Thank you for all the comments! I wanted to address that this carving was not intended to be "Mary" but just me practicing to carve a female face. I recently posted my actual carving of Mary if you'd like to check it out. Thanks!

That’s true! It’s more so that in media that’s not of real humans we assume features in art and other media. Like how Disney princesses are actually super slim but we often don’t remember just how tiny their waist was in the movies. So women having super gentle features in art all the time makes sense so our brains register such things or even how children are done it art always having bigger and rounded eyes and more rounded faces

Management always wants female characters to be smoother and nearly featureless so any attempt to create a female face with distinctive features will usually be met with resistance. Not to mention that there's usually only one body type for female characters whereas male characters are allowed to come in any shape.

We're going to pretend women's faces are all curves and men's faces are cubes?
There's no dna gene for the face of a male or female
It's just genes for features on a face
A male can have a rounder face, a female can have chiseled jaws
Men were classically portrayed with raise cheekbones
BUT it's LITERALLY a thing to look for in a woman model
Look at modelling agency and catwalks and you see their cheekbones
Why there SEEMS to be women and men faces are only bcos of hair length and makeup
There are plenty of men with plump lips and women with thin ones
It's UNLIKE with shoulder width or hip ratio

The majority of his carvings are of animals, people, and religious figures. My favorite of his is one of the scenes of Jesus's execution. It was a collaborative piece with my aunt, and she painted the rest of the temple along with the lashes and scars on Jesus's back. My dad won a couple 1st place ribbons at the iowa state fair with his cottonwood bark carvings. Miss him everyday but happy to see other people work with such an interesting and close to heart medium

I'd never considered how our perceptions of masculinity and femininity would affect the difficulty of depicting men/women in certain mediums, but it's very interesting!

Man the Virgin Mary looks so good! Good job my brother!

    • @Matthew-307
      @Matthew-307 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Mary is not a virgin anymore, the Bible says that after she gave birth to Yeshua that she had sex with her husband and had other children. Just one of many errors of the Catholics. They worship a human(Mary and the apostles), they are idolaters and transgressing the commandments of the Most High God.

Not intended to be Mary, just practicing carving the female face. However as I was carving it I was tempted to change gears to carve a native American lol

Excellent job for your first walk around the bend so to speak, only advice I could give us maybe to add her hood on the next revision to help give that saintly air about it as well as to soften her features more maybe fuller cheeks but overall a more delicate character, definitely not the easiest task but anyone passionate in their craft finds their own way 👍
