants on the middle line - sometimes less track can look better without sacrificing the operating potential, especially as you can then as some more scenery to the front of the layout.
Two, why don’t you fit an isolating section to the end of the main platform road, so one engine can bring the passengers train in, and a second engine takes the train out?

I like to keep wiring simple, but nice ideas. There is not enough room for the coal yard in the middle

This is my kind of layout. I'm in the process of designing a folding layout roughly the same size as this but I'm trying to build it with the fiddle yard also being included within the same board to save attaching. Once I get the board finished I will send a photo to you guys. Although it would be nice if you too could do a small folding layout, folds over to be nothing more than a box
If you're still wondering what the coach is, it's a Hornby Railroad Ex-LMS brake coach, probably originated from the Royal Scot train set Hornby did a few years back.
You certainly have good shunting layouts and good track plans for other people to use for there shunting yards on there layouts
Hello Mike and Doug Paul here No 1 fan 😉 just one question I keep hearing that a lot of people in the hobby suggest laying 3mm thick cork on your base board with pva and then laying the track on top of the cork as this reduces any noise from your locomotives ? but I would imagine those who fit cork will also be laying ballast which I won’t be doing 😏. So If I was to use the cork and paint the edges with black acrylic and then roofing felt glued on top of the cork, then my 00 gauge track, but using screws , not pins ! what do you think 🤔. I do like your industrial quarry layouts very much it was when I watched this video I thought yes that’s for me 👍
Personally I've never understood the whole cork thing, especially when you cover it in rock hard ballast that defeats the point of using it in the first place?! It does give a nice shoulder if you must ballast but cardboard would do that
the coach is a mk1 composite corridor brake coach. I still have a set of these in a "the duchess" train set from years ago.
Its quite a bit shorter than a Mk1?
@@BudgetModelRailways I think your right, noticed dapol selling it as a "stanier" coach which after a quick google is telling me were shorter than mk1, i had always just assumed them as mk1.

This has probably already been said, but.
I find that 4.5/5ft X 1.5/2ft is plenty for a very good shunting set up.
On my full 8x4 double loop layout the part that's used the most is the station at the front and the SIDINGS!
All of which is no more than 4.5ft in length, if you add the Sidings it takes the width from 1ft to 3ft but it is a full system of Sidings.
Could easily reduce it and make that whole section fit within a 5x18" board no problem.
Once my main layout is finished I'll be starting a little end to end shunting layout.

The 3 road sidings the whole thing is 4.5ft X 1.5ft!

I have some very long diesels which are not shunters but freight carriers.
But I don't care.
I have in my garage set up the base boards which are 600mm wide with a total of a 5 metre run.
So do you think your idea could be lengthened to 5m long and with dcc?

5 Metres would allow you to have a decent non scenic fiddle yard which is a big asset on shunting layouts. Many big diesels were used to shunt for various reasons so no problem there
This section of railway track was constructed in 1906 as part of a mass expansion project devised by then owner of the line: Arthur Erik. During the project a small 0-4-0 industrial tank engine was purchased from a local industrial estate raising the total number of engines on the railway to four. The line would be completed by 1911.
In 1938 with the growing image of another war becoming greater an armored vehicle production line was established nearby. This section of the line was almost closed by BR in 1957 but the idea received so much criticism that it was dropped shortly after.
Lovely stuff as ever mate 😀 Amazing operating potential in such a small space with the right kind of vehicles 😎 That ex LMS 0-6-0 was a great bargain too! Great little freight engine, though I believe they were often drafted in to haul ‘specials’ during summer months if a suitable passenger engine couldn’t be found👍😜

one thing I´d like to see at some point one day from you is a montage of every layout you have built from Greenhill hault and Ho - something or other to this and the N, might also be a nice layout to make a new intro piece with that new loco and some coaches pulling into the station. (market town is getting a little old now)

Very nice switching (as we say on the American side of the pond) layout. Lots of possibilities for spotting passenger and freight cars. Looks bigger than four feet. I’ll follow your progress with interest!

I take your idea of the Dapol Station. Very convincing for a small branch line, or a light railway. I pick it !
I like this track plan. I’m tempted to see what it would look like with an extra foot or so of length.
Nice! I'm experimenting with n gauge shunting layouts on laminate flooring off-cuts. These are stored in a box file (to appease family). Got two variants in there so far: Inglenook-style; a Z-shaped one (with run-loop in the diagonal) on which I'm trying out inset track. Will have minimal scenery. Great fun to run from one to the other.

I like this alot. I am building a small modular layout myself . wood i have is 4ft by 2 ft and running HO Gauge track bit of a challenge having freight cars. Most seem a bit big to do anything but this does gives me ideas.. Someone suggested I could have a curve track set to have a run around loop to do some switching. Its work in progress but wow this is very nicely built.
Even a small siding adds possibilities, have fun with it
@@BudgetModelRailways exactly thats actually when i ran my 0-4-0 dockside steamer it was actually fun to watch it take a box car to where it need to be . i recently changed it so i can put a buldings and things on it that way its more user friendly.
Prototypically, the pagoda-type buildings were often seen in GWR stations and had many different purposes including a waiting room.

It’s interesting how creative one can be when trying to use “the available space”.
I’ve starting working on a 4’x1’ n scale shunting layout (with a detachable 20” fiddle yard). My big issue is whether or not to take the time to scratch-build structures. Maybe I could make some buildings out of foam board or heavy card as temporary stand-ins.
I am using Kato Unitrack which is hard to find at discount. I’ve taken track segments including points from a larger layout to reduce cost. Kato #6 turnouts can cost between $21 & $25 (USD) new - not easy to build a budget model railroad at that price point.
While I accept standards as important and sometimes necessary, the model railway hobby can be less appealing to us who enjoy the challenge of doing things on the cheap. For me and others this clashes with the different goals that clubs tend to have. I’m glad that there is a place for all of us.
My final thought: Inspired by the Forged In Fire show, it would be kool if BMR would sponsor a 2021 global contest with a challenging set of parameters like:
-two categories: Shunting and Round about
-size(s) no larger than ___________
-up to _____ number of points
-cost no more X dollars, pounds, pesos
-90 minute video presentation

All good points. I also use Kato but cant find it cheap, so I didNT use points. Scratch building buildings is cheap, fun and ensures they fit your available space
Always interesting to see your channel guys. When I met you I couldn't say what I was doing with Hornby in detail but now as you may know it was the Bassett Lowke Steampunk range (I designed them). So do let me know if you do anything with those. With yours son 3D printing skills the locos could be transformed. Laurie.

Great ideas, nice take on a small but big layout with lots of potential. Like your LMS 0-6-0 too - used here in East Anglia to haul passenger trains on the old M&GN. Given me an idea too as I'm getting a bit frustrated with trying to build a layout thats too big.

@@BudgetModelRailways I've found 2 bits of old baseboard, 1 4 ft x 20" the other 3ft11(!) x 20" so there's a start, NB my better half has demanded pink mushroom houses, - they will go with her felted loco which was in Railway Modeller in September 2020, me I'm going for a treacle quarry and a mint mine somehow.

Hi I'm pleased I found your site, I'm planning a small layout, and you're shunting video has come in very handy, I was thinking of using a 3 way point for entry in to the station
3 way points and y points are very useful if you have them
my N-gauge "Master" layout is 32x96 inches ( no deeper than ℹ can reach my arm to the back of ) ...
... Leaving me with a 16x96 in. "Shelf" - which was perfect for a 4 track "HO Switcher" as ℹ call it

I've been getting into shunting moves a lot more lately, having played quite a lot of SimSig over lockdown, next time I get back into railway modelling, I will definitely consider what interesting shunts I can provide for when I design the layout.
I think you asked people what they would like to see: I'd love to know/see a list of the typical shunting moves you plan to run on this layout..!

Budget Model Railways it does seem since lockdown everyone is putting their prices through the roof. Supply and demand I guess but i look back at a lovely class 37 I bought at Christmas for a friend and only paid £35 including postage nowdays? Phew. Anymore live streams planned soon?

Need some help and advise. I’m planning a double parallel loop (inner and outer) running off 2x controllers. However I want the option for trains to pass/ switch to the other track. It seems that it shorts the other controller. Do I need to isolate it. Hornby have a r618. Is this the right thing to use.
Ive never tried that because of the wiring issues. I prefer to keep loops separate
I think you need to build a length of track that can be switched to feed from either controller. Run your train from the inner loop onto the middle track and stop, switch the track to feed from the other controller, and run onto the outer loop (or vice versa as the case might be).
Sven Norén I think that makes sense. I could put a water tank/ coal hop as a reason to stop. I presume I would still need to isolate and then also bring power down from the other track
You might be able to use insulfrog points to do it? Its a good solution although personally I would keep it simple and keep them separate?
Budget Model Railways I agree this would be simpler but due to how I’m setting up the layout I done have room for much more. I’m building the layout as a suspended shelf around my toddler sons room. 2x loops with the outer being raised skittle higher to see it. I’ve got a vintage school desk which I’m going to build a control panel for it (which I can lock) I was going to use your hill techniques and other modelling tutorials to do the scenery. It will look good when done but wanted the variation for the trains to do separate loops and for a train to do mixed. I will be running a few sidings and passing loops to hold additional rolling stock and locos.

nice shunting yard. I do like the depot, but I thing for me to get one it be 3X the amount you pay. they like to profit on postage as well I think.

I've seen your layout in a box video and I wondered how you store all of your open layouts and more importantly, how you keep dust from accumulating on your layout and track? Especially those big layouts
To be honest there is not much you can do practically, esp with the large layouts. Smaller ones tend to live upside down supported by the bacjscene. I have never had much problem with dust etc, you can always Hoover them. For me fading is a bigger issue

Hi, sorry this layout got sold along time ago so no way of checking. It used a lot of old no longer available track. Basically it will depend on what size board you have, AnyRail free software will let you design to fit a given size and will tell you what track was used

There were two, one on the inlet road and one on the headshunt for the kick back siding

hello i have a problem with my running of model trains theres a weird thing that goes on when i stop the loco it has a sudden bursts of energy and moves forward quite suddenly about 3-4cm this happens with all locomotives and i'm wondering if it's perhaps something to do with the controller (i use a bachmann dc controller)
Ive not heard of it before. I guess the way to find out is try another controller?
It could also be the track, on my shunting layout trains kept stopping at a certain piece of track and I solved it by swapping it and another piece around.

Sorry no. It was sold several years ago and I never draw track plans. Hopefully you can work it out from the various videos.
